1. It’s Rosa’s Uncle Leo, demanding an explanation of why Gunther and Rosa suddenly disappeared from the office and what Rosa could be doing in a mountain village.
2. It’s the manager of the hotel where Gunther and Rosa was staying, demanding payment of their bill.
American accent? Rosa already gave him the kiss off, but maybe she felt guilty and wants to give him a better send off. I’d like to see that. Of course, there’s always Elwood making another bad movie on location. He’d make Gunther party for a week. Ah!! The CIA investigating Rosa’s Uncle/Doctor’s clinic operation. Can’t be the Frito Bandito…that’s a different country. Okay, I’ll wait.
This is one tedious story arc just to write Gunther back into the strip (apparently).
Meanwhile, Delta appears to be completely ignoring her friends since she moved to DC for school … and we still haven’t met Bernice’s college roommate Dez.
Come on, Greg and Karen … let’s have something interesting happen around here, please!
Rosa’s uncle wants to pay Gunther for doing job in his clinic.
He’ll also advice Gunther to continue his studies, and upon completing his education he may return to Peru and the clinic whenever he wants….
They’ll shake hands and the uncle will said he’ll miss him, but education is the most important, and he still has to struggle with stubborn Rosa, and blah, blah, blah…
as spoken in gary owens’ (look him up kiddies) classic narration voice: “tune in again tomorrow for [censored]s last appearance on Luann’s comic strip.”
Having been on a bus tour or two, the bus drivers are usually pretty accommodating… they (and the tour directors) working for the group that hired them, and they usually get a nice tip at the end for being helpful.
I don’t think it’s Rosa – she’s already said whatever goodbye she’s going to say, and is happily working away at the clinic. It doesn’t sound like Luis… so I’m guessing it’s the mysterious uncle, though have no idea why he’d suddenly show up…
That Voice Is REALLY One Leslie Knox, who is actually From Peru and living His Family and Attempting to Get His Life Back on Track with His New Job as Baggage Handler at the Airport. Things were going well until he saw Gunther which triggered painful memories of humiliation at the ‘Backpack’ of the G-Man and his Pal, Ox. JOIN Us Now, as Les enacts His Evil Revenge By Losing Gunther’s Luggage, and Recoil in Horror as Knox Finds Out that the Object of His Lust, Rosa, is only 6 hours away.
It’s either Luann or one of the others at the party. Gunther is back home and they are jostling his memory, to bring him out of the fog by asking him a question.
I’m guessing Rosa’s uncle. Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t they kind of sneak away to that village? Uncle might have a few things to say about that little move of theirs.
I’m guessing something different from most of you. I honestly don’t think Uncle Leo has the time to go chasing after Gunther. We hardly saw him. It could be the hotel people, but Gunther seems to have all his belongings with him, and I would expect the “Deus ex machina” would have covered his hotel bill, at this point, if not Uncle Leo, on behalf of Rosa.
My Guess? It’s the Peruvian Authorities (Immigration, Customs, Security forces)… making sure his departure is “legit” (i.e. he’s not “trafficking” anything… etc. etc.)… The two times I traveled to Chile (while Pinochet was in power), the Chilean security forces were all over the airport, and both times were pre-9/11.
Besides, that might give Gunther one last power spike before he heads home…. ;-)
The only thing that can salvage this arc is if the speaker is…Tiff! Yay! She can afford the plane fare, and…oh shoots, not only does it not make sense, but why would she not want Gunther to come back to America, marry Luann, and leave Quill available? Drats, it’s probably that scene stealer Rosa…:)
I agree with the Uncle Leo guess, only he’s got Rosa bound and gagged with him. He demands that Gunther take “the little troublemaker” back where they came from.
Best thinking of the day, ReallyBad2. Luis put him on the bus, either knew or would have found out its schedule, and so knew or could have found out when it would be back. He also is the only one besides Rosa who knew Gunther was headed for the airport. Luis, of course, would have reported everything to Uncle Leo. So it’s Luis or Leo.
Just checked the back strips and just where the heck did he get luggage coming back from the Village?!?!?! If the bus people dropped him off, he didn’t stop at his “hotel”… and there is no way they could have carried luggage up to the village because it was a cramped van full of supplies…I know the ‘toonist is limited in space but a tour bus is not going to drive 1 person to the airport that didn’t even pay for the tour… perhaps its the tour company rep. waiting to collect the several hundred $s he owes for the week-long tour… or Luis to explain he did what he did because he is “Uncle Leo” and Gunther needed to be kicked in the pants with “an unexpected journey” to man up and not be the wimp he is/was…
Peruvian immigration authorities. By leaving his job at the clinic (unannounced and without the clinic’s permission), Gunther has maybe violated the terms of his “volunteer” visa. Also, by sneaking off into the mountains and then catching a plane back to home, they suspect him of being a cocaine smuggler. Time for the G-man to do the perp walk.
Not Rosa, she is done with him. Could be the uncle or someone from the clinic he worked at.Maybe Luis, but I doubt if he has any reason to talk to Gunther again.
If he was inside the airport I’d guess drug authorities who want to do a body cavity search. Maybe one of those old ladies planted drugs on contraband on him without his knowledge. He didn’t wake up when they changed his shirt so they could have done anything.
Here’s a guess about who that voice is that’s completely different, and it could account for a major change in Gunther’s personality.-The voice might be that of his long-lost father. (“Luke, I am your father…”)-Probably not, but it would be a fun plot twist…
first, about luggage, I guess Luis put Gunther luggage inside the bus and paid for his pass, and the ladies somehow got the bus driver to give a ride to Gunther to the airport; or maybe the ladies going to a different terminal and is part of the courtesy of the bus tour, which might mean that the ladies got back to their hotel and Gunther got back to his residence at Lima and got the luggage…………………second I would say there is a 40 % chance that is the “have we ever seen Uncle Leo?” and 30% chance is the Lady we met at the clinic and 25% chance is Rosa(if we get the surprise that Rosa did comeback to the USA also) and only 5% is immigration(why so unlikely?? because we are right now around new years time, thus we do know he does get to take the plane)
The questioner has the tone of authority, but Gunther has not yet entered the departure terminal it is highly likely to be the Peruvian authorities. From the tone, it is someone who knows Gunther, most likely Uncle Leo, by my previous line of deduction, following Really Bad’s.
But as long as wild speculation is in order, maybe Rosa had second thoughts abut being left alone. (She still will not be ready to leave Peru, but conceivably be ready to return to Lima, following a heart to heart with her uncle.) We know that Gunther returned home after breaking up with Rosa, but lets just suppose a sudden surge of gumption on Gunther’s part, with him telling Rosa they were right to break it off. For a really good film about that kind of gumption, watch The Holiday, with Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, and a really fine performance by Eli Wallach, who died just a few weeks ago.
let’s invent a logical but at same time wild speculation(no aliens in spaceships, or the wizard of oz came)…………..
Gunther is about to see Rosa, who tells him “I saw the error of my ways, i was not ready to help the villagers, I need to study and than form a group to help villagers, and both of us can do that after we graduate, by the way, what we did in my bed at Uncle Leo’s house? I am pregnant………..”
Nope. It’s just that Greg Evans doesn’t know or care about depicting airports. When Luann took Quill to the airport after the drama camp to fly home to Australia, she too went into the gate area, which is not allowed in any airports. It’s just Evans’ mistake.-
You right, so I would say than that is 55% Uncle Leo, 30% the lady of the clinic, 10% Rosa needing to tell him I want you to finish school and I hope you will comeback to help me and 5% immigration
I get the feeling that 2-14 is either Brad/toni setting an specific date for wedding(probably June) or Rosa smarting up about fact that education would give her better tools to help villages, and returns to Gunther, my bet is in Wedding date for Brad
My local daily paper suddenly dropped Luann as of last week. There were letters to the editor.Luann is back! Of course, here I can Luann and thegang in color every day.
> it means absolutely nothing to the plot or storyline>So then why not do it right? As you say, it makes no difference in the storylines whether Quill says good-bye to Rosa and Gunther, and Luann says good-bye to Quill, in the gate area (which is illegal) or in the main terminal (which is where people do say good-bye at the airport). However, making up a situation which is obviously contrary to fact just creates a bothersome distraction from what is meant to be an emotional scene. It would therefore be better to portray the airports realistically.
Shoot, someone always gets my comment before I can post it:“You don’t think you’re getting away from me and our child, do you? Get back to the States and set up a home for us. Oh, and keep the stubble. It makes you look like a man.”
I’m guessing its the woman who runs the Uncle’s practice. Luis had to report back her and told her what was going on and who he left Gunther with. I don’t think the Uncle himself would be hanging out at the airport, and Rosa already said her goodbye.
Doubt it is Rosa – she hugged and kissed him goodbye, knowing he didn’t belong to South America so whoever said that wasn’t Rosa – it is someone who is not pleased he is leaving so it has to be the uncle or the hotel manager if they haven’t paid for the room. OR someone with a crush on Gunther.
Maybe the unseen speaker is someone working in Peru for TJ’s drug cartel (which is the source of his unexplained “wealth”). Gunther is about to become a “mule”.
If Gunther had said ‘So long, and thanks for all the fish’, I would have guessed that the mystery voice was the late science fiction writer Douglas Adams.-I could never understand what everyone saw in that Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy stuff, myself…
@Argy My brain said Sofia, somewhere in the firing of neurons my fingers took over and typed Rosa. Thanks for the catch. lol Not exactly covering myself in glory for being only my second comment. lol
Rosa gave Gunther a hug (which he did not do in return) when they said good-bye in the village. She fully expected him to be at the airport some 6 hours later, and she had no intention of accompanying him there. Why on earth would she go there now? It’s not Rosa, so it’s probably someone from the clinic. The charter bus driver must have phoned Luis to let him know when Gunther would be arriving at the airport.
Here is my prediction…+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++With two days left before the Sunday break… I am guessing it is Rosa… who came back after hearing from Luis about the bus ride (and figuring out the delay)…. she gives Gunther a giant kiss, and sees him off…. with the final line being her saying, " I’ll be seeing you! " leaving the door open to a quick OR distant timeline for Rosa’s return. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++With that in mind, and with the MINOR nature of Gunther’s adventure, I suspect that after Saturday, the next time we see him, he will be shaven, plaid-ed out, and sitting in his first Moony class, sipping a Moonyesque-variant of Starbucks Coffee. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Now, while I am hopeful for Gunther to return to Moony… I had hoped that his return and his new “look” reflected a new change (more of a progression) in attitude for him, and (as stated before) had incorrectly anticipated Luis (in the role of a surrogate father figure) would be his guide on a journey of enlightenment to have Gunther become a more robust, self-assurred, and easy going reflection of himself. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++With all that said, I conclude with…. So…. who the hell really knows what will transpire next? Not me.
Last comment yesterday said ideas are not copyrightable. Which gives me a segue into a comment I wanted to make two days ago, when Sheriff said there was a color error.*(This idea is copyrighted or copywrited or patented or trademarked- by me). We need a box of crayons of disgusting colors. One of my co-workers called new primer of office walls a “diaper-filled brown”. Gunther’s face should have been colored a “puker green”. Would not 10-year-olds INSIST on mom buying these?
RB2…. This may be a “dunce” style question, but how do I access the FaceBook page for Luann? My wife is on FaceBook and I look at her site fairly regularly (once or twice a week) to see what a bunch of relatives are up to. But, how do I find the Luann site? +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Additionally…. there USED to be a comics studio website that was co-authored by Greg and several of his comic writing friends. It seems like this disappeared. Do you know if it is at a new address? And if yes, does Greg still write on it occasionally?
how would Greg show hanky panky? he would not be direct, but we can get clues through Frank and Nancy, and though Brad and Toni..we know that Lue’s parents have done it(besides the obvious how Lue and Brad were conceived), and most of us are sure Brad and toni have gotten together, and most of us feel that lue MIGHT still be virgin but probably gotten to second base with Quill, so is not outside of the realm to end up finding that Gunther is not a virgin without showing them starting to remove each others clothes.. in the old movies, they showed this https://13isyourluckynumber.files.wordpress.com/2009/12/6040-holding-hands-in-bed2.jpg to show a couple got to “know each other” and not show anything else
while everyone is fascinated by the unknown out of view person, my hat is totally off to the senioritas especially that tall no-nonsense looking lady with the glasses and the short chubby blond woman for bringing about what would seem a massive transformation in Gunther. In the last panel he looks relaxed, happy and the comment "thank-you for everything’ sums it up.
His experiences with Rosa at the rural clinic did not accomplish anything. Rather, it was a combination of Luis and the senioritas.
Not Rosa. She was happy to see him go and certainly wouldn’t drop scrubbing toilets and floors to go to Lima. Besides, how would she know he was there? My money’s on one of the synthetic ladies from the plastic surgery clinic.
Gunny is getting pretty scruffy. But who is the off-stage voice? (Too bad we can’t hear, to tell by that.)Will it be Rosa?Rosa’s uncle?Luis? The Amazonian secretary (whose name I have forgotten)?Who would expect Gunther at the airport at this time?
If it’s someone we already know, my guess would be Sofia sent by the uncle. But I like the idea of it being TJ. And will this cause another delay in his departure?
The suspense is too much for me.How can I hope to sleep tonight?Surely it will be the uncle desperately needing computer help only Gunther can provide and willing to pay a huge sum for his services.
“appreciation of British absurdist humor.”.Do they have any other kind of humor? They enjoy Benny HillThe man makes Jethro Bodine seem….well, maybe not smart exactly, that would still be a reach, but smarter.
The voice is analogous to those of us who can’t believe Evans has wimped out on Gunther’s Peruvian adventure with a pat ending like “(and) I spent a week touring Peru…” The End.
well… we still haven’t learned where Gunther acquired a taste for black coffee. so maybe we’re just not done yet. But I give up trying to make predictions; nothing predictable seems to come to pass in this story arc. That said, I don’t think the unknown voice is Rosa’s. She made her intentions clear and said good bye.
(Re: Reheated leftovers:) I had said I didn’t mean “down” as in down in it’s proper usage, yesterday. I meant “down” as in: ’Jane, stop this crazy thing!!!!"
Like I was saying (albeit all cryptical-like) to Argy, the “curtain was still up” over there.. – In the words of Ian Anderson & Co., it’s still “Under Wraps” (♫)…
Don’t encourage them. I hate spoiler alerts. It’s like saying, “don’t look now, but there’s a pink elephant crossing the road!” Yeah, right, not going to look….

Other possibilities:

2. It’s the manager of the hotel where Gunther and Rosa was staying, demanding payment of their bill.

Argy.Bargy2 almost 10 years ago
If Gunther had said ‘So long, and thanks for all the fish’, I would have guessed that the mystery voice was the late science fiction writer Douglas Adams.-I could never understand what everyone saw in that Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy stuff, myself…

@Argy My brain said Sofia, somewhere in the firing of neurons my fingers took over and typed Rosa. Thanks for the catch. lol Not exactly covering myself in glory for being only my second comment. lol

It’s Rosa, and they are finally going to have a big kiss. Thank God, this arc is almost finished!! Boring from start to finish!!!!
ironman01 almost 10 years ago
My prediction take three…the mystery person is Sofia the Executive Secretary. AKA The Peruvian Bombshell.

Or Rosa?
seismic-2 Premium Member almost 10 years ago
Rosa gave Gunther a hug (which he did not do in return) when they said good-bye in the village. She fully expected him to be at the airport some 6 hours later, and she had no intention of accompanying him there. Why on earth would she go there now? It’s not Rosa, so it’s probably someone from the clinic. The charter bus driver must have phoned Luis to let him know when Gunther would be arriving at the airport.
seismic-2 Premium Member almost 10 years ago
Or maybe it’s his fellow Luann-boyfriends-in-exile Aaron Hill and mini-Elvis, urging him to join the club and not go back.

Rosa’s uncle

Not me.
wiselad almost 10 years ago
we talking 10 days since he left with Luis, is unlikely(which is why I put it as 10%) but still possible
drewpamon almost 10 years ago
It’s his Dad. He was a CIA agent on a secret mission to Peru when he was captured and sentenced to 15 years and he just got out.

And if yes, does Greg still write on it occasionally?
wiselad almost 10 years ago
how would Greg show hanky panky? he would not be direct, but we can get clues through Frank and Nancy, and though Brad and Toni..we know that Lue’s parents have done it(besides the obvious how Lue and Brad were conceived), and most of us are sure Brad and toni have gotten together, and most of us feel that lue MIGHT still be virgin but probably gotten to second base with Quill, so is not outside of the realm to end up finding that Gunther is not a virgin without showing them starting to remove each others clothes.. in the old movies, they showed this https://13isyourluckynumber.files.wordpress.com/2009/12/6040-holding-hands-in-bed2.jpg to show a couple got to “know each other” and not show anything else

while everyone is fascinated by the unknown out of view person, my hat is totally off to the senioritas especially that tall no-nonsense looking lady with the glasses and the short chubby blond woman for bringing about what would seem a massive transformation in Gunther. In the last panel he looks relaxed, happy and the comment "thank-you for everything’ sums it up.
His experiences with Rosa at the rural clinic did not accomplish anything. Rather, it was a combination of Luis and the senioritas.
alviebird almost 10 years ago
Gunther said a lot happened. I’m telling you all, he and Rosa are engaged, if not married.
lmonteros almost 10 years ago
Not Rosa. She was happy to see him go and certainly wouldn’t drop scrubbing toilets and floors to go to Lima. Besides, how would she know he was there? My money’s on one of the synthetic ladies from the plastic surgery clinic.
Sisyphos almost 10 years ago
Gunny is getting pretty scruffy. But who is the off-stage voice? (Too bad we can’t hear, to tell by that.)Will it be Rosa?Rosa’s uncle?Luis? The Amazonian secretary (whose name I have forgotten)?Who would expect Gunther at the airport at this time?
Sisyphos almost 10 years ago
—The name of the Amazonian secretary is Sofia, I see in an earlier comment….
wiselad almost 10 years ago
not sure if it is possible, but hope they can be found on wayback site, otherwise, they are truly lost
wiselad almost 10 years ago
now that I think about it…………… would not be funny if it is Rosa, but she waited for him ONLY because silly G forgot his passport?
lynnskay almost 10 years ago
If it’s someone we already know, my guess would be Sofia sent by the uncle. But I like the idea of it being TJ. And will this cause another delay in his departure?
ACTIVIST1234 almost 10 years ago
Got it!*The voice comes from guerillas demanding his money or his Life.*And so he sorrowfully gives them his box of breakfast cereal.
David Huie Green LoveJoyAndPeace almost 10 years ago
The suspense is too much for me.How can I hope to sleep tonight?Surely it will be the uncle desperately needing computer help only Gunther can provide and willing to pay a huge sum for his services.

“appreciation of British absurdist humor.”.Do they have any other kind of humor? They enjoy Benny HillThe man makes Jethro Bodine seem….well, maybe not smart exactly, that would still be a reach, but smarter.

The mysterious person seems to be complaining, and has a sense of authority.
.No one in Peru fills the bill very well. Only Sofia, marginally.

The voice is analogous to those of us who can’t believe Evans has wimped out on Gunther’s Peruvian adventure with a pat ending like “(and) I spent a week touring Peru…” The End.
seismic-2 Premium Member almost 10 years ago
I think Gunther has arrived at the airport in mid-December. So whatever happened after he got off the tour bus, it detained him by about 2 weeks.
RSH almost 10 years ago
well… we still haven’t learned where Gunther acquired a taste for black coffee. so maybe we’re just not done yet. But I give up trying to make predictions; nothing predictable seems to come to pass in this story arc. That said, I don’t think the unknown voice is Rosa’s. She made her intentions clear and said good bye.
