John Mitzewich of YouTube’s “Food Wishes” — who likes to add cayenne to most of his recipes — would be appalled by that much cayenne Luann’s accidentally putting in.
Puddles was sniffing the delicious stew (note the bracket above the nose) and then the bracket disappeared in the 3rd panel. Puddles said he was no longer interested in the stew.
You should’ve just tried making a stew, instead of…whatever the heck _ this_ stuff is supposed to be. You know, like stew meat, potatoes, and carrots? Instead of filet mignon and seven herbs and spices?
Cayenne pepper isn’t that hot. Its only 30,000 to 50,000 Scoville Units. Now if you want hot, try the Carolina Reaper from the Puckerbutt Pepper Co. at 2,200,000 Scoville Units (currently verified by Guinness as the hottest, but the Dragons Breath – 2,483,584 Scoville Units hasn’t been verified yet by Guinness nor Pepper X – 3,180,000 Scoville Units). Even the habañero, used in many hot sauces, is not that hot, only 100,000-350,000 on the Scoville scale. Those Tien Tsin peppers (little red peppers used in Chinese food) are only 50,000-75,000 Scoville Units.
Ah the modus operandi, sweet, doofus Luann’s savior Jack. This is not the same thing totally but it does remind me of how Brad and Toni got together. He rescued her from Dirk, nearly risking their lives, but they got together because while he was being doofus he was stealing Toni’s heart, and you all know how that ended up.
That’s a mighty small pot of stew for $65 and so many ingredients. And she expects to feed Jack with it, too? Good thing she put so much cayenne in it — it will certainly encourage portion control.
I don’t know if that much Cayenne Pepper can be fixed, but adding rice and turning it into a rice dish can cut it by a lot, and even (possibly) make it particularly good. Butter helps, too.
But that pot is for three people? They spent $63 on one medium pot of food?
And once again our fair lass looks more like Miss Takeout. But it’s probably just a setup for tomorrow’s; a) panic meal prep school or b) Jack coming to the rescue somehow once again!
How many times is Jack going to have to be a White Knight before Luann gives him a chance? Ask GnK.
I’m doing something different this summer. I’m growing my own cyenne peppers (as well as habaneros, jalapeño and Anaheim). I’ll be able to use fresh cyenne peppers to spice up my meals.
Nice, Luann’s taken E-Z stew and added a little Texas flavoring to it making it chili (another version of stew). I might add a few beans (the traditional side of me) but then if it was me I’d add buffalo or elk burger to it and if I’d planned it rabbit instead (btw, all are delicious).
That will teach her to make a stew with kefir! Kefir is mostly used cold, and if it can indeed be used for some cream soups, boiling it isn’t its primary use and it could give a sour taste. There are so many other ways to make beef stew!
Back when I was first married I was at work and my wife was home cooking a stew for dinner. I had a bag of crushed chilis in the cupboard because I would add a few to a plate of spaghetti to add a little heat as I enjoy spicy food. There was close to half a cup in the bag. She didn’t know what it was. She put the entire bag in the stew. We were struggling and couldn’t afford to throw the stew out and it was too hot for her to eat, heck it was too hot for me to eat if I was sane, but money didn’t grow on trees so I ate it for three days as it had been intended for a couple meals for both of us. My wife had soup or something else, but I sweated through eating that stew. It brought out the sweat on my forehead, and burned my mouth as I ate it, and burned twice as much coming out the other end.
Luann chose this recipe, you would think, because she could anticipate how it would taste, i.e. she knows the ingredients. I’m sure she doesn’t. e.g. the yogurt (kefir), a live food, should be stirred in at the very end. and If she bought a flavored kefir (e.g. vanilla) by mistake (I could see her doing it) that would definitely make it taste weird.
I used to add a little tabasco sauce to my chili for flavor. Once someone unscrewed the top and left it that way, so it all came out in a GLOP. I had already paid my $1 so I had to eat it to get my money’s worth. After that, I usually put in about that much. Tears of joy went running down my face each time. (That was the cause of the tears, wasn’t it?)
Sometimes I like to chew peppers for snacks. Not sure they will like it, though. Different strokes for different folks and all that.
Scoop out the meat and veggies and redo the broth. The pepper hasn’t been in there long enough to affect the meat or veggies. You could probably even use a fine mesh strainer to get most of the pepper out of the broth if you are using cayenne pepper flakes and not cayenne powder. Since the pepper flakes are dried they haven’t been in the broth long enough to affect the flavor too much. You just have to work fast.
Okay, now that I’ve read everyone’s posts, I have something to say:
What with all the solutions everyone’s offered to solve Luann’s mishap with the cayenne pepper, I will predict that between today’s last panel and tomorrow’s first panel, the problem will have been completely rectified.
You know, with all this talk about “beef stew recipe”, I decided I wanted to make it! Yesterday I did a Trader Joe’s run and got some red wine, beef bone broth and sourdough bread. They didn’t have the el-cheapo cuts of beef, so I went to the Asian market and got a pound and a half of “beef round shank” because it was the cheapest stuff they had aside from ground beef.
The rest was stuff sitting around in the pantry. Tiny potatoes that wouldn’t last too much longer. Baby carrot sticks that I bought last month. Celery almost on its last laps. 3/4 of an onion in the fridge. Whatever seasonings are on-hand. Beef brat from last month’s grocery run. Don’t have any thyme, so I substituted fresh rosemary from the bush in the back yard. No leeks, so green onions on top will do. Don’t have any kefir, so should I use a bit of brie or cream cheese on top when I’m ready to serve?
