Quill is right than Luann about booking a trip without discussion, but he also should have been more clear when it came to the New York thing ten months ago. All in all, they need to breakup.

I was so afraid that there was going to be a big Valentine’s Day make up between these two – and yes, there is still Sunday’s – but this is almost a certainty that this is the end.

Now Luann needs to take a break and have time to discover that this isn’t high school and having or not having a boyfriend does not define her socially or as a validation of one’s social status and worth.

The day before Valentine’s day, a break-up if that is to be the case. The crux of the issue, his real priority, her or the theater. She wants him no matter what, except he wants the theater, no matter what she wants really. I guess I am guilty of over-analyzing but the question is who is willing to give up the something for the other? Not Quill.

I’m sorry, but I have to side with Quill here – he was given an amazing opportunity and he and Luann were not talking, so he did what he could to further his life. Luann then came to him with tickets all booked and stuff, and though I do think that Quill should have talked with her shortly after receiving the job, it was still a little too forward for Luann to book all the stuff.

Ah, Luann, there are points of demarcation in every relationship and once you pass them, you can rarely go back. If a break up is what you wanted or needed to do, then job done. If you were doing it for the drama and you reconsider later, you may be in for a rude surprise.

Compare this with healthy relationships (Brad/Toni). Whatever issues they have, they still put each other first. In truth, if Luann didn’t stand up for herself, Quill would’ve been a boyfriend in name only. She wants the real thing. Quill, on the other hand, is quite right. Acting doesn’t come along every day. If he truly makes it big in theatre, replacing Luann is a trivial matter.

I say that someone brought up the Christmas break discussion during Halloween and Quill brings up- “Did you do get ‘A?’ Did you get ‘B?’ She gets the tickets and the hotel as Quill has instructed if she really wanted to go. They have one bad fight and Quill writes the trip off WITHOUT COMMUNICATING WITH HER FIRST WHICH WOULD GO SOMETHING LIKE THIS: ‘Luann, I just got offered an acting job and it’s a major move for me. We seem to be butting heads right now. So, I say summer would be better for us to take that New York trip. If you’re going to chew my head off about postponing again, I’m going to remind you that we’re butting heads right now. Hopefully this break will either get us to calm down and work things out or this relationship will just end. If you don’t want to do that then, let’s just end it graciously and just say good bye to each other right now.”

I’m not letting Luann off the hook here. If she was doing all the leg work for the best deals on this trip etc., seeing that she probably was scrounging around for the money and probably borrowing money from her parents to cover the rest then this romantic gesture wasn’t a good idea.HER PHONE CALL SHOULD HAVE GONE SOMETHING LIKE THIS: ‘Quill, I am sorry about that ugly fight that we had and I want to make it up to you. Remember, during Halloween where it was obvious I had nothing planned. Well, I did it. I got the planning, and the money ready. I’m staring at the plane ticket and the hotel reservations that I’m getting for this trip all I need is a ‘Yes, let’s go’ from you. If the answer is no- you have to tell me why.’

It probably would have ended the same but still COMMUNICATION. It’s a big deal.

For those of you who say that Luann and Quill are too young for a commitment, let me differ. It’s not that they’re too young for commitment but rather that they’re not ready for one. But they’re not too young for a relationship; in fact, they’re at the right age to learn about what true love is and what it takes to start, build, and maintain a relationship. This has been the first love—for either of them—and it’s a time for them to make mistakes that, hopefully, they’ll learn from and fix before they embark on any future relationships. You can’t have a successful relationship if you never have a past one to learn from.

Typical, the girl has all these feelings and does not tell the guy and he goes on about his life. They do not have an emotional bond strong enough to hold them together. Luann is coming across very unsympathetic, the only thing she has not said yet is: “If you don’t know what you have done then I am not going to tell you”

@thefloydI agree communication is important and they DO need to work on it … But not necessarily together. I think if they had been communicating better, they actually would have ended it sooner. I don’t think there’s anything wrong ending a dating relationship. They’re dating, not married.

Well as Ricky interpreted Lucy’s big moment: " the time has come" and Lucy replied “this is it” Course that was in regards to having a baby. But as much as I hate to admit it, the time has come for a break up.

However, re Q: You don’t book a trip without discussion? As Jim T and Simon and me ( and others have pointed out). They discussed it in the Summer, at Halloween and at Halloween Q chastised Lu that they had made no definite plans: That she had no plane tickets, not booked a flight and no hotel so it was not real. Now she does everything according to his rules and its not real?

Lu knew for Q that theatre will always be first … but Q should have told her about the acting job ( lol when they weren’t fighting or making out of course… so when does that give them time to discuss anything?)

So Valentine’s day will mean the end of Lu and Q…. and maybe the beginning for Mrs. B and Mr. Gray…. Fasten your seatbelts folks it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

My only unanswered question at this point: If Quill takes the touring job, will Pru go with him or will she continue to stay at Luann’s house ( if so what interaction/ dialog will there be between Lu and Pru)?

Quill’s comments would bear more weight if he’d ever had to deal with the rejection that actual actors have to deal with on a daily basis. But since he’s gotten literally every part he’s ever tried for, his bit about a “big break” rings a little hollow. So who wants to bet that if they do break up, he never actually comes back from this touring show? It does seem a little too convenient, and fits in with the pattern of love interests never staying around town once the story has run their course. At least they learned from Diane’s exit and started giving these characters a reason to leave rather than just having them vanish from existence one day.

“Theater jobs don’t come along every day…..”

Really Q-ball? They seem to fall into your lap on a regular basis with little or no effort on your part.

So you got a job for a week with an acting company that for some unknown reason doesn’t have understudies for their main players which is why they turned to you. Of course, makes perfect sense.

And all you people who are saying “Luann should have talked to him about the trip first”, how do you know she didn’t try? She’s tried to talk to him before about things she thought were exciting/important, only to have him ignore her. .

Quilly, go off somewhere with Pru. As you told Gunther, “I like Pru, we have fun together, we have tons in common.”

What Gunther should have said was: “Wow. Too bad you don’t feel that way about Luann.”

Lu, kick this jerk to the curb, and don’t shed any tears over him. As I said before you can’t lose something you never had.

But please, DO NOT GO with the Lu-Gunther pairing!!!

I still say Lu should meet Piro. Pire turns out to be a very talented musician. Lu remembers she is a talented singer. They do an impromptu show at The Fuse, where Mr. Gray hears them, and uses his many contacts to get them a record deal.

    Now, THAT would be interesting!

there is some similarity to Jonah in that sense, tho it may just be superficial and represent a bias on Mr. Evans part toward people in that profession. He may perceive it as being too hard for actors to balance work and family life, tho even in Hollywood there are examples that do.

In other words, what she was getting out of the relationship, the occasional furtive supply closet slap and tickle with all the angst associated, she can get almost anywhere. If she wants to have a permanent relationship with Quill, and has no other aspirations, for herself, than teaching elementary school, why, the resolution is obvious. “Quill, I’m going with you if you will have me. I understand you have tremendous stage potential, and I want to be there to support you. If it works out, great, If it doesn’t, we are both still young and can look for a different career path later.”

Fathergod, while Implausible certainly over-reacted every few days recently, i think that in your note asking for a parting of the ways you also are over-reacting. You may well disagee with my take but it is my take. In the last few weeks Implausible has posted many more posts which include actual thought out reasoning about the characters than that individual had done before, and the worrying about possible indirect insults (which did not read as insults to others) has decreased the majority of the time. That is learning and is good. It is not the behavior of a troll. For whatever reasons that fine progress appears to be hard won. My hope is that progress will continue. Often, once begun, it does. So, i have to respectfully and politely disagree with you. No lightning bolts, please.

Has anyone else noticed that chunks of comments, multiple sequential ones are again temporarily disappearing till comments are refeshed, but that the reply function is also glitchy today?

I recall that when Bernice asked Luann if she had told Quill of her love that Luann vacillated. To some that seemed just that she had not told him, but to me it read differently. I think Luann realized that she did not love him. Obviously, i coukd be wrong, but it is what i took from it. Meanwhile, Quill’s behavior is not consistent with love. I think this was habit and some obsession on the part of each, that each was in love with the idea of love, but NOT in love with each other

I’m not n the breakup crowd, but I see the writing on the Evans’ wall. I miss the fun Luann/Quill relationship and I’m guessing they both do, too. I miss their united against all people places and distances. But with all the kick him to the curb comments by this test audience, what else do you expect the Evanses to do.

I have moved coast to coast and overseas with my husband’s job. I’ve stayed home and had fun with our kids when his job took him out of town. It didn’t mean he didn’t love me or us. We weren’t 2nd. It was his job. If he/we wanted his career to move forward, that was what we had to do. But there are always tough times, oh buoy, were there tough times.

Listen all you younger generations- when it gets tough, you hold on tighter. Then your relationship is stronger when you come through the trials. Every time you learn from it. And I still enjoy a little slap and tickle, without the slap. Those romantic interludes are what keep it fun.

As Luann’s boyfriend, perhaps. As for being the last time he’s seen in the strip, period, that remains to be seen (or, not seen?)

You must be new here, so I’ll explain it to you: when a love interest ceases to be a love interest, they don’t hang around. They leave town entirely, or at very least avoid all the characters like the plague. Let’s look at past examples:Aaron Hill (moved to Hawaii)Miguel (went back to Spain)Diane (simply disappeared)Stuart (also disappeared)Zane (anyone even know where he went?)Ben (went home to NY, presumably)Rosa (in Peru raking rocks and gathering sticks)

Now he may be seen once or twice for closure’s sake, but if he breaks up with Luann his days of being an actual character in the strip are finished.

Will we find out if Pru is working with Quill on his spring break? Luann is right to get it done either way. If Pru is involved, it’s just ten more nails in the coffin. Luann needs a new focus – but hopefully not a big rebound relationship right away.

OK their both wrong in the sense of being wrong. Luann thought it was right to book a trip that they’ve had only one talk about. That was wrong of her. Quill is right of putting his job ahead of his relationship, putting his responsibilities for a job there chances are very few to come by. It depends on how you look at it. Actors in the very beginning of their career (even after they’ve been at it for at least twenty years) find it very hard to find jobs and establish themselves. Yes, they do need a break, but Luann can’t get mad at Quill because of his career choice. What is wrong of him is him not talking about this with Luann, I will give you that. But my point still stands, they need to break up so we can move on and focus on Mr. Gray.

You comments on some of the differences between this cartoon couple and real life committed couples are excellent. I think another factor has to be added in. My suspicion is that like some people in real life, especially kids, they may be in love with the concept of love rather than with each other.

I don’t see breaking up over career moves and not enough time. Those things they can change. Even having different interests can be worked out by taking an interest in what makes the other person happy.

But breaking up while they are dating because it doesn’t work anymore can be the beginning of the next stage of their lives. And I think that is what everyone here seems to want.

My college boyfriend broke up with me because I am a horrible dancer and he couldn’t imagine going through life with someone who couldn’t dance. Broke my heart at the time.

After all, this is only a comics strip.

I have more respect for Brad Pitt. He seems to be in a good fit now. The original poster might mean Luann would kick herself if Quill becomes successful, rich, and famous, but would she really? As a young woman, before i met my husband there was a handsome man in a family with great wealth who proposed to me twice. He was a friend, but we each wanted something different from marriage. I have always known that i was right in thanking him for the honor of being asked but saying, “no”. It has been decades since i have seen him; he was older than i and may have since passed away. With a famous husband there would also be the pressures of being too often denied privacy, needing the money earned just to not be in a fishbowl. That can be a difficult burden.

I didn’t see that one. Could you please tell me where it was? I totally missed it.

It was part of a sidebar thing here on the GoComics page to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Luann’s 18th birthday the strip. Everyone voted on how Luann would end up … with who, how many kids, what career … and it turned out to be with Quill, two kids (one of each), and a teacher. Greg drew a one-panel which was included with the vote results here on the page, but it was never one of the newspaper strips.

I guess I’m in the camp that thinks it’s time for Q/Lu to part company. But there are some logistical issues with which to deal. Biggest one being, Lu living in the house with Pru. And Q coming over to the house to have theater chats with Pru, etc.

Hopefully, this will be the impetus for Lu to transfer to Moony and live “on campus” so that she can meet new people, have Bern (and Dez) off which to bounce things, and eliminate the issues with being around Pru (and Q as well). I’m pretty sure she can avoid the drama dept. over at Moony…. in more ways than one! ;-P

Just read an article that stated " An Oxford study revealed that Australian men are the worst husbands in the world due to their unwillingness to share domestic duties. Further studies have revealed that Australian men are sub-par lovers, likely to cheat on their girlfriends or dump them if they gain weight." If true, perhaps it is Luann who has narrowly escaped!

I put more blame on Quill here – he knew Luann was planning for that trip, and he took the job without telling her (probably without even thinking of her). Fine if his career comes first at this point, but he should of had the decency to discuss this with her first, not suddenly bring it up after the fact. He treated her like crap here. I think at the very least they need a breather from each other.

This has been coming for a while. I believe Quill yipped at Luann for not making plans regarding hotel and airfare at Xmas time and then with the Fuse opening, it was decided that they would not go to NY at that point. So she makes plans and now she’s in the wrong. Besides… it was after their “fight” that he decided to take the theater gig. He says that there should have been some “discussion” about Luann booking the plane tix and hotel.. but what about him making his plans – why no “discussion?” Unless he thought it was over at that point and if that’s true, his commitment to the relationship is clearly not what Luann’s was. Don’t blame her for being pi$$ed.. I would be too.

I’m glad that Luann had the courage to be the first to suggest a break-up and to say it calmly (relatively so). Quill knew he had a problem in his relationship with Luann (Gunther made him think about that) but he’s been avoiding it, as if just looking the other way will make a problem disappear, and Luann was too much in fantasy-land with the planning and even paying for a trip w/o any consultation. It is almost as if she was using it as a final test of Quill’s commitment. I don’t think this is Quill’s exit from the strip. He is too tied in with other characters … . Gunther, Nancy, Frank, Pru (who is not going anywhere) even Mrs. Berger and Mr. Gray. The Dec 25 holiday card showed characters and their relative prominence. Quill was in the back. Pru was in between Frank and Nancy. Gunther and Tiffany were sitting close and Bernice was with her dorm crowd. I really hope that Luann will start doing other things instead of beginning a new relationship.

Luann, Quill wanted to talk but you were being difficult at New Years. That’s the reason he cancelled the trip and got a theater job. -Quill, in a relationship it is your responsibility to make your girlfriend feel loved. Even though it was Luann that was difficult, it is your job to communicate to her that you got the theater job and ask her if it is okay to cancel the trip.-A relationship is not one-sided and they both messed up. Luann has been difficult and Quill has not been communicating. They are both not responsible enough to be in a serious relationship yet and they should probably take a break from each other until they are able to acquire the responsibilities

I think LuAnn should take her mother to NYC and while there go looking at colleges. she is a take 2 and transfer student, she should have saved a bundle on the first two years (which are now up) go explore in a new area. If teaching is your passion, go look at Columbia Teachers college for grad school. They have a good department of Arts and Humanities, you liked the art classes you’ve taken, go learn to teach art.

“Why do you spout fake song titles? Just curious….”^In my mind, I was coming up with “episode titles” or “captions” for the particular day’s strip. I use the “♫” for a “song title”, when inserting one into those captions, or a “♪” when incorporating a lyric or famous line in one, though. Curiously, if you ever saw some popular TV shows, they also have used song lyrics or song titles in the names of particular TV episodes. One such sitcom named every episode after a song title (with a twist, here and there)!
