I must take exception. It’s impossible to look bad in a seersucker suit. I doubt that anyone ever regretted leaving the house looking sharp. Fashions may change (indeed, they have to), but style doesn’t.
My step dad had a lot of his clothes from the 1970s. He was wearing an original cream color leisure suit at their wedding. I remember coming over to visit my mom one day only to find her going through his closet. Apparently she’d wait until he was out on the road for his truck driving job, pick a couple of clothing items she didn’t like of his, throw it away, and buy something new for him she did like. A friend of hers liked the idea and tried it on her husband, but she had to make sure he was still out on the road when the garbage man came. Otherwise her husband would dig through the trash to get his clothes back.
We had a CEO (actually, the Senior Librarian, who thought of herself as the CEO) back in the mid-80s who had a coterie of women as her senior people. I remember when women wore big shoulder pads, and there they were – 4 of them, in a row, walking towards me down a passageway. They each wore an outfit of bold colours – red, yellow, orange. Each of them wore a wide, black belt; now what are the colours that poisonous animals and insects wear to scare off potential enemies? Black banded red, yellow or orange colours. I found a good excuse to (as they say in psychology) “leave the field”.
The white belt makes a periodic resurrection among pro golfers. “Nothing says you’re serious about your round than a fashionable belt with a crisp pair of slacks and a collared polo shirt. The belt can bring your entire outfit together into one cohesive piece.” (2016)
I have a paisley caftan top and black velvet slacks that I wear to the rock & roll outfit contest each year at our monthly dinners. With hubby in a tie-dye shirt & jeans, a flower behind my ear, and my hair crimped, we win a prize every time.
I would have never owned a leisure suit except that my wife bought it for me. I think I wore it twice.
The rest of my wardrobe is in some cases, 30 years old, but since it’s “men’s clothing” it’s really never out of style. Men’s clothing has no style :).
Except for ties. I have them in widths ranging from a few microns to the width of a lobster bib. Somewhere in that range is the current style.
Sooner or later they come back in different forms. Girdles come back as spandex body stockings, bell bottoms come back as baggy trousers, leisure suits come back as realtor jackets. :)
Gawd, am I old! The only missing tombstone is “Men’s Hats.” By which I mean the fedora and the like, not baseball caps. I remember both my dad and my grandpa would never, ever, leave the house without their hat.
You mean the exaggerated versions of these sewing tricks went out of fashion. They are still there and used in every possible way to enhance one’s figure, posture, or general presence.
As an axample: a custom made man’s suit has all the tricks of the trade on those tombstones to disguise: short legs, skinny shoulders, beer belly, etc….The same applies to a woman’s custom made dress, or suit, or pants…
Yes, even seersucker fabric has never gone out of fashion.
Well, maybe the name “leisure suit” has lost its cachet….
In the Deep South, (New Orleans & Baton Rouge), Court appearances for Attorneys & Experts must show up in suits. Seersucker is the only way – I own 5 suits & 2 sport coats for Summertime. It’s still THE thing down here, including Sunday Mass.
4. Ladies’ Tees saying “bitch”, “Rich man’s plaything, Poor man’s dream”, “Voulez vous coucher aves moi c’est soir”, or any other slogan the responses to which they complain about.
My mother once bought me a lemon yellow polyester leisure suit! So I went into the bedroom ostensibly to try it on and then claimed it didn’t fit. I exchanged for a pair of jeans.
