I have to disagree with Earl. People ought to have more face-to-face conversations. They don’t need to be personal in nature – just person-to-person talks about anything. Just stay away from politics with people whose opinions are not the same as yours.
Sadly, we are not how to be critical thinkers from our teachers, nor to agree maturely to disagree. Too much is, “I’m offended” and get verbally or physically abusive. Satan thrives on divisiveness.
Third here! I was an avid library visitor (brick and mortar). Now all I have to do is pick up my tablet or computer to look something up. It’s wonderful!
Earl left out the party lines that happened on the telephone (land-lined) where you had to wait for the conversation on the other end to stop and you had the line (finally) before you could dial your call. Horrible times for the telephone company before things improved.
I had that sort of rapport with my oldest grandson when he was growing up. Now we only can communicate electronically or by Skype, since he lives in the States and I’m in South America but we still have a strong bond.
Opal and Earl love each other and couldn’t live without each other. Do they make fun of each other and seem irritated at times? Yes. Have you ever seen a married couple that didn’t do just that?
I love to see a couple in a restaurant and both are on the phone. I usually stop by and say, “She is right there, try talking to her.” The reaction is hilarious.

I’m having problems imagining him having long, personal conversations with Opal.

Face to face contact was more personable, if you criticize someone face to face you immediately get results, hard to do that electronically!

Was Earl attacked by Zorro in the 3rd panel?

Face to face small talk could be exhausting unless you turned your mind onto Auto.

The other thing that happened is that people would force their opinion via stubbornness. They despise that they can get fact checked in real time now.

For one thing, kids played outside, used their imagination, used the dictionary, and didn’t shop at malls with their parents credit cards.
