I suspect Tom will say something like, “This is Leslie’s ultrasound and it looks exactly like the one Ann showed me? You know what this means? I am finally going to have a son!!!”
Well if there’s any “good” news here today, it seems that Les has finally “woken up.”And he’s right. Ann’s Fake Souffle scam SHOULD have landed her in prison. But it didn’t. Why? Because:
1) Les and Tiffany didn’t contact the police, immediately upon discovery.
2) Les and Tiffany apparently didn’t hang on to the fake lingerie as “evidence.” (Or DID they?)
3) Tiffany didn’t inform Simone of Ann’s scam, in order for Simone take appropriate action.
If any of the above had happened, Ann would be behind bars sporting a Prada prison suit.
At any rate, “Big Bro” Les might want to tread lightly here if Ann goes to court over the Souffle stuff. A good defense attorney for Ann would point out that Les also benefited financially from Ann’s scams. Plus Les SOLD Ann that Costumer list (Evidence) and profited from it through blackmail.
Tiff’s right. Start slow. And concentrate on the sonogram only. Least Les and Ann wind up sharing adjoining cells. ;)
Here’s a thought: perhaps Tom isn’t too worried about Tiffany because he set up a trust fund for her that he never got around to telling Tiff about. He wanted Tiff to take responsibility for her future. On the other hand, let us say Tiffany currently has something like a 95% vested interest in his fortune. Tom never bothered to tell Ann about this because Ann kept telling Tom she loved him and not his money.
Doesn’t Les look squeezed out in that last panel? Maybe the point is—Tiffany and Les should plan ahead better than G&K did. (I think G&K did it on purpose.)
Wouldn’t it be nice if everything bow tied so easily on that note? Tiff knows full well she’s not dealing with just some ordinary snake. Plus she doesn’t want to hurt her dad in spite of Ann. Her dad is so blinded, she maybe cautious since her last altercation involving Ann and her dad since he supported Ann at that time.
OK, Les, let’s put some square wheels on this and approach it a bit slower, otherwise you and Tiff will be the ones spinning out in a curve while Evil Annie crosses the finish line safely.
.
Nothing like showing up at the bass derby in an aircraft carrier.
My guess is that Tiff and Les will not get the better of Ann by showing Les’s ultrasound to Tom. Either they’ll never show it to him at all or Ann will have a cover story (e.g., that it’s not Les’s ultrasound but a copy Tiff made of the one she found) and Tom won’t press Ann for proof.
I offer two reasons for guessing that we’ll have to wait longer for Ann’s comeuppance:
(1) Once Ann is gone, I expect Tiffany’s relationship with her father to improve. Before that happens, I think G&K will want to show Tiff maturing to the point where she won’t promptly revert to her pampered princess high school persona.
(2) Chekhov’s empty room at the DeGroot’s hasn’t fired yet.
Perhaps I’m wrong. It wouldn’t be the first time. But I think my reasoning is at least plausible.
One thing’s for certain: If Ann avoids getting caught out this time, we’re sure to see comments here complaining about how agonizingly long this story line is being drawn out. On the other hand, if (contrary to my guess) Tiff and Les quickly convince Tom to give Ann the boot, we’re sure to see comments complaining about how it was too easy and predictable, and what a fizzle of an ending it was after all the build-up.
I suspect Tiff has a sneaking suspicion that her dad won’t believe her or will forgive Ann anyway. That Ann would come up with a perfect explanation for the ultrasound snafu. That she has to plan perfectly to outwit her. And that she is now thinking what that perfect plan might be.
Panel #3. Get your hand off of him, Tiffany. Don’t forget you’re still in his sleazy bedroom and the negative chemistry is reaching a painful level. Then to protect Tom and his feelings, the both of you should confront Ann with all of your evidence and threaten to blow her out of the water if she tries to con Tiff’s love sick daddy. Ann can still keep her meal ticket, and the unknowing Tom can continue to enjoy whatever.
I predict Tiffany will invite Ann and Dad to dinner and have Dad leave the table for a little “girl talk”. Tiff will tell Ann that if she truly cares about Dad, she needs to confess about the baby and her past (e.g. the lingerie, mistreating Tiff) to clean the slate so she doesn’t have to lie anymore because her Dad actually loves them both and Tiff wants Dad happy. Dad will forgive Ann because, much to Ann’s surprise, he loves her. The truth will out eventually, and continuing to lie about the baby will fracture the family. In exchange, Tiffany will forgive her and accept her into the family. After Ann confesses, there’ll be a candid shot of Tiff destroying a recording of their conversation she had kept as secret insurance.
None of that will happen now—Les jinxed it. We’re stuck with Ann and her brain-dead future husband. Daddy-O actually makes less sense to me than Ann. I think they should’ve at least tried to develop this character.
Ann might be a step ahead of them, already telling Tom she has bad news and bursts into tears about the miscarriage. The ultrasound Tom has mysteriously disappeared after Tom drank 6 double top shelf scotches to celebrate the baby! This Eiffel is diabolical, I suspect Tiff is gonna have to be like a chess master to get a move or 2 against the evil one and lets be honest, Les and Tiff are not up for the task. Time for Uncle Al!
“And the Luann strip will suddenly come to an unexpected conclusion! I’ll start a spin-off series based on my character— Don’t Mess With Les— and it’ll be bigger than any comic ever!”
Dumb and Dumber, they can’t understand that Ann is always two steps ahead of her and Tiffany will loose any relationship she has with her dadIt’s none of their business
G&K will make sure that Ann gets away with the scam (again) and she’ll somehow turn this on Tiffany and Les. Tom, being the ignoramus he is will listen with his member instead of his head. I’m starting to think the Evans’s and Batiuk are related somehow.
Les is totally like a lot of the commentators here! But I think/hope Ann will find a way to save herself. Maybe she’s really pregnant, maybe Tom doesn’t care, maybe Tiffany will decide not to do anything for let her father be happy.
Honestly, Tiffany needs to just move on. Her father has abandoned her for a new chippie and new life. She needs to come to terms with it, figure out how she’s going to finish school on her own, and move along with her own life. Ann Eiffel is evil and she’ll destroy Tom eventually. That’s sad, true. But Tom has cashed in filial love and duty, in favor of his “do-over” fantasy with Ann. So be it. Honestly, if Tiff stopped being such a snotty B and reached out to Lu and the rest of the gang, she’d have the support system she’ll need to make it fine.
Don’t count on it, Les. Tom has been brainwashed beyond all repair and he won’t even care. Heck! Your stupid mom could convince him to disown Tiffany and he wouldn’t care (not that he cared before).
The plot thickens, will Tom man up or will he allow Ann to keep dominating him? Is Tom really that stupid to want to be with a woman like Ann? Just asking
Les; listen to Tiffany’s note of caution. You mentioned the lingerie scam. You and Tiffany thought you had her there, didn’t work. DO step back, analyze, plan, analyze again, then plan again, until you two are absolutely positively, 100% sure there is no possible way for Ann to wiggle her way out your denouement this time.
there’s a simpler answer…“Kill her with kindness” Turn it around, Tiff should sound very “interested” in the child and start pushing her dad to be involved… insist that he should be driving her to her appointments, lamaze (spelling?) classes, couples baby-yoga… suggest every manner of him getting up in ann’s business… If she’s wrong, well then at least she’s certain daddy’s invested in the baby but if Tiff is right, then Ann is going to have a hard time keeping up her lie.
Sonogram prints have some metadata… mother’s name, date, and other information. That would be hard to fake as a casual forgery. Plus, they fade over time.
Interesting growth patterns in Tiff. She’s emotionally invested but capable of stepping back to think out a more measured approach, the "…if this… then that…’’. She has close hands-on experience with Ann and knows her ways much better now. It has to be a game of chess.
Here’s hoping they go back for a second ultrasound and come up empty and Tom dumps Ann like the trash she is. Won’t happen because Tom’s an idiot and will fall for the next lie she’ll come up with, but one can hope.
They will never have Ann get busted, she has been given a major role as a villain. Without her, what would they have? Just Luann in her messy bedroom with Bernice. Since they’ve already ventured into these very adult themes they might as well have those two share a kiss. Bernice has obviously been stuck on Luann for years.
I wonder if Les will ask Tiffany – what happened to your mom? He seems like the most logical person to ask her. Or maybe Nancy -when they are at the Fuse talking?
I commented first on Arcamax and am commenting here rather late, and trying to recover responses is a little more difficult there than here, but anyway my thoughts on these panels is that going big, as Les suggests, is not likely the way the denouncement, if there is to be one (up in the air) of Ann will go. I think it is more likely that some version of what Tiffany wants, and Les will agree with, will be the way the Ann/Tom situation will go, but I am of the mind that Tom will forgive her anyway. But there are so many ways this can go, so stay tuned.
I like Luann and Jack and especially Tara and Bet and Puddles. Of all the things I don’t like about this strip, top of my list is that Gunther and Les button the top button of their shirts. But Tiffany is a close second.
I’m sure Les knows about scams Ann has pulled that are far worse than the lingerie scam.
And honestly, faking a pregnancy is a pretty stupid scam. All Tiffany has to do is ask Ann for the name of her obstetrician and where she had the ultrasound done. Or she could just tell Ann she doesn’t believe Ann is pregnant and hand her a home pregnancy test and ask her to prove it, in front of Tom. Have the ultrasound on hand to show why she’s skeptical.
And Ann can’t “lose” the baby in any plausible way because a miscarriage when she’s as far along as she’s supposed to be would involve lots of blood and a hospital visit.
I think Tiffany is going to hold off on doing anything so she can just see how this unfolds, since her father’s happy and Ann might eventually slip up and out herself.
None of Les’s charges would likely bring him any money. Les & Tif are both over 18 and no one is obliged to support them. Les’s plan is all about revenge. These two badly need to spin their marbles on how to have a better life.
Tiffany is right, of course. But she is too timid in dealing with Ann. Leslie is way ahead of reality in his forecast, of course. But at least he wants to take action.
Maybe a considered blend of the two approaches will lead to Ann’s downfall, but I am skeptical. Greg and Karen enjoy the villainy of Ann Eiffel too much!
Not a lot of sense between these two thus far. I do not know if it is from a lack of coffee, or not having a pipe, or just that I got up on the wrong side of the bed today, but right now….
1. I will be feeling aggravated if this turns into some sort of “humorous” sit-com-esque style hi-jinks to have this duo “out” Ann’s false pregnancy…. especially if it takes a few weeks to unfold from this point.
2. Right now, I would prefer them to take the straight arrow trajectory… and simply go and talk to Tom (or Tom and Ann) and show them their findings and then just leave for a while. It ultimately will be Tom’s decision on how to proceed… and his track record is poor.
But, maybe tomorrow will have Greg write for us a twist in this story-line that will make this week’s set of panels more interesting and enticing and thought provoking. I will hope for this to be so… but I suspect it is only a pipe dream.
EUREKA! I think I’ve got it! On Feb. 16, 2018, Ann made an offhand joke about being divorced. The solution to this story may be the supposedly divorced, but actually not, husband showing up! This would allow Tiffany to defer her knowledge about Ann’s “baby” to spare her father’s feelings. Then, when the scam has been uncovered by someone else, Tiff relates her knowledge aforehand. This leads to a huge father-daughter reconciliation. Ta Da!
Yes! Can you see Tom lying in bed snuggled up to Ann saying, “Oh darling, I’m so excited about our baby! I love you so much!. And then find out it’s a fake. That is devastating! No way he’d get over that!!
It is next to impossible to convince a guy that he is making a mistake marrying someone. I had a friend who was getting married to someone who was kinda evil like Ann. In his group of friends, our fondest wish was that he would realize and break up with her. His family hated her, his friends…it seemed like everyone hated her. When he got engaged after a year of dating, we held the equivalent of an intervention. We thought it might blow up in our faces, but we didn’t know what else to do. It resulted in him breaking up with us and still getting married to her. His marriage ended after 2 years. We (the group of friends) met with him after the divorce for the first time in years and the first thing he said was, “why didn’t I listen to you guys?”
A few years later a friend of mine got married to someone who he was not compatible with (though she wasn’t evil) and I said nothing and was a supportive friend. My previous experience made me gun shy about trying to interfere. After his divorce proceedings started a few years later, one of the first things he said to me was, “why didn’t you ever say anything to me about how bad a match we were?”
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE end this Ann Eiffel nightmare. PLEASE, let a skeemer, liar, opportunist, low life get what’s due them. Give Tiffany a break. Maybe Uncle Al can get rid of Ann if Tiffany and Les go to him!!
Les got out of jail as soon as Ann and the judge arranged for Les to pay back the $5,000 he stole (which Les eventually didn’t have to do). Now Les wants his mother up for 25 years. Maybe Tiffany can soften him up a bit. They only have each other at this point.
Finally, finally, finally the strip is admitting the obvious, namely that Ann’s lingerie fraud wasn’t simply a mean trick, it was in fact a felony. There is no excuse for her having been allowed to escape criminal prosecution. You know who should have reported it to the cops? The strip’s eponymous character, Luann. After all, the crime scene is a facility that her family owns!!! The DeGroots ought to have been proactive and established their innocence in the scheme by picking up the phone and telling the police that they were duped and they have learned that a fraud was conducted on their property. Even if Luann doesn’t care about that, shouldn’t she have some concern for the over 100 other women who were swindled out of hundreds of dollars each? Apparently not, because as soon as Ann confessed that it was a scam and refunded the money to Tiff, Luann, and Des. then that was the end of it. Luann got her money back, so she had no further interest in all the other people who didn’t. Ann avoids the long prison sentence that she deserves, because no one ever bothered to report the crime.
Ann’s last resort and back up plan (when she is cornered) is to burst into tears in front of Tom because he is a softy and will succomb (as he has in the past). Ann weaseled out of the lingerie debacle (at the point where Les gave Tiff the guest list) by rushing home and bursting into tears to Tom about how Tiff was being so mean to her. She did so before Tiff could get on the phone and call her dad.
Tiffs “Opposition” button has been pressed. If Les loves the idea, she knows it has to be dumb. .On the plus side, she’s not considering showing it to Ann first. Hope she gets advice from het new friend, Nancy the Bartender.
Ann is a damaged person, I would like to see the story get to the bottom of what happened to her and see her get better. Having her as a 2-dimensional villain is not as interesting.

So Tiffany is the smart one in this duo?
You just can’t win in these situations.

Ann is a damaged person, I would like to see the story get to the bottom of what happened to her and see her get better. Having her as a 2-dimensional villain is not as interesting.
