If nothing is ever going to be allowed to change I suppose it doesn’t matter what Luann’s score is. I wonder, though if Bernice score confirms she decision to be a psychologist or that of a drone worker bee?
Luann has previously speculated about becoming a “thermodynamics astrophysicist” see strip of 2012/06/04]. But I’ve speculated that Tiffany may be the one who’s headed for a career in astrophysics. For anyone who missed it the first time, here’s my TifFantasy of how events might unfold:
Evidently, Moony Uni has a requirement that even non-science majors have to take a few science courses; that’s how Tiff ended up being Gunther’s bio lab study buddy [2015/02/14]. When she needs to take another science course and finds that the easy courses for non-majors in physics and geology (fondly known to students as “Physics for Poets” and “Rocks for Jocks”) are already filled, somebody suggests that she try Astronomy 112 (“’Scopes for Dopes”).
Tiffany instead ends up registering for Astro 221, a sophomore-level survey course for science majors. Possibly contributing to her confusion over the course number, the description of Astro 221 in the course catalog mentions that it includes a unit on cosmology, which Tiff mistakes for cosmetology.
Though Tiffany hasn’t taken all the prerequisites for Astro 221, she gets admitted anyway, largely on the strength of a recommendation letter from her counselor, Margo Phelps Fogarty, who thinks she’s recommending Tiff for a cosmetology course. In particular, Mrs. F. mentions being impressed by the work Tiffany did on Bernice’s hair for her valedictory at Pitts High [2014/06/06-07, 2014/06/14]. The astro prof assumes that the letter refers to some independent study project Tiff did involving the constellation Berenice’s Hair. The prof also takes the phrase “for her valedictory” to mean that Tiffany was valedictorian. (What else could it mean? Even with the quirkiness of Luanniverse time, the ancient Queen Berenice II of Egypt, for whom the constellation is named, could never have been valedictorian at Pitts High.)
Man, Bernice did not even scoff when Luann said she slotted as an astrophysicist, she assumed (and probably rightfully so) that Luann forgot to carry a decimal or divided instead of multiplied by 3. I am still interested what field the test suggests for Bern: you just know it isn’t going to be in the counseling or psychology fields. My guess is forensic accountant where she finds hidden accounts and helps throw white collar criminals into the clinker. I would say “jobsworth” but that technically is not a job, just a description of a low level bureaucrat or administrator with zilch for personality or empathy and is quite the stickler for rules and regulations so that they probably have them memorized…… Actually that describes Bern quite well.
Interesting that Luann tests out to be an astrophysicist! Y’all might not believe this, but back on the strip from 10 years ago (our time), June 04, 2012, Luann declared to Bernice and Delta that she was aspiring to be a “Thermodynamics Astrophysicist”…
Maybe a career path for Bernice could be to create extraordinarily complex placement and personality tests to be administered to people unsure about their futures.
Astrophysicist? Well, looks like you’re on your way to a fortune telling empire. Not a bad job. You’d appear on TV shows to discuss the celebrities on their astrology and read their tarot cards or call a senace. These TV shows pay their guess well, ya know. Oh, with talk shows, you appear live! They even allow you to perform on stage. Publish a book and get it on the number one spot on the best seller list. Give Tiffany a run for her money. Heck, Bets, too.
Such enthusiasm ♡. Luann seems to like the idea really a lot. Of course, this possibility is completely impossible for Bernice. I know, Luann probably miscalculated, but… she has proved to be good at science studies in the Community College. It would be an interesting story to see. Not like her returning to the theater, but it would certainly be very original to see.
Hilarity ensues, just as I predicted, although this was not a stretch. I think something very predictive will come out if this but I’m particularly want to see what Bernice’s result will be. I think Luann will probably be a combination of art and teaching though.
Bernice seems to hang around Luann so she can feel superior in contrast, so she’d flip out if Luann became an Astrophysicist instead of feeling happy for her.
Bernice has developed the perfect way to interact with Luann. Instead of getting mad or frustrated with Luann’s limitations, she just stays calm and states the obvious. Maybe she should be working with ADHD adults?
Everybody is laughing at the suggestion. Do we have any idea how Luann is currently doing in her coursework? Is she flunking out in the sciences? Is she doing surprisingly well in any particular classes? Wasn’t she invited to be a TA for – what was it – a chemistry class? Maybe it’s not as absurd as it sounds.
Looks like a math “word problem” to me. I disliked them as a youngster, and now that I’m in my eighth decade I still dislike them. Algebraic equations I could handle. Geometric proofs were no problem. I even managed the difference quotient of calculus. But if a bathtub had three drains and two faucets, and if the bathmat had to cover one drain while not being under one faucet, then how many square yards of plastic would it take to make the shower curtain – that defeated me every time.
OK, as one who spent many years conducting career counseling, I must speak. I always made it very clear with people that an interest inventory—which it looks like Luann is taking—indicates one’s interests, not one’s actual abilities. Further, I warned them that just because the results might indicate high levels of interests in a career, it doesn’t necessarily mean they would enjoy doing it on a day-to-day basis, or that they might learn how to do it that easily. Those inventories are given merely to give undecided people some ideas about careers that they might want to research further in order to see if their interests, abilities and personality would be a good fit. A good career counselor will act as a sounding board for the person, and know the right questions to ask so that the final decision will be the person’s, not the counselor’s. I’ll get off my soap box now.
Luann needs a new best friend. Berniece is always knocking Luann’s dreams and aspirations. Is she going to do that to the people she counsels? That definitely won’t be good.
the test doesn’t say what you are going to become (as Luann seems to think) but what you could become if you make the decision and put in the training and effort.
No test that reduces everythng to a simple number without considering specific answers can really tell you anything about personality skills or career paths.

Why multiply by 3? All that’s going to do is stretch the scores so they are about 3 apart.
