RIP Kris, a life well done. I can’t think of him without thinking of “Why Me”. I saw an interview of him on how the song came about.

Yesterday a few comments questioned how Mr. Johnson could have the “lead time” to honor Kris Kristofferson just nine days after his death but Arlo’s musings today leave little doubt that was just what JJ was doing. A couple years ago Willie Nelson summed up the kind of force Kris was. “Everything he writes is a standard and we’re all just going to have to live with that.”

That’s my favorite one Arlo. I’ve played Me and Bobby Mcgee in bar bands. Very fun song to play.

Gonna miss Kris Kristofferson. Johnny Cash did him proud.

I do that song quite a bit although it’s usually just Send In The Clowns.

    Anyhoo:

Well, I woke up Sunday mornin’

With no way to hold my head that didn’t hurt

And the beer I had for breakfast wasn’t bad

So I had one more for dessert

Then I fumbled in my closet through my clothes

And found my cleanest dirty shirt

Then I washed my face and combed my hair

And stumbled down the stairs to meet the day

I’d smoked my mind the night before

With cigarettes and songs I’d been pickin’

But I lit my first and watched a small kid

Playin’ with a can that he was kickin’

Then I walked across the street

And caught the Sunday smell of someone’s fryin’ chicken

And Lord, it took me back to somethin’ that I’d lost

    Somewhere, somehow along the way

    On a Sunday mornin’ sidewalk

I’m wishin’, Lord, that I was stoned

‘Cause there’s somethin’ in a Sunday

That makes a body feel alone

And there’s nothin’ short a’ dyin’

That’s half as lonesome as the sound

    Of the sleepin’ city sidewalk

    And Sunday mornin’ comin’ down

In the park I saw a daddy

With a laughin’ little girl that he was swingin’

And I stopped beside a Sunday school

And listened to the songs they were singin’

Then I headed down the street

And somewhere far away a lonely bell was ringin’

And it echoed through the canyons

Like the disappearin’ dreams of yesterday

    On a Sunday mornin’ sidewalk

I’m wishin’, Lord, that I was stoned

‘Cause there’s somethin’ in a Sunday

That makes a body feel alone

And there’s nothin’ short a’ dyin’

That’s half as lonesome as the sound

    Of the sleepin’ city sidewalk

    And Sunday mornin’ comin’ down

Let’s not wait until our favorite artists have passed away. Honor them whilst they’re still alive to know how we feel and/or what their music has meant to us. One of my favorites singers is Grace Slick (and Jefferson Airplane).

“I’ve had a lot of songs on my mind the past few days.”

Could be about the many songs Kris blessed us with. Reasonable.

It could also be about the increasing demise of singers and other artists integral to our youths, creators of fond memories, bits of our pasts coming to an end.

Our local township has (or at least had as we have not looked to see the concerts in the past 5 or so years) free summer concerts at one of the town beaches. They will have a variety of different music over the season.

One year they had Johnny Cash with June Carter Cash, their song and I think one of their daughters and maybe someone else. That was a great concert and one of the ones which stands out in my mind.

The other one which stands out was Peter Noone and a couple of the Hermits from when he was Herman’s Hermits. In the 1960s everyone was crazy for the Beatles, I was enamored of Herman (Peter) and his hermits. I finally got to see them at one of these beach concert when I was in my 40s or 50s. My husband is always upset that I don’t want anything and won’t let him buy me anything – but him finding out about and taking me to that concert was more valuable to me than anything he could have bought me.
