Well, back in the 80’s, ketchup was (or proposed to be) classified as a vegetable in school lunches…don’t know if it was when this strip came out.

I had a friend in high school who ate ketchup and American cheese sandwiches every day for lunch. I thought that was the weirdest combination for a sandwich until I dated a lady whose son ate Peanut butter and mustard sandwiches. (…yuck…)

Beanie-weenie was one of the few edible options when I was in high school.

In food service, “presentation” is paramount!

Like a hot dog, mustard only!

So many things learned from one strip: It’s called ‘beany-wienies’??? And a new sandwich recipe to try.

When I was a kid, grade school had to bring lunch, special times got to order for lunch, middle school did get to buy food, that was a treat.

At least she’s not eating a sandwich with Braunschweiger in it…

(I know I’m gonna get a lot of flack from that above statement; not to mention a sacrilege to my German heritage. What can I say? I had a lot of it as a kid and I grew to detest the stuff.)

Cigar butts in a gallstone sauce is fairly tame by Calvin’s standards. And ketchup and Swiss cheese as the only components of a sandwich sounds weird.

Not much difference. And ketchup with Swiss would be gross. In fact, JUST cheese with any condiment sounds gross. For the love of God, put som ham or smoked turkey in there!

Beany-weenies always sounded gross to me. Cheese doesn’t really make a sandwich with enough protein for a growing child.

School cafeterias have never been very good about describing their food.

Kids aren’t allowed to smoke. So the best the tobacco industry could do is to get cigar butts in the cafeteria.

I really must stop reading this strip before lunch!

honestly I just hate ketchup, frankly I also hate beans too so neither lunch appeals to me.
