“Same here. Instead of having to buy separate trash bags for the small wastebaskets,”
I do that also, but I take it one step further. I ask them to bag the groceries in ‘paper in plastic’. I then use those as regular trash bags, the paper allows the bag to stand up while the plastic one contains any liquids that may escape from the paper bag. No buying of trash bags at all.Did I mentioned that I’m 70yrs old and live on a low fixed income, hence all the money saving tips.
When I bring in bags, most of the time the cashiers act like it’s a problem or inconvenience to them to have to deal with anything other than their built-in bag holders and bags.
Just for the record the ban for the whole state for “large grocery stores” went into effect July 1, 2015, but for the little stores the deadline is July 1, 2016.
And the problem is both about wild life and such, but also about landfills. The plastic doesn’t decompose. And these bags can’t be recycled because they are so thin and ironically don’t have much plastic in them All the larger plastic items can be recycled, along with paper, and metals, and such. Other than stuff that is food waste or has been touched by food waste, almost everything can go into recycling of some kind here in San Jose. And I live in a townhouse community, and the recycle is taken away for free, but the community pays for the garbage to be taken away. So in affect we get paid to do the right thing and recycle useful things instead of putting them in a landfill.

My solution was to grab a cart in the parking lot to return to the store, this helped me to remember to bring my reusable bags from the car..Now I live in India and purchase produce from street vendors. I save up the disposable bags and then take them as a gift to vendors who then save on needing to purchase new bags (future trash)..As near as I can tell no one else here is doing this. It feels really good. The vendors are glad to get them..Health regulations/liability in USA would most likely preclude a place in or at stores to drop off bags for others to use..Living in India allows me to see some of the best, and the most problematic, manifestations of a more libertarian society. This is one that appears to be working really nicely.
Like many others, I, too have left the bags in the truck. One of the local health food stores doesn’t provide bags or boxes. One day I was lucky and only had bags of raw, unsalted nuts and was able to get them all into my big purse. Otherwise I would have had to make 2 trips to the truck.
Recycling made easy:.Rule one of good ecological practice is “always put things back where you got them”..Paper is made from trees, which grow from the earth. And plastic is made from petroleum, which is also extracted from the earth..So whether you choose paper or plastic, you should always put the bags into the ground they came from..How is this even a problem?
I always put the bags in the passenger seat so that when I grab my purse as I’m leaving the car I will see them and take them. HA! Sounds good, right? I STILL forget them. I think I need to tie them to my purse.
Today’s strip is me right now. I have at least 10 of those bags in my trunk. Do I ever remember to take them in and use them? Nope! And it makes me mad at myself every time I forget!
We have a dog and cannot walk her without a plastic bag and I use them for two of my trash cans. I do not think I could get along if they were banned in Michigan. I don’t throw any plastic bags away and request no bags for certain items.
Lots of Californian talk on plastic bags today. I’m in Nebraska & I thought California did outlaw the plastic bags. I gethem from the store but take them back to the recycle barrels when I remember. I have an overstuffed large plastic bag because I have forgot them the last few store trips!
This happens to me a lot, but I just put them back in the cart and push it to the car, and bag them there. I sometimes notice other people do this too. I’m surprised nobody commented on that solution yet!
Those reusable bags are even worse for the environment than the plastic ones CA has banned. The carbon footprint from the manufacture of those reusable plastic bags makes them something like 32 times worse than the thin ones, and that’s if you only use the thin ones once. Most of us recycle them in one way or another (use as trash bags, donate to some charity that wants them, put them in the recycle bin) so that makes the ratio even worse. I have some reusable canvas bags that don’t have that stigma, but they are finally wearing out and no one makes them anymore. So I don’t feel guilty about not using reusable bags because I’m actually doing more for the environment by NOT using them.
The boxes you can get to transport your things at Costco, Sam’s, etc. are great; they’re recyclable, they’re not likely to be used a tie up fast-food detritus or dirty diapers and left in a parking lot somewhere. Not to mention that some are even the perfect configuration to be used for file folders.
California’s statewide ban on plastic bags was put on hold; it will be on the November ballot. Some cities, like Sacramento, appear to have their own bans/restrictions in place.
I had some ugly fabric that I received from my mother. I kept it for years and when my local grocery started to deduct 5 cents for each bag I brought in, I found a bag pattern on Google and made 6 bags about 22"X22" with handles. I keep them on the floor behind the drivers seat and mostly remember them. My newspaper is delivered in a plastic bag (thrown from a car) everyday. I save them up and give them to my daughter who uses them when she walks her dog. The bags are long and skinny and perfect for slipping over the hand and arm to pick up any size of mess.
There are at least two ways to avoid this problem. First, I put the shopping list and the grocery money in a pocket of one of the reusable bags. I NEVER forget to take my bags, and if I do, I go back to get them, because I can’t shop without the list..But I saw a woman who forgot her bags just toss everything back into her cart and take her groceries out to her car to put them in the bags there. Nancy could do that..My Friends of the Library group made book bags with pockets. People like them because their library card is always with their library books in a handy-dandy carrier..Last thing: It amazes me how many people comment on this comic! Hardly anyone will read my comments; I never read below the “Load more comments” box.
The preamble shows a tree and an oil well. News flash: plastic bags are mode from our abundant natural gas, not oil! The whole paper vs. plastic issue is the perfect example of what happens when we elect people who are clueless about the science behind what they legislate. For the facts just Google “reason magazine reusable bags” to see the facts behind why the plastic bag ban is actually dangerous to your health.
Easy solution to this problem. When you get the bags emptied after the last shopping trip, take them out to the car again and — this is the key — put them on the front passenger seat. When I get into the car again, my purse sits on top of them. Bingo! When I hit the grocery store, there are the bags, daring me to forget to take them in!
Cartoon – okay, but Nancy needs to be more full figured to balance the largeness of her head and hair. And, the bagger, with that chin, could be Jay Leno’s son. But Greg draws a nice SUV, as well as buildings and outside art. Other than Gunther and Tiffany, the characters are dull, but the artwork keeps getting better all the time.
These “nothing sundays” seem such a waste. .There is so much hanging plot going on in Luann that could at least be touched on..It was not always thus on Luann. Have times changed?.Other strips still have things actually going on on Sunday.
I tend to go for paper. I reuse the paper bags to carry out the recycling to the bin. When the bags get too worn and torn, I then recycle them by putting them in the bin as well.
It’s a lose lose. Plastic is harder to get rid of, but Paper spews much more pollutants into the air and water when it is beinf manufactured. Sort of a pay me now or pay me later deal
“A trunk full of reusable bags and soft-sided coolers and then leave them in the car”*M2MM – thanks for explaining today’s strip— I didn’t get it. I walk to the store with a bag or two in my backpack so have never had this problem.
Unfortunately, if a cut of meat is especially, uh, bloody, that seems to loosen the plastic wrapping. So I’ve had packages of meat that leaked into my cloth bags. When I scrubbed the bags to try to remove the blood, the thin cloth developed holes.
I understand that the plastic in the small carrier bags doesn’t break down in landfills, but there are a lot of things put in landfills that also cause problems and have yet to be addressed very well. Tires are one, and it is especially dangerous, because once tires catch fire, you can’t put that fire out.
Meanwhile, on my individual scale, I continue to use the small plastic carriers (double bagged if meat is involved), and reuse them to dispose of the food waste I generate (egg shells, peelings, etc.) because we dont’ have any recycling process for food waste to create mulch here. And I am in bear country, so the more securely I wrap food waste, the less of a problem I cause that way…
-And on another story about our environment, the City of Cape Coral (on the west coast of Florida) was hit by a tornado late last night. Winds of 135 miles per hour; not sure what that is on the score they use for tornadoes, but it affected at least 12 square miles, and for awhile,10,000 homes were without power. No word yet on injuries or deaths, but lots of homes trashed.
Connection to environment is that this is not really a ‘tornado season’ for Florida, except when El Nino (if that is the right spelling) occurs and affects the temperature of oceans and bays…
I have reusable bags and I use them all the time. They’re bigger than the plastic bags the store carries so they can hold more, they’re also stronger than the plastic bags (one jar of spaghetti sauce ripping through the bag and smashing on the sidewalk was enough for me). Since I generally use the bus for transportation I can’t stick things in the trunk and get them home, I need the bags, and I’ve found them useful for other things like holding the left over yarn balls from my knitting and my board games when I go somewhere for a game. Since I also use them to carry my empties to the store I don’t generally forget them either.
Actually, I just thought of an idea: I set up a location-based reminder on my iPhone for the parking lot of my local supermarket. So every time I pull into that lot, my iPhone will remind me to use my bags. Problem solved!
I rarely bring bags into a store. I just have them put them back into a cart and then put them in the bags, totes and coolers I keep in the back of my van sorting by type. fridge, frozen, pantry and cleaners. Nancy could have done the same instead of being mad at herself since she had the bags in her car.
I do sympathize with Nancy. But cloth re-useables are suspect for health reasons and for their limited endurance. I do not like paper bags, because they are so clumsy and hard to carry (after being used to plastic bags with handles for many years). The heavy-ply, sturdier plastic bags may be reusable, but, like Nancy, though worse, I just let them stack up in the corner of my kitchen where I have a carton for bags….
You know, Nancy is “kicking herself” for her oversight, but her expression could also look as though she’s "practicing the ‘one mile carry’ ", which she could be doing (unless it’s a store that has free stock boy help to get the groceries in the car, as one store chain in my area does) as she lugs the groceries to her vehicle, even if she doubles her bags (the ones in our area seem a little thinner than in years past)… – And before I forget, a shout out to Herbie and the Baker’s Dozen… with the score of 53-13….
Reusable bags are dangerous unless washed regularly and if you do wash them it takes water and soap and energy. The plastic ones have lots of secondary uses are cheap and made from waste products.
I’m just now getting to catch up on my reading, so I’m almost two days behind on this frame, but I find, even if I bring in a re-usable bag, the cashier automatically and quickly reaches for the plastic bags (for those States that have not yet instituted a ban) and I have to quickly try to stop them, so I can use the recycle bag.
Most stores in our area have signs reminding you to bring your bags, but the other alternative is to just put it back into the cart and pack the back at the car.

You’re in good (bad?) company. I do it all the time.

Actually, I just thought of an idea: I set up a location-based reminder on my iPhone for the parking lot of my local supermarket. So every time I pull into that lot, my iPhone will remind me to use my bags. Problem solved!

I use a plastic bag to load up smaller plastic bags and when it’s full, put it with my recyclables.

Just buy more reusable bags

I hope that you don’t have bags under your eyes.

I see that Nancy’s suffering from Middle Age Alzheimer’s Disease. It’s called CRS. Can’t Remember rhymes with Hit.

The bags always get carried to the front seat along with your purse. It’s not that hard.Don’t forget to buy Purina Theatre Chow for Prudence!

LOVE seeing food shoppers bringing in their own bags! That means there’s more for me to always have a good stock of garbage bags on hand.
Which are, amazingly enough…..recyclable!

Thanks for sharing. Mesh bags do have a lot of advantages as a reusable bag. In addition to your points, it also uses less materials to make.

Most stores in our area have signs reminding you to bring your bags, but the other alternative is to just put it back into the cart and pack the back at the car.

Yeah… I’m always doing that. Leaving my bags in the car
