Crankshaft by Tom Batiuk and Dan Davis for September 24, 2024

Yeah, sure, Ed believed his rival and just didn’t pitch that night, and no one else on the team, including the manager and coaches, thought to ask him why he wasn’t ready to go? Wasn’t he dressed and at the ballpark, like all minor league players are required to be? And none of the “big league scouts” sent there to check out Ed Crankshaft wondered about his absence? Put “professional sports” under “burning down a garage” on the list of things Batiuk knows nothing about.

Wouldn’t you need to know how to read to be a B-17 pilot?

And even if he did pitch for the big league scouts… And they offered him a contract… He would’ve been able to read it anyway.

So Ed just didn’t even show up for the game since he thought he wasn’t pitching. That makes total sense. Because if he did show up, the manager would have told him to start warming up. Plus, how did they get anyone to start the game? If normal procedure is to not show up when you aren’t pitching, the other starters wouldn’t have shown up either.

And why was this one game the only one that scouts were going to attend? He’s in the minor leagues. He already was scouted! And they monitor how the minor league players are doing year round. They don’t just sign them to a contract, them come to see them one day a year.

Wait, I know. It’S oNlY a CoMiC! An alleged quarter inch from reality comic.

It took me a little bit to figure out that in Ed’s eyes, as he hadn’t learned to read, the roster was just a jumble of letters

Given that Ed told this yarn in February of 2018, with Lillian watching and listening, has the Pulitzer-worthy message of the story changed from “book burning is bad” to something about dementia and memory loss?

And another thing. Just because someone can’t read doesn’t mean they can’t recognize their own name. Unless they’re blind.

I just found out that this is National Banned Books Week! So of course Tom stops talking about banned books.

You know who doesn’t care about books being banned? The illiterate.
