“That’ll be $35…” Is this an attempt at a joke or is Bernice actually trying to extort money from her best friend? After all Bernice volunteered to do all this on-line searching. It’s not like Luann couldn’t have done it herself.
Also “continued next week?” I feel like I am literally watching paint dry.
Aw, Bernice. She is your bestie. I like you but for this, I don’t. She is practically family and you are living in her parents’ house – rent free. And you didn’t charge Nancy for organizing her bookkeeping. You could do the same for her daughter.
I seem to recall that some time back, maybe a couple of months, Luann confessed that she wasn’t sure if we would continue to have a job at Kids 1st. Nothing more was made of it at the time but it suggests that Karen was considering changing Luann’s job for a while now. How could Luann suspect she was going to lose her job long before Tara cost her her job? That suggests that the original plan was that Lincoln Elm, lost the funding for Kidz 1st and had to cancel the project. But apparently that wouldn’t reflect badly enough on Luann so Karen had Tara walk all over Luann first in the playground and then in the Principal’s office. And how Bernice is making Luann look bad with this job search. This is kind of like having someone write “Dick Tracy” who hates Dick Tracy.
I do wonder if this will continue to next week, and Greg will do one of his famous misdirection plays where Bernie will laugh and tell Luann she was just kidding.
.
Then again, this is Bernice we are talking about – she generally does not laugh or joke much. So, maybe not.
1) … be talking with someone else about job ideas?(Jack? Brad and/or Toni? A career counselor at her college? … ? See my comment from Wednesday for some other possibilities.)
2) … be at the first of series of job interviews (mostly for jobs that are absurdly unsuitable for various reasons)?
3) … be starting the first day of her new job as a [your idea here]?
4) … get an unexpected job offer out of the blue from [someone else’s idea here]?
5) … be abducted by a flying saucer from the Planet Zork?
6) … be left in limbo as the action switches to a different story line?
Seriously, Bernice should really consider offering her ability to search for possible careers and jobs. It could be the start of a career for HER. One much more suited to her than being a therapist. Luann chose six offers and sent in the questions. I hope night work at the kennel and school bus driver work are between them.
Career changes coming for both. Bernice is showing far more of a business and organizational sense, than she is deluding herself into thinking she could ever be a psychologist.
What an ass. You’re charging her $35 yet you get to stay with her and her family and eat their meals. As far as I know they’re not charging you. Unless I miss that days strip.
Bernice, this might be funny if you weren’t a freeloader. You should be standing on your head and bending over backwards to help Luann and her family. This reminds me of a former military officer friend who offered to help me find a job. I didn’t say anything for 30 seconds and he jumped all over me. His unsolicited advice always came in the form of directives. Also reminds me of when I graduated college and moved to a big city. My aunt offered, even insisted, free room and board. She felt it was the right thing to do to help someone in the family. After two months, I realized I was taking advantage of her generosity and finding my own place was the right (and mature) thing to do. Bernice, the self proclaimed mature one (I did get a big laugh out of that one) has no self awareness.
It is not cool to help a friend and charge them for it without stating the costs before the research. I think Bernice needs to remember the help she received from Luann’s family when she needed it. I do think she is kidding or maybe Luann will turn around and ask her parents to calculate the costs for Bernice to live at the DeGroot’s home. Let us see how this goes and turns out. Staying tuned!
Bernice just taught our girl a valuable life lesson. However, Luann seems to be at her airheaded best this week. She seems to have taken over the “dumb blond” spot from Tiffany.
reminds me of what a friend of mine did. offers to buy me some coffee, we go back to school and in front of everyone says, “oh by the way, you now owe me…”
And as soon as one of them calls Kids 1st for a reference, and finds out you let your friend do an archery presentation without permission, that application will be in the trash.
This is a strange sequence of arcs. First we have the return to Mooney quad room complete with new character associations, conflict between Tiff and Stef, nudism talk and an actual semi naked snog-fest. Then a weird week of Luann college angst nightmares. Luann then puts her personality to sleep, gets a smack down from The Principal, gets chided by Tara for not standing up for herself, three days of parental befuddlement, and another four days of passivity and denial while Bernice does anything useful about the situation.
What have we learned from all this: Tara makes $40/hour and Bernice charges $35 as a job researcher. While usually helpful, Frank and Nancy can be more clueless than Gunther’s mom, Irma. Kip and Stef engaged in make up sex – maybe. Luann exhibits extreme passivity and denial when confronted with adversity. Tara is still a lightning rod. Bernice still likes to take charge of things.
Whither are we bound next week. We have no clue. Maybe something with Brad, Toni and Shannon?
Bernice is kidding about the $35 charge. All the comments otherwise are really beyond sarcasm. Issue still not resolved yet. Still waiting to see what will happen.
Competent employers don’t want a head shot with an application. A photo can enable discrimination by race, age, and sex. If you’re hiring people, you want to avoid even the possibility of that.
I was hoping to add Crankshaft to my list so I can remove LuAnn, which I have been reading since they were kids (me too!) and the comic was funny every day. Crankshaft is not available on GoComics. Any suggestions for something I can read that IS funny and not a graphic novel?
Luann does not owe Bernice a thing – you don’t jump in without being asked and do things for a friend who – HELLO just lost half her income and then suddenly exclaimthat you are owed some random amount of cash. That is low and nasty. Bernice must be joking!
Some were wondering what job Bernie has. She may have a little side gig doing computer and spreadsheet work. When Bern sees something that needs doing and which is a match for her skills, she jumps in and does it w/o being asked.
As much as I loathe Bernice, Luann should be charged money based on that last comment alone. The unmitigated gall it takes to whine about how much work something takes when you weren’t even the one doing the work?

No, no.
Pay Bern the 35 bucks, Luann.
Then help her pack.
Since she doesn’t appreciate free room and board, it’s time she returned home.
Maybe Bern can help her brother find a job.
And charge him 35 bucks for the effort.

Who knows. Maybe Bernice is just joking, but acknowledging that what she has done for Luann did take some effort – effort that Luann has yet to show.
On the other hand, for many, Bernice is a villain in this strip, albeit a low level one. And this surely helps keep her in „character“.
