Saw recently that Kris Kistofferson had passed away. From Wikipedia: Kristoffer Kristofferson (June 22, 1936 – September 28, 2024) was an American country singer, songwriter, and actor.
Kristofferson was a pioneering figure in the outlaw country movement of the 1970s, moving away from the polished Nashville sound and toward a more raw, introspective style. He released his debut album Kristofferson in 1970. Among his songwriting credits are “Me and Bobby McGee”, “For the Good Times”, “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down”, and “Help Me Make It Through the Night”, all of which became hits for other artists. Kristofferson was also a member of the country music supergroup the Highwaymen between 1985 and 1995. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2004 and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014.
During the 1970s, Kristofferson also embarked on a successful career as a Hollywood actor. He became known for his roles in Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973), Blume in Love (1973), Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore (1974), and A Star Is Born (1976); for the latter, he earned a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. His acting career waned somewhat following his role in the box office bomb Heaven’s Gate (1980), but he continued to act in films such as Stagecoach (1986), Lone Star (1996), and the Blade film trilogy (1998–2004).
A very virtuous and accomplished man. He has said he wanted to live long enough to vote against the traitorous orange pile of corruption (not his words). I hope Putin’s puppet doesn’t pull a win in the war against the Constitution and traditional values
Jimmy Carter, not so good of a President but you can’t take away the fact what he accomplished at the Camp David Accord, he deregulated the airline industry, and had fewer government employees than the Ford administration. He also had the stones to boycott the Moscow Olympics. Sadly his indecisive action with the Iran hostage crisis and the Mariel Boat lift (I lived through it) sealed his fate in Florida. Then govenor Lawton Childs keep quiet believing his good friend Jimmy Carter would bail him out.
The shining counter to Hair Gropingfuror. Actually smart, principled, a true Christian in beliefs and practices, dedicated to his wife (although his comment about looking at other women might have won him the presidency).
Unfortunately, that’s where that “accomplishment” belongs. Jimmy Carter is a great man and wonderful humanitarian but he was a horrible president. The economists had to come up with a new word – stagflation – to describe the unbelievable conditions Jimmy inflicted on the country. You think mortgage rates are high now? They were more than twice the current rate under Carter. He could do nothing to bring home the hostages. His presidency was basically a complete failure. But I suspect he knows that. Happy Birthday Jimmy. I admire the man for beating brain cancer and I hope he gets his wish to vote in this election on election day. Although, the smarter thing to do would be to vote early – just in case.
I thought President Carter was only a So – So President. He came into his true calling after the Presidency and became a man for the ages. Happy Birthday Mr. President.
Jimmy Carter is also still alive, and one of the most under-rated POTUS ever. The Republicans defeated every thing he tried. Regan, a Republican took credit for the release of the Iran hostages, which was a total lie. Carter worked with Canadian Ambassador to Iran Ken Taylor to sneak them out of Iran under fake Canadian passports. Ben Affleck’s movie “Argo” was an absolute lie, not one word of fact in it. The USA had NO part in the release of the hostages, but they falsely claim to.
The man who gave the Panama Canal back to Panama, even though we built it. Panama promptly sold it to China, who could block us from using it if they want to. I did respect his integrity (if not his intelligence) until Obama was running, and Carter said, “If you don’t vote for Obama it’s because you’re prejudiced.” I can definitely disagree with a man’s politics without race being a factor. Yes, Carter has done a lot of good things, but he lost a lot of respect that day.
Also "Mr. Kristofferson graduated with honors with a degree in literature from Pomona College in Claremont, Calif., in 1958. He also had prizewinning entries in a collegiate short-story contest sponsored by The Atlantic Monthly magazine before being awarded a Rhodes scholarship to study English literature at Oxford. Mr. Kristofferson graduated from Merton College, Oxford, in 1960 and received a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. In 1961, he married Frances Beer and was stationed in Germany, where he served as a helicopter pilot.
He attained the rank of captain in 1965 and received an appointment to teach English at West Point. He ultimately declined the position, trading the comforts it might have afforded for the penury of life as a would-be songwriter in Nashville."
Jimmy Carter was one of the few Presidents who actually created a jobs program for those who had been out of work for five years or more. The CETA program. Thanks Jimmy!
J> Carter was the first president I voted for. I had just turned 18 that year. Haven’t missed an election since and only twice were my candidates not elected.
I read where he wants to make sure that he’s around to cast his vote on Nov 5th, for Kamala Harris. He’s led a noble life and his time as president is merely a footnote compared to his greater impact on the world.
Ummm, the comic is a tribute to Jimmy Carter, the most underappreciated president in history, and an incredibly decent man. Can we just take a minute to acknowledge that before bouncing to a pop culture debate?
Carter did his best work after leaving office. He was a giant in the field of helping the less fortunate. His work with HFH is legendary. Happy birthday President Carter.
Thanks to Joe Biden, he will no longer be considered America’s worst President. Every missile that fell on Israel today started on its path when Carter failed to support The Shah of Iran and allowed the theocratic takeover of Iran, dooming women to a life of religious oppression, gays to defenestration, and Parsees to being strung up like fish on a line in mass executions. When Americans were taken prisoner and held forever, a clear casus belli, instead of taking out the mullahs he resorted to a poorly planned rescue mission where the helicopters landed in an area of such loose and finely ground sand that it fouled the engines of the helicopters winding up with two colliding together and killing the crews and soldiers. This he then termed an “Incomplete Success”. And people gave George W. Bush trouble for a “Mission Accomplished” banner he didn’t order or even expect. It was put up by the crew of the aircraft carrier who were returning to port in America because their part of the mission had been accomplished.Carter spent much of his post presidency working for Habitat for Humanities. My employer gave us two days a year to spend on public service, so we got to work on an HfH project. The person in charge of the project worked for HfH full time. He’d been on a couple of projects in which Carter made an appearance. They’d roll up in the armored vans the Secret Service prefers followed by a caravan of local newsies. Carter would step out, take off his jacket and tie, roll up his sleeves. Someone would put an apron on him, hand him a paint brush or a hammer, depending on the stage of the build, the newsies would get their photos of 30 seconds of video with a sound bite, then it was off with the apron, down with the sleeves, tie and jacket back on, back to the vans and they were gone. It was good publicity for HfH and no one really expected an old guy to put in a day’s labor.
