Help her! That vintage nylon scarf is too tight to let her breathe! (Last I saw a scarf worn that way, it was on the show “Hannibal” and a girl wore it to hide a terrible scar around her neck.)
Hey, Goldfish die. Did Bernice forget to feed it, feed it too much, neglect to put in an air pump (don’t see a pump,, what’s up with that Jack?) or just about to die of old age? In any case let Monstro go to that big fish tank in the sky and see if Jack cares enough to comfort Bernice in her hour of need. Could get interesting. Or not.
Bernice, drop the act. It is not a good look. Jack is looking at your odd act. He is suspicious. If you keep up, he will know you’re putting on an act to get his attention and that this is not about Monstro. He came for Monstro, not you. Stop being self-centered. Step aside and let Jack help poor Monstro.
Bernice is totally confused. Her beloved goldfish is feeling bad and the guy she likes is close to her. I love when control freaks find themselves in a situation where they have absolutely no control and need to be emotional. And Luann left them alone♡♡♡. The last panel is so much fun. Bernice is panicking and Jack is so calm ♡. He probably has already figured out what the problem is. Go Jack, SAVE MONSTRO!
Jack doesn’t seem particularly impressed. I think he can see that Bernice is infatuated with him and that he knows he doesn’t feel the same way about her.
Side show Bernice on the prowl. A retro Hollywood actress in her dreams. Having one’s dreams is not always a good thing. Sometimes a dream can turn into a nightmare in an instant.
I think some may be reading too much into this mini-arc. I think Jack is simply telling Bernice to relax, Monstro isn’t on the brink of death. Remember: Bernice tends to overthink things.
The last person Jack gifted was Luann; i.e., flowers after he broke her foot. There was no reason to gift Bernice except empathy for her not having a pet. Bernice has become enamored with Jack. Luann knows of Bernice’s more than platonic interest in Jack. Apparently the only one that doesn’t know about if Jack.
A little sweat off her brow, so I guess Bernice really cares about Monstro. It’s funny Bernice can express her love to a fish, but can’t express it to Jack. Guess you don’t get rejection from a fish as she might from Jack, who doesn’t seem too interested in anything but a friendship. TBD ;-)
You’re all reading a lot into this. Fish do require care, more than mammals actually. I think she’s just worried about her pet. It was Luann who called Jack, not Bernice. She’s been trying to set her up for awhile now.
There’s a diner in my town that had a goldfish whose swim bladder went bad. He couldn’t swim upright and would have died, but they made a rig out of plastic straws and other things that allowed him to swim upright and he survived and lived several more years. His picture is on the front of their menu, and if you ask about it, the give you a copy of a news article about it and a website you can see it.
Kind of the usual, slower moving, mid-day panels that seem to typically fill a Wednesday or a Thursday. But, still a few nuggets to glean I believe:
1. For me, Bernice’s concern is real (even though some other do debate that). I see her concern as legitimately real because she was quite concerned and worried initially on Tuesday’s panels. For me, that she tried to dress up a bit for Jack does not change that she is worried and concerned about Monstro.
2. Jack’s comment of “Breath” to Bernice is an indication that he is concerned/worried about Bernice. This is logical and seems very much in keeping with Jack’s demeanor. He is a nice guy, and he enjoys being nice and doing nice things.
3. For me, by the fact that since Monday, when we saw Monstro fully….. and from Tuesday and beyond we have seen only edges/parts/incomplete glimpses of Monstro…. I am of the belief that Greg had chosen specifically to de-emphasize Monstro in terms of significance and focus in this arc. I believe Greg will have Monstro be perfectly fine in the end, and that he was simply wanting a story of sorts to be able to easily bring Bernice and Jack together again…. so he can explore the romantic potential between the two.
4. IMO, I think the pairing of Jack and Bernice as a couple would be a really interesting, fun, and dynamic mix for Greg to portray. Jack and Bernice have quite different demeanors…. but in the same vein…. I think they both share a lot of internal characteristics about caring, trying to do the right thing, and in being willing to work hard.
I’ve never seen someone so passionate about a fish. It comes off as overly dramatic. And if she loves Monstro as much as she claims, that tank would have more in it than an air filter. Bern can’t even be herself around Jack. How can a relationship work between them? I hope it doesn’t. Luann and Jack have much better chemistry.
Right on, Jack!. Of course, Bernie isn’t paying that kind of attention to you. She is too immersed into the other kind of attention she is paying you….
