Well let me be the first to admit that my prediction of a jump to a week of Shannon with Toni instead of Brad has just gone up in smoke. It looks like we may learn some more about Shannon’s anxiety/ies after all.
In other news, the splotches on Shannon’s shirt are back and the stripes on Brad’s sleeves have changed from red to yellow.
I agree with RSH. I think Shannon hadn’t realized (or had it explained to her) that she would be staying for a month. And it took her completely by surprise. Actually, they probably did tell her, she just wasn’t listening.
Mom had a bad stroke a month before my first one was born an only lasted a few years after that. Even though she culdn’t help much it was good to have her there and her advise was good and she loved the kids. She called em ‘her medicine’ cause she perked up when they were around
Looks like this week we are going to see Brad get a lesson in “Parenting 101” from Nancy. Way to go Nancy. Brad is quickly going to realize that actually having a baby and starting a family with Toni D is going to be rewarding but not without numerous challenges. Will this discourage Brad (and Toni for that matter) from wanting to have a baby? I am going to guess that Nancy is going to find out what really is bugging Shannon Brad and it is not taking a bath.
I am pretty sure the bath trauma was triggered by the realization that she won’t see her dad for a month. Delayed reaction trigger. Quite common in displaced children and Shannon certainly comes from a very unstable environment.

Americans are known far and wide for being touchy-feely people (not in a bad way, you seem to need to touch people). Why have we never seen that little girl receiving a hug? This is the first one she is getting.
It’s weird that Brad didn’t realize the reason for the crying was telling Shannon that her father would be away for a month, but Nancy will probably understand and help the little girl to be strong. Brad will really learn a lot from his mother in this occasion.
Shannon has spent the night there before and has probably had many baths. Why would she be upset on her first day with T and B? Surely she will video chat with her dad most days so it is not like she won’t see him for a month.
Isn’t the heartbreak of child abandonment a little heavy for a comic strip? And how long before Shannon gets over the realization that her dad is gone for a month and reverts back to her old self?
It would be interesting to ask Greg Evans why he has made child abandonment and dysfunctional families such a primary thread in his storylines. Les was abandoned by Ann, Tiffany has been pretty much abandoned by Tom, Bernice has been alienated from her mother (nothing is ever said about her dad), Shannon is abandoned regularly by Jonah, TJ has no evident family ties, Tara has murderous relatives, Piro has a dysfunctional home life and Bets is alienated from her family. That’s eight of the strip’s main characters who have family issues.
Leave it to Nancy to fix the problem. Maybe Brad should admit that he’s not parent material and just have her take it from here, especially since he’s a grown man being soothed by a lullaby. Still, I’m grateful for anything that calms Shannon down.
I had two boys over for the weekend. They needed a bath so since one was 5 and the other 6, brothers, i let them take it together. They had a ball; I had a mess, but it was a good time.
I’m still hoping that the brat’s dad, does a “runner”, now that he’s pawned off his #1 problem on someone else. That would be “way far better” than the broken window, at Tiffany’s “mansion without at least one servant”.

Sweet comic and very true. Mothers know calming songs/melodies that give comfort and help children fall sleep.
WTG Nancy!

Shannon has stayed with them before, many times. Are we to expect that this is the first time she’s had a meltdown like this?

Shannon’s only real female role model we know about is Toni, and she has never really been the motherly sort. So this is something new for Shannon.

She’s crying because her father left her for a whole month, Brad. It’s parental abandonment issues at their finest.

Sorry but Luann, the comic, has lost it. Nice artwork, but empty storylines and annoying characters. I will politely continue to monitor for a pulse.
