Wonderful Nancy, she immediately turned it into an opportunity for Shannon to feel involved in a game where she can explain things and have fun. Maybe not even Luann could have done it so well. Brad has a lot to learn from his mother, but Nancy is ready to become a grandma loved by her grandchildren.
So…. with the extreme success Nancy has displayed in converting this situation…. and in even getting Shannon to be acting like a happy, typical kid…. It has me pondering these questions:
1. How would Brad, or hell for that matter, Luann have been as kids if their situation had been more akin to Shannon’s?
2. Is and/or will Frank next come in and display a successful “Dad” ethos with Shannon during a different meltdown? Dads are definitely different in parenting but often the good ones are equally as effective.
3. Will this “magic” power shown by Nancy spur any discussions by Brad and Toni about acting in a more “parental” way with Shannon during the remainder of this month?
Thus far, in this visit, the role of Brad (since Toni has not been shown much yet) has been more simply that of a “caretaker” and less of a wiser “parental” role.
The decision as to whether or not to have a baby better be left up to Toni. If she’s not feeling those motherhood instincts, Brad isn’t going to be much use.
On one hand it’s good that Nancy was able to get results, but on the other hand you shouldn’t need to trick a kid into obeying. At some point they’re going to run into something Shannon just plain doesn’t want to do, and by then Shannon will have learned (assuming she hasn’t figured it out by now) that there’s nothing the adults in her life won’t back down on.
She’ll probably end up like some of the young soldiers I saw in the army, who’d been brought up to believe that if they resisted long enough then their elders/superiors would let things slide. That’s how I’ve literally watching encounters escalate from them being told to button their cargo pocket, to them being forcibly confined awaiting legal charges. Point is, eventually Shannon will find someone who simply will not back down, and she’ll keep pushing and pushing until things escalate beyond her control.
But hey, like I said: at least she’s bathing. I suppose we should enjoy the victory such as it is. Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
Parenting lessons for Brad: (1) what to do with a crying child. Time and time you see a good parent (dad or mom) just picks the child up and holds them for a while; it’s the power of touch. You can’t talk or reason with a hysterical crying child. Only after they calm down can you ask what’s wrong.
Can we please move on from Shannon? I get that others find her intersting but I am sick of her. This arc is way too long and Nancy won’t change my mind.
Well done, Grandmom Nancy. She found out what was really bothering Shannon and psyched her into wanting a bath. Now please help her so there is no flood!
