When you take this comic strip with yesterday’s, you can see that Gunther’s list of 4 things he did not like were all things about Tiffany and Bernice and none of them were about Bets. So her question, “Do you like me?” and the question today, “Did you worry about me?” address it. Bets is making sure she is number one.
I’m going against the grain here. I like Bets. And the reason is in this current story line. She’s normally not the one to bring the drama. Gunther let the other girls drama get in their lives. Bets was ready to let those girls keep it to themselves and get out without it.
Wow. I was really off base. This is no way The Four Musketeers, and Bets no way embraces the motto, “One for all, and all for one”. She’s more like an older version of Shannon. “It’s mine. Stay away from it or I’ll bite you.”
I have to factor in Bets comment 3 days ago (“drama, deceit, double-crossing. Fun night”) with her now being a jealous, ignored girlfriend. Bets has some problems. Maybe Gunther is the one to give her a little moral clarity. She could use it.
We’re coming up on the one year anniversary of when Gunther and Bets first met. (April 1st 2019) And honestly, this thing has gone on long enough.
Gunther should take Bets home and in the politest possible terms, thank her for all the good times he had with her, however brief. But tell her that this is never going to work, and that it would be unfair for him to waste anymore of her time. He should also tell her that you hope she finds a guy that is truly worthy of her. And then bid her a fond farewell.
And when Gunther’s so called “friends” come around and ask him what happened. Politely them it’s none of their business. That includes Ma Berger/Gray.
She has to be the most unlikable character this strip has created. I dunno if that was the point, or some odd choice by the writers, but she’s been horrible in every strip she’s been in.
Well it looks like I might be ready to fall off or be unwillingly pushed off my limb about a break-up possibility with Bets and Gun(ther). I have been thinking it was a morality play, but as one poster pointed out to me maybe I complicated things. I concede maybe. On the other diminishing hand it might just be a girlfriend boyfriend argument, that will only be that, but defining. But I think not. Morality? Never mind. Kudos to the Bets haters.
Yep, still jealous of his female friends. No wonder she dismissed Bernice. She is just another Luann. And I agree with Gunther – you’re now exhibiting quite the drama. All Bet wants is snuggle time from Gunther and nothing else except Snapgram time and the fans. Notice all she ever does with Gunther is wrap around him as if trying to own him. It’s every guy’s dream which I think is why Greg draws those snuggly scenes. All she is interested in is 100% of Gunther’s attention which is why she insists on Gunther posing for her fans – to ensure he is with her, not somewhere else. He got lucky the other day when he ghosted Bets while she was on Snapgram at that Cosplay Convention. Wonder how Bets found him?
is this the beginning of the end? Looks very much like it. But then again, with the way some of these storylines have unfolded over the years, it wouldn’t surprise me to see Bets and Gun make up and love each other more than ever. Let’s see how this one unfolds…
A full blown pandemic and an economic depression are here. The post-teenagers argument is sort of like being in a combat situation and worrying about the flavor of the meal-ready-to-eat dinner. This isn’t entertaining. It’s irrelevant.
As much as I like Bets, she is the one who got involved with this whole Tiff and Bernice drama. She’s the one who went behind Bernice’s back, warned Tiff, and showed Gunther the party.
The first real argument of their relationship.Hope it consolidates their feelings for each other so they can move forward into a good future relationship.
Wow! Petty! Never mind the fact that Bets is basically a self-absorbed Instagram addict who cares more about her own popularity than the fact that her boyfriend isn’t comfortable having their every intimate moment publicized for all to see.
Gun didn’t do himself any favors when he agreed to lie for Tiff and should be just as mad at himself (sohe seems). Will Gun have that conversation with Tiff who created this situation? She was the one who set this in motion. Bets does have a point about him going on about the other two. While Gun may consider Tiff and Bern as “friends”, they never were through high school, Bern was cordial to him but never thought highly of him (conversations with Luann were rarely “positive” about Gun). He started to develop a friendship with Tiff at Mooney. That final talk with Bern about Piro had them both thinking they could have had a relationship that they hadn’t considered before (although Gun had the idea put in his head when he went to see Bernabout it) – the arcs runs in these 3 segments: https://www.gocomics.com/luann/2016/01/29 – https://www.gocomics.com/luann/2016/02/06 , https://www.gocomics.com/luann/2016/03/07 – https://www.gocomics.com/luann/2016/03/24 and https://www.gocomics.com/luann/2016/05/28 – https://www.gocomics.com/luann/2016/06/10 .Now, will this be the start of Bets disappearing from the strip as her role has run its course? I posted the other day that one way things could end up was the breakup of Bets and Gun and Bets be written out (ala Quill). It could be as the Evans may have run out of ideas for her, but the only fly in that ointment is Bets friendship with Tiffany and as long as Tiffany is in the strip, Bets may be as her college sidekick (ala Crystal and then disappear when Tiffany leaves Mooney U.). Tiffany will probably be kept in this strip until the Ann Eiffel situation is resolved – found out to be a con artist or married to daddy Tom. It could last until she gets out of college – either by graduating, dro out or expelled. What will be the future topics. Luann has become a boring character and would require some creativity to revive her as a main character. Maybe have Brad and Toni adopt Shannon, raising her could have a lot of ideas.
Seriously if she isn’t sharing their relationship to their “fans”, she’s all over him when they are together basically to say, “Look at us!!!” An example to that is the couch. Bets really didn’t seem to have any interest in studying.
Sorry Charlie, these two are essentially incompatible. He’s too much of a goody two shoes mama’s boy, and she is an insecure, jealous, controlling attention seeker. Nerdy things are about all these two have in common.
But it is logical and “not wrong” I mean she’s under the pretense of spending an evening with HIM… she didn’t go to the ball to study, she went to be with him.
But he very quickly caved to Bernie’s inability to see him snuggly with a girlThen he gets involved with the Tiffany drama and now that they are alone, they still technically aren’t “alone” because his mind is on those two.
Gunth is learning the first rule of a committed relationship – you’ve got to put your SO ahead of other people because they should be “more important” than friends (that’s not to say he still can’t have friends etc, but he should at least CONSIDER the SO first.)
Bets makes some good arguments. however, I think she is feeling a little insecure about Gunthers relationship with Bern, Tiff, and Luann. I think she is worried Gunther doesn’t care about her the same way he cares about them. on a side note, Gunther does need to butt out of things a little more often when it concerns Bern, Tiff and Luann these 3 tend to want to drop him into it all the time. He needs to tell them. Bugger off.
Since my pessimistic first comment I have had second thoughts about both the argument from Bets perspective, the meaning for Gunther, and the hope for the relationship. I am one who has hope for the relationship because this is the first one, including Rose even, where there is real passion and commitment, even though neither person is at all perfect. Who is, in Luannverse, or in real life? I think Bets has a point about paying attention to her as a girlfriend; that is a commitment, and is Gunther ready to make it? Is he able to move to a complete adult relationship with someone he loves, and not forsake his old friends, but be able to look at them from arms length? I for one hope so, I like Bets, and I want Gunther to find a woman who completes him, even if they battle over this ONE issue. Make-up kissing (I don’t think Greg will do the bedroom scene in the Gulag I have been hoping, but it would be GREAT if he did) can be fantastic. I am hoping for that.
I didn’t read all the comments, so I’m sorry if someone else said this: Am I the only one who’s loving that Bets and Gun are arguing? The only thing is, I’m not sure if I want them to fight and make-up or fight and break-up…
This is the point where they decide whether they have a relationship, or not. Time to clear the air about feelings and expectations. And Gunther must remember that it is hard to argue with a naked woman, or one that you imagine will be soon. Whatever happens, this whole thing should not end on a sour note the way the Luann and Quill romance did. So, get your piano tuned, Greg, these are two good characters.
Jealousy! HOORAY!!! Finally is time for them to discuss about how much Bets is jealous and want to be always the center of Gunther’s attentions. Let’s hope she will understand how immature her behavior is and decide to try to change.
Ah Jeez, why do I even bother? Pincushions and dress forms, here we come again. Gunther is starting to remind me of Uncut Gems: the guy gets one lucky break after another, but he just keeps blowing it.
Fortunately, I’m not trying to win a popularity contest, ’cause this will be unpopular.
Bets has a point.
Bernice immediately interfered with Bets’ preferred couch. Bets even said (Mar. 4) she thought Bernice might be jealous.
Then, Gunther could have just been the slightest bit circumspect about what Tiff told him (going into the hall in the first place is a plot advancement action that will get no explanation), but, instead, he created and fueled drama.
Bets cleaned the situation up and prevented considerably more drama…essentially, resetting the universe to fairly close to where it would have been if Gunther hadn’t stepped into the hall in the first place. Tiffany would have been at the party and Bernice wouldn’t have even looked for it.
And now Gunther is going on about the feelings of women who aren’t his girlfriend, and not letting the situation go.
It doesn’t seem that unreasonable for Bets to wonder about this. Why doesn’t Gunther have any male friends? Why is he contributing to his female friends’ soap opera?
The Bets character seems to be a bit like a Rorschach test for We The Posters. If we think we see control, we see her controlling. If we are amazed by patience, we are amazed by her patience. If we think she’s just having fun with social media, we think she’s just having fun with social media, but if we don’t like social media, we think she’s abusing Gunther’s good nature.
Nick Yamana (can’t find the clip) did Rorschach tests best (Barney Miller).
Psychiatrist: What do you see?
Yamana: An elephant. Wearin’ a hat.
(Psychiatrist turns Rorschach card upside down)
Psychiatrist: And now what do you see?
Yamana: An elephant. Upside down. (pause) Wearin’ a hat.
Well I liked her at first, and had great hopes for this pair. But narcissists are very good actors and rarely show their true colors until you’ve known them long enough for them to dig their claws in. Glad to see Gunther not being cow-towed. Between the jealousy, control-freakism, constant need to show off on social media and all-about-me mentality, sooner to be rid of her the better.
Sheesh. When she was with Gunther at the comic book convention all she did was vlog on her phone and ignore him, except when she needed him to be on screen.
And I didn’t see Bets deciding to not involve herself in all that was happening. She was in it up to her eyebrows.
Bets is absolutely right. Why does he care so much about people who marginally care about him? Bernice is simply an awful person – a control freak really. And Tiffany ain’t anyone’s friend.
Bets is right and she should squeeze him by jumblies if he continues with this nonsense.
I’m confused, why did he need to worry about her? I thought that was a misplaced comment. Did you think how this is effecting me would be more appropriate.
I’m confused about something. When and how did Tiffany and/or Bernice become actual friends with Gunther? I know he says it once in a while, but I cannot remember evidence of it. Same thing between Tiffany and Bernice, come to think of it.
“Until now…” is the snippiest thing a guy’s ever said during an argument since Quill called poor Luann “pissy”. Isn’t it time Bernice came over and snipped at them about how they’re disturbing everyone during her phoney curfew? (I can just see her telling the residents “You’re not allowed to try and finish your homework! It’s 10 pm! Turn out your lights and go to bed!”)
Well, if there’s any doubt that Gunther and Bets haven’t been intimate, in my opinion, this kind of shows that they haven’t been. A lot of guys I know, once that Mark has been passed, they are far more malleable by their significant other… seriously though, this is a bad sign. Bets is asking Gunther to ignore his own ethics. She is far too manipulative as it is, as I see it, but asking your partner to be less of a friend to your friends and change your values, that’s a big red flag. If someone thinks that Gunther’s character is being too strict, I leave this advice for you: anyone who will lie for you might lie TO you.
Gunther is one of those people who needs to fix other people’s problems. Bets is not like that. I have to side with Bets here. Gunther needs to learn that when you’re with someone (I mean as in literally with , as in physically co-located) you’re dating then that someone is your priority. You don’t go haring off to “fix” other people’s problems. This was a Luanne / Tiff / Bernice situation and Gunther had no business getting involved in it.
On another note. I very much dislike how Evans introduced and played up Bets as a possible match for Gunther and now lately has seemingly gone out of his way to make her as unlikable as possible.
This is why Beer is often better than women. You can have multiple beers in the same room together and they won’t fight or get jealous of each other. You can care about another beer and none of them will mind. Gunther needs to get a clue and learn the difference between friends and girlfriend if he wants to have a stable relationship. It is always good to care about friends, but you put your ‘significant other’ above your friends, or you no longer have a ‘significant other’.I think I’ll go have a beer.
Bets tells him to “shut up” when he is expressing distress and feelings. At no time during the evening does she say to him “hey, can we forget about them for a while and just be together?” Instead she bottles it up until it erupts angrily. She is a poor communicator and unsupportive of how her partner feels. Gunther will be happier once he “nexts” her.
A young woman dares to show public affection and it is defined by some who I am starting to feel are quite repressed as her bragging or staking her claim or’crying for attention. Seems a bit disingenuous.
From a certain standpoint is it as if some of you cannot reconcile that a worldly, attractive young woman would see past all his foibles and, moreover SEE his potential, where others have been tolerant, dismissive, openly mocking, 2-faced and basically flawed towards him the entire time they have known him. How can you people not see that?
“You weren’t having any drama” “so you are saying it is ok to take it for granted that I won’t care? I even helped our mutual friend stay out of trouble. But enough is enough!”
Girls that are friends are nice Gun(ther), but a Girlfriend can do things for and to you, young man!!, than a girl that is a friend can ever do for or too you. Just sayin.
NEVER EVER say something like that to a woman who is Black!!! Bets is 100% correct. Don’t invite your woman somewhere and then ignore her. Bets you need to find a guy with a back bone…
I’m going to make a few folks mad, but if I were Gunther, that girl would have to go. It’s not so much what she is trying to tell him….it’s that ugly tone she’s using. When people let their emotions keep them from talking in a civil manner, the other party usually stops listening anyway.
where is Pipe? I miss his thoughtful analyses. He is an academic probably teaching his classes from home (as I am doing). He should be able to be here unless something is wrong.
I feel like this is a good time to point out that all of January 2020, Luann and Bernice were obsessing over Bets and Gun’s intimate life. It got to the point where the former invaded their privacy and starting asking other people for gossip, instead of just acting like a mature adult and asking her friend directly. The gossip spun out of control and turned into rumors, and considering that they reached Gunther’s family, there’s a pretty good chance Bets knows what happened too.
Assuming she does know that, I think she has every reason to distrust Bernice. If not for that by itself, then certainly for the hypocrisy she showed by doing a 180 and acting very repulsed by even mild forms of PDA. Bernice caused way more of a disruption at study hall by loudly confronting them than they did by vaguely cuddling on a couch. And Gunther did sorta just leave Bets in the room with someone so aggressively hostile towards her.
This is also a good time to point out the hypocrisy Bernice has regarding Tiffany and Ann Eiffel. Ann first appeared in 2002 and since then she’s harassed and manipulated many of Bernice’s friends. Bernice herself was a victim of intimate harassment by Ann who, as her boss, tried to coerce her into a relationship by firing her boyfriend. (I can’t remember if Ann’s crush was explicitly stated, but Wikipedia’s got sources on that.)
So what kind of person would coerce Tiffany into staying at the dorms by saying her only other option would be to go live with Ann? Ann, who’s implied to be an abusive stepmother* to Tiffany? Ann, who also abused the person now using her name to manipulate someone? (November 1 2019)
Reminder that Bernice seems to want work in the psychology field. She may very well have clients like Tiffany in the future, and this is how she treats them. Between this and the way she’s treated Bets and Gunther, Bernice has become exactly the kind of bully she used to despise. And one day she’s gonna be a bully with a PhD. (continued)
( * Stepmother is a strong word to describe Tiffany’s dad’s live-in girlfriend. But their interactions have been painful enough that the mere mention of her name is reason enough for her to skip out on holiday reunions she was looking forward to. January 24 2018 and November 28 2019 have insight.)
As a sidenote, it shouldn’t be forgotten that Gunther’s skimming way more money than he should be from Tiffany than he should be (October 12 2019, I can’t remember when the deal was first struck). It should also be noted she’s gone hungry at least once because of a lack of money: November 29 2019.
TLDR: EVERYONE in this group of friends is a horrible person, and the only way for Bets to fit into their circle is continuing this character assassination on her. So… if that’s actually the writer’s intention then they’re doing a pretty good job of making her look like the bad guy? Good work?
Gunth blowing it. Classic “it’s either your friends or your girlfriend” dilemma; as we watched Bernice constantly interrupt them.Said it before and will say it again; got to let your friends live their lives and make their own mistakes. And yeah, Bets PDA and social media is annoying but still worth the benefits.
There’s not enough time in a day to list the reasons Bets is being a whiny little girl. No guy should be expected to devote 24/7 to her and her alone, forsaking friends, family or whatever else she’s jealous of. There’s life going on beyond the couch where they make out. What if he had a job? Would she call every 10 minutes to see if he was thinking about her? Check the mileage on the car odometer to be sure he didn’t go anywhere buy work and home? If a guy did that he’d be called a psycho and get kicked to the curb.
What is fascinating to me about all these posts is that there seems to be no middle ground at all. One faction thinks Bets is a narcissistic, self-absorbed and manipulative controller who is not good enough for Gunther and uses him as a prop to attract her fans. The other posters think Gunther is so obsessed with either his old friends or the lies they expect him to tell that he is ignoring the best thing that ever happened to him.
I suspect the truth is somewhere in the middle. Both of these characters have plenty of flaws; I, for one, would have trouble sticking with someone who angrily told me to ‘shut up’, but I would also find it difficult to stay with someone who obsesses over lies.
Oh, and for those who think Gunther has no friends who are male, what about Ox?
“get over it’ she says. Gunther doesn’t have anything to get over; but Bets does. He has been very adapting and flexible throughout the relationship. Bets is possessive and jealous; likely she doesn’t have the strong base of friends to fall back on; Gunther may be all she does have.
If “Trilogy” and “Purple People Eater” want to fight constantly, go to a gym, put on the gloves and duke it out…away from the rest of us. Most of us are tired of your continual bickering.

(continued)
tsunamiracle over 4 years ago
Good work?
ndblackirish97 over 4 years ago
Gunth blowing it.
