So they’re that kind of family. Parents who don’t discipline children or teach them to behave properly when in public.

Since they didn’t have a reservation, and the hostess didn’t ask for a name, I wonder how she knew who they were. An online image search?

At a restaurant I worked at we had this one family come in and they let their kids run wild. running around the tables. going in and out of the kitchen. When they were done the manager brought them their bill and told them that until they get control of their kids they were barred. The mother was almost in tears and said we couldn’t do that. this was the last restaurant in the area that would take them.

One time, when our girls were really young, we went to have lunch at our favorite buffet place. The place was fairly empty when we got there. Soon after we were seated a couple came in. The hostess (manager, and friend of ours) went to seat them near us, but they asked to be moved because they preferred not to be seated near “those children”. The manager tried to tell them that “those children” were well-behaved, but they insisted, so she moved them across the room from us. Soon after, the place started to fill up. A family came in with three very rambunctious boys, and the only table available was the one right next to that couple! We could see them looking over at us, with our girls sitting nicely and behaving, while those boys were…well…not.

I’ve arrived at a couple of restaurants where kids had recently left. The carnage was like a hurricane had hit. No wonder many restaurants are going NO KIDS!! I also saw one kid in a bank go into an empty office and clear a desk. The bankers couldn’t do anything out of fear of being sued and no parent said a word. They were done with their business and just grabbed the kid and left without a word!!

We went to a restaurant once when our first son was a bit under 2 years old. He kicked up such a fuss, we had to take it in turns to take him outside while the other was able to eat something, then we’d swap over. There was no way he could be left in the restaurant kicking off that much. We never went back to restaurants for another 5 years. Took that long to get over the trauma.

Which is why I support some restaurants having a no kids rule. Sometimes it’s nice to eat a meal out in a nice quiet atmosphere. For those of you with kids who would say that you shouldn’t be discriminated against because of having kids, I would say get a baby sitter or keep your legs shut or you fly closed if your not happy with your choices.

When the kids were little we would a couple of times a year get a baby sitter and have a nice meal out alone. Otherwise we resigned ourselves to eating at places where we already knew would be kid magnets. I think we can still recite the McDonalds menu from the 80’s from memory frontwards, backwards and sideways.

Our kids were always well behaved and people would comment so, while in public places. But then we always worked with them to be behaved and as to why it was important in public settings. I don’t see that much now days with kids and parents, and it is so frustrating when you are paying for and trying to have a nice meal, when someone else’s kids are being a major undisciplined distraction.

many years ago we went out with some friends who had a little boy who was almost a holy terror. Food was flyin’, and when we got up to leave, there was food all over the floor for a good 6-8 foot radius. As we got up to leave, the busboy happened to walk by, and he stopped and stared in disbelief. I almost said “let’s get outta here before he calls the cops!” (the dad shoulda given him a big tip!)

In the food service for many years, there are some places you shouldn’t take kids. No matter how well mannered your kids are, they get bored, anxious and fidgety. And then a manager has to get involved, I have asked families to leave because of situations like these.

On the rare occasion when we were able to afford to go out to eat when me and my sister were younger we were taught that we had to behave and stay in our seat and if we caused a problem we would be taken out to the car by one of the parents and not get to eat in the restaurant. We were also taught to behave in the store or the same thing would happen.
