It was real easy for Thoreau to live mindfully and simplify when he had his mom and his sister coming to his house every day to clean his rooms, wash his laundry, and cook his dinners.
I think they are intoning Calvin is complicated. It is tough keeping up with a self proclaimed genius who has mastered the art of time travel and transmorgification!
The Count has always wondered of Thoreau advocated Simplifying, why did he say it three times? Wouldn’t it have been simpler to simply say “Simplify”? Kind of like the job applicant who answered the question “What are your three best qualities?” by saying “Brevity”. Now take the pebble from The Count’s hand, Grasshopper. Psych! Ha!
There was a kid who lived next door to us when we moved to town. He was a good kid, never misbehaved in school or anything I was aware of and he was a couple of years younger than me. I used to hear his dad scream at him telling him, “If it wasn’t for you, your mother and I would be happy.” I couldn’t imagine how he must have felt. He hung out at our house a lot, probably because my parents loved on him as much as they did my brother and myself.
They moved away a year or so later. I still remember him looking out the back window of their car with tears streaming down his face. Never heard anything more about him.
Sigh, now I’m depressed. That was 60 or so years ago.
This kind of talk between the parents should never be heard by the children.
As far as the parents being all worn out from work and household and taking care of Calvin, they should send him to day camp, or leave him for a week or two with the grandparents, and take a vacation, but I suspect that on day two they will miss their little boy.
Marge: “Have you noticed any change in Bart?”Homer: “New glasses?”Marge: “No, he looks like something might be disturbing him.”Homer: “Probably misses his old glasses.”Marge: “I guess we could get more involved in Bart’s activities, but then I’d be afraid of smothering him.”Homer: “Yeah, and then we’d get the chair.”Marge: “That’s not what I meant.”Homer: “It was, Marge. Admit it.”

Draw up a nice hot bath for Calvin. Be careful though… It is not uncommon for little brats, er, kids to drown in the tub.

Life becomes a lot more simple if you can realize that you do not have to rule the world; you just have to keep it from ruling you.
