Monday: Gunther comes out of the closet.

Platonic? Rosa’s on fire for her dream. She’s probably thrilled Gunther is going to share it with her. She probably feels very romantic. Meanwhile…it seems to me Gunther’s going to be dragged along on the Rosa train, and how much he wants his mommy simply doesn’t matter with hurricane Rosa blowing him along. He simply hasn’t the willpower to resist her.

Gunther doesn’t think the mountain village needs him.

I’m still not sure why Gunther really decided to go to Peru in the first place. He knew Rosa’s reason for going, so this turn of events can’t be a surprise to him…

Actually,I don’t necessarily see this as “automatically tragic”. After all, a few days ago, many were chiding Gunther about his desire to “protect his mom”. – Gunther has been struggling with his “homesickness”. And he’s also not keen on “roughing it”. I see this as a time where Gunther may learn what’s really inside of him. He’s also being reminded that there are other people needing things. Perhaps he may see his outlook on his mother’s growth as being selfish. Or he may feel justified. But either way, this is where the steel gets tested… in the fire…..

@IamJB- (can’t get the reply function to work)-I was going to say ’we’ll see tomorrow’, but I’m afraid this arc will end tomorrow, and we’ll find ourselves back in the US, in the middle of some other issue…

And before they get canned, they’ll probably get roasted, toasted, and labeled……

And by “Clinic in a mountain village,” the driver means an expensive plastic surgery recovery resort.

Gunther pure and simple is a ’momma’s boy’. He is not remotely close to being ready for a serious relationship, with Rosa or anyone. Mom appears ready for some freedom but must cut the apron strings somehow.

Yeah, him, too. But I can see them also getting “canned”…..

Gunther receives a great hug – however I think he knows that neither one of them knows what they’re getting into.

I wonder what kind of twist this is going to take. Going into the mountains with a strange driver could be interesting…especially if they are kidnapped, or something along those lines, or even stranded with nobody knowing where they have gone. (I know, I know, I watch too much news).

Wouldn’t it be funny if Survivor was filming in a mountain village in Peru and they needed medical supplies, and guess who shows up?

Gunth didn’t sign up for this.

Gunther is a wuss and always will be. Having been taken care of by his mother has not enabled him enough to deal with life on a level that is independent of his mother. The boy is going to have to grow a serious pair in order to deal with what’s ahead.

Rosa is being obsessive about getting to a mountain village, true; but, on the other hand, hugs like that are hard for a wimpy guy to argue with….

That aside, it seems like Rosa is aware the walls have ears and that if her uncle got wind of her plan, he would put a stop to it.

Perhaps her uncle has a better idea of what it is really like in one of those villages.

Or, if they were in Taiwan, they would get ‘caned’

Yeah, looks like were at a pretty significant “disconnect” between Gunther and Rosa. If they’re to remain together (and I hope they do), they better get it together quick and talk/work things out. If they are to leave each other, then do it quickly. I suspect they aren’t done just yet, because if one of them is to leave (especially Gunther), it would upset what’s going on in Pitts to an extent and require changes there. Also, one or both would have to try and get back into their respective Universities. We’re probably waiting at least until the 1st of the new year for that.

Ok, here’s where the story starts that will eventually get Gunther on “Locked Up Abroad”

They can sleep where they can find room, eat what’s given them and even tho they know little about what they’ll be doing, at least they ARE doing something useful!!!I just hope they have their shots!

Ha ha ha ha! I think I’d much prefer to see what happens when Gunther gets home. Greg Evans has barely drawn any Peru scenery, I don’t know whether he wants to at all. So I say bring on the madness of Gunther being insufferable and his mother booting him out of the house!

Sorry to say it, but Gunther is one sick puppy.

What do you mean “we,” Rosa?

In a twist, Gunther & Rosa will be kidnapped by the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement.

Time to bail dude. It’s not your dream and never will be.

Greg Evans has creatively danced around and teased us of the truth in an artful way. This conversation taking place in a closet is not by chance. Finally the moment of truth. Gunther will finally emerge from the closet.

Rosa’s drive and commitment to help those in need is laudable. And it explains what she’s even doing with conflicted Gunther, who looks more like a project than a boyfriend. Gunther just doesn’t look and act like one of those shiny and enthusiastic volunteer doctors, nurses, and students that we see. Who is the real Gunther? I’m worried his developing Oedipal complex will define him.

Does Rosa have the ability to listen to ANYONE? She will not be much help to anyone if she just tries to force her will on others.

What skills will they bring? None that we know of. How will they survive? Only thing I can think of is by the good graces of the people they’re “helping” — adding two mouths to feed and providing, at most, unskilled labor. The clinic isn’t going to feed and house them, because professional clinics don’t just take in strange people and put them to work. The volunteer system is highly organized (and as I mentioned yesterday, mostly a scam).

Gunther is clearly in need of going home, but Rosa ignores that.

Come on, Gunther, you pucking fussy! You need to man up before she dumps your loser self.

This could be the best thing for everybody involved – Gunther needs to stay away from his mom now, and live his own life. He can support Rosa and who knows, find himself too!

Gunther really wanted to go to college and get a PhD in engineering. Rosa talked him out of doing what he wanted. Why do his goals not matter?

Rosa doesn’t read her audience very well. She has been so perturbed about her knowing nothing about her uncle except that he is a doctor who supplies some aid to poor mountain folks. Now she is ready to jump into another situation she knows nothing about. And all along she cannot see that Gunther much prefers the city life in Peru.

That’s good. I was thinking of how empowering the Uncle is for the county – bring good money in and providing jobs for many. Good charity IS good work, but good business is good too.

Gunther’s a mommies boy, that’s pretty clear. He’s got the chance of a lifetime and he’s worried about his grown mother having a boyfriend??? And a life of her own? Wait, this is a com ic.

Come on, Gunth. It is too late to turn back, both for you AND Mommy. You can’t go home again. Besides….who the #$*& wants to! Look at the beautiful thing hanging onto you. If you disappoint her, you will NEVER get this back. (And I might even stop reading this strip.)

Besides, Gunth, that Mr. Gray looks so pallid and uninteresting, you well might really regret worrying about it at all.

Sounds like the only reason Gunther went to Peru was to be with Rosa. Bad idea. Now he’s just coming across as the wuss he is. I’d dump this dude in a heartbeat.

Life with Rosa is a one way street. She just wants someone who will agree with her. Gunther is a late bloomer and still doesn’t know what he wants. Rosa will leave Gunther flat if he says he has other dreams. Run, Gunther – remember you have to take care of yourself cause no one else will (except Mommy to a point),

I can’t see where Greg is taking Gunther with this. It seems everyone in the strip operates without real plans or goals.

I think that the Peruvian Libido Vampire sucked out all of Gunther’s hormones.

They definitely are not in sync. I don’t see them last very long from here out. Gunther went to Peru just to be with Rosa – not to go on a medical expedition which is Rosa’s dream. Now he is seeing the reality of Rosa’s dream and realizes it is not the situation he wants to be in. I see Gunther on plane home soon.

Good one!– Actually,though, a Rattan cane is used. It’s from the “Palm” family. Also supposed to be good for furniture. Ironic, since you can’t sit down afterward….

A trip to the mountains. How romantic…

unfortunately the “Gunther Party” that Luann and Quill staged was not a great idea though it brought us back to Peru and that part of the plot. Up until now Gunther was actually growing, i.e. realizing that his knowledge and skills are useful to others. Now he’s gotta grow even harder to get over the realization that his Mom may be enjoying life w/o him.

I see something here…at least this is what I hope. Rosa and Gunth go as stowaways to the mountain clinic, and Gunth finds that what is really needed at the remote clinic is not so much “caring” and supplies but someone to help them establish communications with the outside world, i.e. set up a computer and try to work up a link with doctors and hospitals in the city…. do it like this Greg!

or they see a lil kid, and Gunther becomes protective of that kid, and eventually they decide to marry, adopt kid and return to the USA

maybe Rosa is the one that needs to grow… hey this is just a comic strip..

I’m ashamed to say that I used to ship these two.

This story line reminds me of Lucy always luring Charlie Brown to kick the football, then pulling it away. If these two don’t get turned on in the closet, then Greg might as well go back to drawing Luann playing volleyball, or jumping rope with Shannon.

most Latin Americans don’t think (or give it less importance than in the USA) differences of black and white………. they give more importance to “class” and partly “wealth”……….. they would see Sidney Pottier as same class as Bill Gates, and they would see Larry the cable guy as same class as Rodney King(even thought Cable guy is wealthy)…..and most of them see the G.ri.ng.os as vain and spoiled, even today they think almost everyone living in the USA are doing REAL WELL

Very interesting take off on a movie.-I’d be more interested in finding out where you get the idea that an idealist runs around saying he or she is ‘entitled’ to something. Most idealists I’ve encountered believe that those they are trying to help are ‘entitled’ to help.-I’ve also yet to see anything that suggests that the life Rosa and her parents have had all these years is due to the uncle’s financial support. Rosa’s father is supposed to be a diplomat, most likely meaning he is politically involved. These days, that would mean he donates heavily to a political party or candidate. And that would seem to indicate that he has his own money and doesn’t need to be supported by Uncle Plastic Surgeon…

1. America is a continent, not one country. If you mean that the culture of the US is seen by people outside of the US as ‘white and know it all’, it would be more easily understood if you just said ‘US’ instead of ‘America’, since the continent includes other countries.2. Some people outside of the US, such as those in Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam, not only invite US residents to come to their countries to teach their workers how to speak English, but they also hope to open companies in the US. (My niece and nephew have been teaching English as a second language to employees of foreign companies in Japan and Thailand for a few years now.) So if ‘many people’ outside the US see US culture as undesirable, they would not be so interested in opening businesses in the US.

Maybe Greg should take a cue from Brooke. Just over six years ago, Amos was a nervous wreck about a huge performance until Edda cured his hiccups with a “very, very good glass of water.”

For a moment I thought that Gunther and Rosa were going to do “mischiefs” in the medical supplies room.
