Why would Bernice think that Luann was paying for her room? Luann doesn’t work, she goes to school like Bernice. Parents generally don;t ask their kids to pay rent.
Way to go Bernice! Just start off by drawing positive parallels between u and our resident 13-yr old and follow up by keeping the room neat. You’ll be golden!
well at least she had a good laugh, why do i have a feeling they are just gonna fall in love with Bernice with all the stuff she’s helping around and than Luann is gonna be getting Jealous cause they give her more attention than Bernice even though she’s suppose to be like someone said 20 years old or does anyone think i’m wrong?
When I point out that Luann lives off her parents while failing to do her share of chores, I get called a Luann-hater. So I guess we should soon see a lot of vitriol directed towards Nancy from my fellow commenters.
I guess I was lucky. When I was living at home while a full time student and working part time to pay my tuition, I paid for transportation to classes and job, but my parents didn’t ask for rent money, or make me pay for my food. So I guess that means I was an ‘underachiever’, as defined by @Rhett and Scarlet….
Gee. I wonder how Bern expected to “pay her fair share,” of room costs, if she doesn’t even have a “for real” job? I guess We just have to add that to the ever growing lists of mysteries that have shrouded this Strip of late. Or could it be that Bernice may be getting a “for real” job soon at the Fuse? Now that Tiff’s a daddy’s girl again, she might not need a job. Or maybe Bern will work with Luann at Kidz Frits? Nah. Can’t see Bernice around kids. EVER.
Hey Nancy? Tell Bernice to forget about paying, as long as she agrees to keep HER room clean.
Your ability to harangue Luann with a daily: Luann!!! Why can’t you keep YOUR room Clean like Bernice?!!? Should be worth it’s weight in gold. ;)
Dysfunctional kid? Lazy, no ambition? A slob? Doesn’t contribute or do any work around the house? Watch Dr. Phil; without fail, its always the parents fault. Its obvious Frank and Nancy never intend for Luann to grow into an adult, or to expect anything from Luann which would require an effort on Luann’s part. Sooo, since Luann is in obvious need of adult role model, let it be Bernice; not the best choice perhaps, but maybe the only choice. No one else in that house is gonna try.
It was accidental that Brad became a responsible adult. Otherwise, he would be working on his car like my 50 year neighbor’s son still do since high school. Sometimes, children don’t leave the nest.
My parents used to charge me 20% of weekly gross income as ‘parent tax’ for living with them while I was saving up a deposit to buy my own place. This was back in the 90s.
It’s unfair to Luann, given the life situation described in the strip to characterize Luann as a lazy good for nothing, as compared to Bernice. Bernice is determined to complete her education all the way to the Master’s level at least if she wants to achieve her goal of clinical psychologist, and likely needs to think doctorate, a 4 to 6 or more year marathon. And she will. Luann is living at home, and decided to take the cheaper option of community college, while trying to decide on a 4 year assumedly, which ordinarily requires a Bachelor’s if she wants to be an early childhood teacher, although a Master’s is desirable. Maybe she was not EXPECTED to contribute rent, so Bernice’s offer to help might be misconstrued, and puts Luann in an awkward position, which Bernice realizes. That is good because Bernice is a bit slow on empathy, but she has it, particularly for Luann, contrary to some Bernice haters around here. I think Nancy was not necessarily construing Bernice’s comment to mean money anyway. It will come out, but this is just the kind of pressure I think this situation puts Luann in, and could conceivably strain the friendship, depending on how GnK play this. But, in honor of John Lewis, sometimes “good trouble” is a good thing, so maybe this will help Luann and Bernice be even stronger friends.
Has Luann completed her two years at Community College? Unless she planning to transfer to a 4 year university, she can graduated from Pitts college with a degree in General Education. She can get a job at the Fuze as a college graduate. Or get a job with Frank’s workplace.
Nancy, praisingly, in Luann’s presence: “Oh, Bernice, you’re the responsible daughter we’ve always wanted!!!” FIVE YEARS LATER: Nancy, seethingly, to Frank, “When is that freeloader ever going to leave???”
It must be so nice to live with such a cheerful family, always ready to laugh and joke. Luann seems so happy to have Bernice as a room neighbor♡.I wonder if they will talk through the wall before falling asleep, like Luann used to do with Brad as a young girl? I hope this will be a happy coexistence ♡.
Bernice did the right thing. Offer to pay for the room, or some other polite way to compensate Nancy and Frank for their generosity. I suspect Bernice will not only keep her room clean but a good part of DeGroot household, much to the chagrin Luann.
Someone has been harping about Luann needing “adversity.” I think it just walked thru door.
Of all the misfortunes that could have befallen Bern this seems pretty contrived. She loses her room at Mooney and her room at home at the same time. Also suspiciously, Bern’s wounded warrior brother, whom she’s barely met in 2008 appears in the strip… with history!
Remember that January thru February 2008 Luann and Brother Ben had quite the flirtatious interlude with Bernice doing a slow burn about it. It’s interesting that Lu and Bern are being thrown together again with an old “Ben of Contention” in the mix.
As soon as Ben gets another job and moves out of his parents house…Bernice will be moving out. Just enough time for the two girls to have a LITTLE FUN together. (hope not dramatic)
Might be good for Luann to have a responsible person around to compete with. Everyone should be loving Bernice real soon as she helps out, cleans up and pretty much makes Luann look like a turd.
I was expected to pay a token amount while I was in school in the late 70’s/early 80’s, more when I was working full-time. I also expected my adult kids to pay if they were living at home and not working in their education.
I foresee an interlude of strife between Luann and Bernice. It will center around Frank and Nancy’s response to Bernice acting as the perfect house guest as opposed to Luann’s more slovenly behaviors.
Then, if Ben returns sans wife, I see a rekindling of the mutual infatuation between Ben and Luann displayed in 2007-8. At one point Ben was portrayed as being somewhat older than Luann, but the same age difference as Frank and Nancy.
Infatuation with a divorced/widowed man with children is the kind of raw meat this strip has drifted into nowadays. Tom and Ann’s supposed unwed pregnancy. Gunther and Bets’ conjugal proclivities.
I’m still a bit confused about how Bernice’s parents would just essentially kick her out. I have a friend who ran into essentially the same situation as this and they managed, even if it meant her “bedroom” was the living room and she slept on the couch. Nobody seemed to mind and the family was able to stay together.
For heaven’s sake, Nancy, let Bernice give you whatever she feels comfortable with. Your utility bills are going to increase and you’re going to need the money.
Not Luanns fault, at least totally. Her parents have raised her to be dependent on them. They should have sat down with her and made some conditions, Now that you’re 28 and an adult, Dear.
Prior commenter correct, Bern will display how her parents raised her to be responsible.
Bernice was obviously paying some rent at home, because she assumes Luann is paying rent. I hope Ben is paying rent for the 2 bedrooms his family is using at Bernice’s house.
Messy individuals are faster decision makers and can better deal with stressful situations. They are less concerned with details. They are more adventurous and fast moving than organized people. Albert Einstein was a messy person. His desk was always full of seemingly disorganized papers, articles, and scrawls, yet no one could challenge his logic. While he managed things in his own seemingly messy way, he was always able to find everything he needed.
1) Bernice should have had enough psych training not to assume. Always ask obvious questions. Moony U is not impressing me. 2) I thought Gunther was paying rent? Les is. 3) Maybe some of this hostility at Luann is an attempt to level the playing field as we’ve watched Tiff struggle financially for months now while Luann’s coasted? If I was Tiff, I wouldn’t be super impressed with Luann at this point either. They both have jobs, but I can’t imagine Kids First pays more than the Fuse.
It’s G&K’s fault really. They have exactly two story lines?——jokes?——-whatever you want to call them for Luann.
1.) Luann is a ditzy, air-headed, boy- crazy teen age girl! Watch her chase guys and fail! HA HA! How funny!
2.) Luann is a sloppy, messy, lazy teen age girl! Look at her room! HA HA! How funny!
G&K don’t seem to realize it REALLY ISN’T FUNNY, not anymore, and hasn’t been for a long time. They can’t seem to bring themselves to let Luann act her age, and not keep her at 13 to 14 year old level.
So now they’re bringing in Bernice to force Luann to grow up a little? Luann should have outgrown a lot of that behavior on her own a loooooooong time ago, IMO.
Well, well…maybe this will wake Luann up. Luann, if I recall, IS working, at least part time. She should be contributing to the household. Maybe this will be the little boot in the backside she needs to realize she needs to start acting like an adult. So, good. I like where this is going.
Luann reminds me these kids who go to college and live rent free at there parents house. Then one of the parents usually loves that the child/adult is still at home.
Nancy is doing Bernice a big disfavor, at least in terms of Bernice’s own development of responsibility. Bernice should be required to contribute as much as Pru did, which, if I rememeber correctly, was not very much. Will Bernice be taking meals at the house? Doing laundry? Using toilet paper?
Looking for references to Bernice’s parent(s). I guess it’s TBD about them, her house and what, if any, family situation caused her to be so serious and responsible. Other original characters seem to have a backstory. Or will she remain a mystery. ;-o
It still sounds pretty bad… as I had said last week… that Ben & kids had usurped Bernice’s place in her own family home. Yet Ben didn’t live there or grow up there, and all-of-a-sudden, housing him & kids had a higher priority than providing a roof for Bernice.
There is no mention that she refused the couch, or tried to negotiate her room back, or she didn’t want to share the bathroom with 5 other people, etc. She called Luann in a panic saying “I’m homeless” and it sure sounds to me that she got a sudden ultimatum. Something that was not her own choice.
And no, despite what some speculation said (wrong!) that she was in a panic and over-reacting to the termination of her RA postition and didn’t talk to her folks yet (wrong!), it looks like Bernice is moving in with the DeGroots fer reals.
It’s quite obvious that her folks now know that she’s moving out and the reasons, and they’re fine with that. “All for Ben, NONE for you!”
I will re-iterate that this reflects quite badly on the Halpers.
Sweet deal: Luann is living rent free , at no cost to Luann, Community College classes, a car that she drives, a cellphone and not required to make any contributions to the household (food and utilities) expenses. She does have a job that covers minor expenses and trips to the veterinarian. Her pipe dream is finding a boyfriend who will put her on a pedestal and be devoted to her reality over his reality. She believes that her Daddy is devoted to her Mother, unconditionally.
I think Frank should have been included about Bern not paying rent. I don’t think it will end well with Bern and Lu living together as they while are great friends, they are not really compatible as room-mates. I wonder if Tiff will be the next RA so that Kip and the rest of the crew can still come in from time to time.
My family was poor when i was growing up. Starting at about age 8 my parents couldn’t make the mortgage payment occasionally so they would get me to cash in the savings bonds i got from my grandmother for Christmas in order to keep a roof over our heads. When i started working at age 10 I gave my parents about half my income every week to help with the bills, as well as providing free labour on the farm, the abattoir, and the farm market stall. I know many people have lives like Luann where they don’t face responsibility from an early age, but by college age she should be paying something towards her living expenses. Her parents are doing her no favours by sheltering her from the realities of the world.
I don’t get why Nancy said don’t worry about it, I’m working now. I thought she took a job because they lost the rent from the room when Pru moved out.
Loving this. Luann is kind of Lazy when it comes to chores around the home. Her bedroom is a mess like a lot of teenagers her age. Her mom is hilarious. Lol

Recently Nancy is stepping out and expressing herself. This will make some arcs more interesting.

I don’t get why Nancy said don’t worry about it, I’m working now. I thought she took a job because they lost the rent from the room when Pru moved out.

And so it begins….
At least Nancy has a good laugh about it.

I believe Luann bought the items to make that soup or what ever …that she added to much spice. Then she bought the pizza for them to eat.

Loving this. Luann is kind of Lazy when it comes to chores around the home. Her bedroom is a mess like a lot of teenagers her age. Her mom is hilarious. Lol
