Dr Fabbi is talking to me too. I am a math illiterate. I truly don’t understand or relate to numbers or concepts. I can only handle basic math such as addition, subtraction, decimals, fractions, percentage, multiplication – the survival skills for daily living and budgeting. I took economics in college as it was a required course and the course focused only on terminology and applications. I got a decent grade – I could handle definitions and their applications – just don’t ask me to explain or diagram or calculate concepts of those applications or give examples. Too complex for me. Thankfully this course did not require that – that was for the advanced economics class which I did not need to take.

I think the friendship between Bets and Tiffany will develop here, and Bets will be a study buddy/aid to Tiffany. It will help Tiffany so much to realize if she applies herself this can be good stuff, and she can do it. The irony (although not that much to me actually) is that Bets has Gunther as her BF. Some are still grieving that Gunther is not a BF with Tiff, or Luann, rather a good FF (friend friend).

When, quite some years ago, I took classes in both Micro and Macro economics. I thought that I might go “straight” and follow my father and older brother by pursuing an MBA. I struggled a bit with the math. It was when the courses went from simple analytics to avenues of social engineering that I said "Fuck this Shit.

I really enjoyed economics while in college.

In Econ 1A, I had a C average on the weekly quizzes going into finals week until I read the chapter/ appendix bringing in basic differential and integral calculus into the mix. I was able to apply my 2 years of engineering calculus into Economics and got one of the top A grades, which gave me an A for the course. If I hadn’t had zero accounting skills, I would have switched my major from geology to Economics.

I hated math, yet slogged on in it for medical study… yet my undergrad degree is in Economics; and, I ended up in Healthcare anyway, so go figure… :-P

Tiffany is a Barbie Girl.

Flunked organic chemistry TWICE! It was all gobbledygook to me.

Never had a prof who warned the class ahead of time that it was going to be that rough.

Wish one of my stats profs had been so generous. Struggled for two weeks before I realized it was a poor fit. Dropped that class, got into a different section, and passed with a B. The best I could have hoped for in the original class (called “Stats for Dreamers”) would have been a C – but most likely a D.

Had a chem prof warning that you will not pass unless you study and work at it everyday and another prof who introduced himself by slamming his books on table and yelling: “If I catch any of you cheating on a test you will be kicked out of my class and I will make sure you will never be able to take this class ever again.” Gee, nice to meet you too.

Give it a chance Tiff! Leave high school behind and give it a chance! The Hubs had to take some pretty stiff math for the tool and die and die design programs and he ended up with all “A” grades.

Are we going to have some character growth? Tiffany doesn’t think she can, Bets convinces her to stay, and she finds out that she can, and she has something more to offer than a curvy body and a pretty face?

This teacher speaks to me.

Definitely understand where Tiffany is coming from but Tiffany, you need to explore and expand. Otherwise you just stagnate and end up feeling worse and worse. You’re already recovering from your first taste of that. Don’t give in.

I think that Dr. Fabbi is a one time drawing and will exit soon. Greg can’t maintain this style and make it fit in with his goggle-eyed Tiffany or Luann.

I love to see how the university has changed Tiffany. She used to believed herself to be the best of all, now she knows and admits her limits. Is sad to see how exaggerating she consider herself incapable. It will surely be difficult, but she’ll can count on the help of Gunther and Bets to learn. They will be a nice group of study buddies. Also, the prof is someone the authors knows? it’s practically a portrait.

The decision to stay or go has lifetime implications for Tiffany; it is all about character and being willing to work through tough situations. In any event, most schools have a week to ten day add-drop period so she can better judge the course. You certainly don’t want to withdraw just because someone says it will be hard. For all we know, Dr. Fabbi hates to grade and getting people to drop the class reduces her workload.

I had professors say stuff like that just to weed out the lazy people. Once they left, he laughed and said, Ok, Now that the dead weight is out of the way. Let’s get an easy A for everyone.. It was classic.

You all seem to miss what Dr. Fabbi is really saying, “In this class, I will teach you how to think and understand your world.”

Microeconomics is usually a lower division(first 2 years) class taken after macroeconomics. If she has problems with these she s out of luck once she starts upper division classes.

I know it’s just a cartoon. but as a university faculty member for 42 years I have to object. While it makes good movies and funny stories, a department chair would tear you a new one for beginning a class like that. Administrators badger us incessantly about the need to retain every student we can.

Saw the same reaction in “Intro to Statistics” class by almost everybody… but they were El Ed majors and had to take it anyway.

My niece has learning disabilities. She would audit a difficult class, then take the course for credit.

Hmmm, it’s Tuesday, minor crisis as Tiffany is “confronted” with her fear factors (math and studying). My beer bet says this opens a door in Tiffany in the end and she finds herself. In finding herself she gains more confidence and goes past being (I’ll let you fill in the blank). The slightly longer range question is where does this lead her in the new year… The short term will be closer with Bets, more confident about herself, and opening doors for herself.

I’m not very mathy, and microeconomics was not that hard.

Come on, Tiff. Micro is more up your alley than macro would ever be. Give it a shot. (Then again, she might be even happier in a consumer econ class….)

Can’t say you weren’t given a fair warning. More profs should kick off the term with that advisement.

Dr Fabbi – laying it all out there and doing it with a smile. Now that’s a teacher. If Tiff hangs in there, it just might work out for her.

My favorite college professor was to the right of William Buckley, so you’d think I wouldn’t like him. But he actually thought college was about learning. He assigned one book per semester, not twelve (but it was an important one). And didn’t much care about marks as long he knew you understood the subject. He was also brutally honest.

God, I despised his politics. He despised mine too, but he didn’t let it affect my mark.

Merciful that the prof puts it out there from Day One. I respect that.

I had a prof that on the first day looked at all the students standing in the back of the lecture hall trying to crash the course, and launched into how hard the class was going to be, the number of quizzes, hours of reading every night, no curve grading. He stopped when there were enough chairs for everyone, then said “OK now that we are down to those who are serious, let’s talk about how the course will really be run.”

Pardon me if someone else asked but is Dr. Fabbi based on a real person?

This should be an interesting week. I do indeed hope that Tiffany stays in this class.

It would be really fun if Tiffany’s efforts in this class were to follow a “Legally Blonde” sort of story projection. Namely, where “ditzy” Tiffany (Reese Witherspoon in “Legally Blonde”) struggles a bit at first…. but then actually does figure out she is a) smart, b) has the ability to do good/impressive things, and c) can still be herself.

I do also like that Bets is in the class as well. It should be nice to see them become more and more friends.

AND at least at this juncture…. it is nice to see the two female characters together and not the triad of the two girls and Gunther. For me, I think it will be more entertaining to see Bets and Tiffany develop their friendship independently and for Bets and Gunther to develop their relationship independently. The “hijinx” situation where Gunther is between two females (Bets and Tiffany, Luann and Tiffany, Rosa and Luann, etc.) has been explored enough in my opinion.

If Tiffany changed her major to business, she cannot avoid taking microeconomics. She can delay taking it to a point, but it is a core business class and prerequisite to other core courses and electives. Better to stay and finish it early in her academic career, especially since she has a friend like Bets who is learning with her and help her study.

Gotta give the teacher points for getting right to the point. But Tiffany needs to remember why she’s taking this course.

Pretty sure Betts is gonna persuade her to stay and help her through the class. Because as a business major wanting to start a fashion company she will need that knowledge.

It’s possible that Tiff barely passed w/ Dr. Fabbi during the summer and now she feels these comments are a warning directed at her.

Ok, it’s a bit uphill. But hey, what ain’t when it comes to things you really want. Take the course anyways and scrape by. You may need that stuff and you’ll always get better over time.

Luann would leave too. I can’t do much math so I’d just like to audit the class.

Over the years, I have “ghosted” a few classes, gleaned what I wanted from them, and failed to show up on test days.

Don’t give up, Tiff! If you’re going into business, you need to know this stuff. It’s scarier than it sounds. (I hope…)

The first day of my Human Anatomy and Physiology class for nursing school, the professor told us quite matter-of-factly: “Study EVERYTHING in the book. I have questions for everything, including the pictures. I teach this way because someday I will be a patient under your care, and I want you to know what you’re doing.” He was true to his word – he asked test questions about the pictures! His class was intense, but I loved it. A few years later, as I was working in a hospital, I saw his name on the patient admission sheet. I sincerely hoped that the nurses taking care of him had been ones he had taught.

If she gives up this easily she is NEVER going to make it in business.

Too bad. I think Tiff should give herself more credit. And how will she run a company without grasping economics?

I’m right with her. I enjoyed all my college classes right up until Economics. It was the worst class I’ve ever taken. I struggled to get a C and tried to take Economics II because I thought I wanted to go into accounting, but dropped it while I could still get a full refund and changed my major. So glad I did. I like math, but that is an altogether different kind of math.
