Thrilled that Pru and Luann are going along with it, indulging her. I know the trolls will be upset about that, claim that Nancy would never put up with that nonsense. They are just having fun, making Shannon happy – a little girl who probably has little happiness in her life with a largely absentee dad. Pru, being theatrical, is pulling for Shannon to continue with her portrayal of a princess/queen for the fun of it. Typical of Luann to give up quickly. She gets bored quickly – sound familiar? (Hint, that is why she has no ambition, has no goal, doesn’t know what she wants and is boring as a person – BUT is good with children, but not in this instance, apparently).
It’s good that they are playing with Shannon. But it seems to me that there’s only one way they are going to get ahead of enabling Shannon as the perpetual boss.
They need to get really creative themselves, and manage to get Shannon interested in something they originate. When Shannon finds she is having fun with someone else’s ideas, she may warm up to the notion of a two-way street.
One minute you’re riding gigantic metal dinosaurs…next minute, they change into fast moving ninja hyper-vehicles, that combine into a giant robot….but, before you know it, the robot’s been banished to some dimensional trap that it’s not supposed to get out of, so your base commander rents you out some new costumes, and suddenly your “Tiny Town City” turns into the old west, and you’re now battling Putty Monsters from the deep sea….all of a sudden, your chief nemesis appears, and is a giant Chef who hurls cake batter at you. You look up at him…now back at yourself. Now back up at him….then, suddenly…. he has tickets to that thing you love….but now, you’re riding on a horse! No…I meant cow. No… scratch that… it’s a “Rapping Manatee”. And suddenly, your Chef monster gave up a life of crime, and is now a “DubStep DJ” (Guess that’s still a crime, in like 2 1/2 states….).
-
You turn to scratch your head at what’s going on, along with your fellow Ninja/Cowboy Baseball Nitro-Charging Funny Car Riders From Space…but the tall Red haired girl and the clueless guy with a hero chin that was standing next to you are gone! In their place, is a stubby, pudgy guy with a sandwich…who was a good guy turned bad…then good, then bad…and suddenly, he made up his mind, once and for all! But five minutes later, you’re falling onto a giant mattress factory, and someone else takes your place on the “Hero Team Force Five”! You just shrug your shoulders, and walk away….
-
Just another day in “Shannonland”.
-
…Or that time you hung out with “that ‘bossy’ girl always calling out to you for answers, but going with what she wants, anyway, Dora The Explorer”….
-
…Or even as an actor in an “Old Spice Commercial”…
-….Or, as a "Dino/Ninja/Space/Cowboy/Underwater/Power Ranger (they change the format every season, or every 100,000 miles)….
Well we now know how Jonah bonds with Shannon – all these acting games. Only I suspect that Jonah is always in charge. So now Shannon thinks she can apply these skills when she is with other people.
Have we seen Shannon with any other kids yet? A very urgent mission, as Shannon will have to learn how to interact with her peers – without the benefit of sympathy.
Is this meant to be whimsical? If so, it could show why Team Evans wants to focus on Shannon. They get so little opportunity for whimsy with the older cast of Gunther, Bernice, etc.
Shannon’s 6? One or two of her peers in preschool and kindergarten should have broken her whiny, bossy spirit by now. There always is one or two kids the same age that would have told her off by now.
At least Puddles (Superdog Chomper) has been ‘gently’ released, and is now – as far away as possible – taking in that thing known as – uhhh – Oh yeah! – OXYGEN!!! :)
Panel 3 reminds me of the old bit that the Looney Tunes (and perhaps others) did – where, when greeted at the door, the butler would say, “Walk this way!” . In one scene, the ‘walk’ is very similar to Shannon’s ‘promenade’, and Daffy, doing the same walk, replies, “T’ain’t easy!”
It looks like we’re still knee deep in Greg’s Kiddie-cartoon with no exit in sight. I would like to think that in the version of Luann, printed in France, Toni and Brad never got a phone call and never got out of bed, and are only just now taking a shower.
I still fail to understand why Pru is even in this strip. She’s a culturally aware lesbian from the big city, with professional theater experience on her resume. Why is she a waitress in a vaguely-conceived “event space” in a fly-over town rooming with a wishy-washy non-entity like Luann? It certainly can’t be to “further her career.” It would only make sense if she left New York to escape something unpleasant, and if that is planned for the plot, maybe it’s time to move it along. The most interesting thing about her so far is that she’s gay (whooppee….), and the strip has done exactly nothing with that fact besides disclose it.
The adults DO and WILL tell Shannon, “Enough of this. You had your fun. Now come to the bed so we can go over the rules.” ALL children need structure, rules and boundaries. But NOT to simply sit there like a figurine on a shelf waiting for her dad to pick her up. She shall be allowed to be six. She is six only once in her lifetime.
I know this is a comic, but the child has to learn how to keep herself busy. Make her sit down and read a book or do a puzzle by herself. If she is constantly entertained by someone else, her attention span will never increase and she will not be able to function as an adult.
What is it with Pru and her obsession with panties? BTW, I, like many women, don’t like the word “panties”. Sounds like something only little children wear. I prefer to say underwear, or knickers.
General FYI: from the Luann Facebook page, Karen’s take on all this :
." Welcome to the Realm of Imaginary Rules! For any one who’s ever tried to play along with a young child, you know how this goes: adult tries to apply logic, child applies whimsy."
Lots of fun, nothing unusual for a child, what is going on behind the scenes with Jonah being such an absentee father, and the dumping of Shannon on Toni and Brad and its effect on their marriage, and, wait…I tend to get too serious sometimes with this. She is very much a willful child, with relatively normal King (Queen) baby syndrome, but as she grows and gets love and guidance I bet she can become a very good growing young child, and young adult eventually. Of course this is Luannverse we are talking about.
Okay, a recent survey (VOTER survey) found that most Americans, of any background mostly AGREE on what it takes to be an American. (Surprise!)
I figured it may be fun to take variations of those answers and see how they apply to Shannon and her acceptance by the 2D world and the 3D world.
The most important positive point to most was respecting the institutions and laws. Let’s make that applicable to Shannon. People differ in how unhappily they voice their upset with Shannon not having structure and rules in her life, but both the people who love Shannon’s character and those who hate it seem to want someone to lay done helpful behavioral guidelines for Shannon. What about the characters? They seem to be lagging behind on that score but that could reflect an awkward situation (setting rules for another’s child) as well embracing the comedy involved. Okay, the next most important agreed upon point in the survey is having citizenship. For Shannon I guess that means being part of the family. That has increased for her but her status is still new. Will the script go to that being a topic more and more? There were two other very agreed upon positives. The first is accepting diversity in the population, and the second is speaking English. Shannon DOES seem to have strength in accepting a range of people, perhaps because she has been plopped down with so many, so often, though her inability to yet comprehend institutions and laws is causing problems. I will alter the ability to communicate for speaking English because on an everyday level that is what it comes to. In this Shannon has trouble. She has difficulty not only in listening but in understanding why she should listen. Many of her statements are commands rather than interactive communication.
There were also points on which many or most people of any background or group who took the survey tended to disagree, or had tepid agreement from a few. Being born in the U.S. or living in the U.S. most of one’s life kind of fell in the mid range where a few approved and few disapproved, but the topics were not treated by most respondents as important. Translate this to Shannon and there is room for her as a new character to find her spot in the comic.
What people in all groups strongly felt is NOT important for being an American is being of European heritage. Only a few felt that way. The splay was greater for being Christian though its acceptance as a concept was tepid even with the group that slightly agreed, but scores in none of these four tepid to disagreed with categories were high enough to be passing grades in most schools. It might have been interesting if Shannon had been created as biracial, but otherwise I am having trouble finding anything the latter questions might tell about Shannon’s acceptance as a character.
The points on which people agreed seem to me to say a lot more about how we think in our culture, and therefore I think they actually do apply to how people see Shannon’s character and the readers’ expectations for her.
I can see the appeal to playing along with a child’s fantasy. But there is such a thing as giving in too much. The more Pru and Luann play along the angrier Shannon seems to get. It just seems obvious she is pushing as far as she can hoping to find someone who stands their ground. I think in the end Luann’s mom will be the hero of this story arch.
This is the first time that others have climbed into Shannon’s world with her as opposed to just watching and supervising from a distance (e.g. Brad and Toni). But Pru and Luann aren’t taking orders and in some ways they are poking fun by wearing house cleaning tools and underwear for crown. Shannon will realize that even in her world of imagination she can’t dictate everything.
Maybe she needs boundaries now, maybe later. Depends when dinner is, and if the the two grownups have any other pressing matters to attend to (time allocation). For myself, Shannon is getting a bit annoying and that would be a red flag for me. But then, I’m a little hungry for dinner. I have little patience for narcissists, but cut kids more slack — they are more charming / creative with their self centeredness….. w adults it’s just creepy / toxic. Anyway, I hope P and L are creative & compassionate when they put their foot ( / feet) down.
I suspect we will not see any examples of “discipline” that so many have talked about here the past week or so. Greg’s having too much fun playing Shannon’s “train of thought” actions off of the older characters.
Shannon is behaving and sounding EXACTLY like my granddaughter did from the time she could speak through about age 8. Everything is always her way, her rules, and even when you play the game her way, if she still ends up starting to lose, the rules can change instantaneously. I only went along up to a point. That being said, she is now 13, and we’ve all survived (so far). She is very smart and can be manipulative when she feels it suits her purpose. THAT I have never put up with. I think she has been astounded how smart and aware Grammy can be, at times.

Panel 1: Princess Powerpanties. I can only hope that it was Shannon that came up with that name and not Prudence or Luann.
Panel 2: Shannon believes that bowing should be done with fists raised in the air and saying, “ERRG”. That kind of makes sense.
Panel 3: Someone watched Young Frankenstein before writing the Shannon dialogue
Note: I can only hope that since Puddles is not seen in this one, that he is still alive.
