Hmm, maybe the money is fake…

And after all those good thoughts yesterday about how much Tiffany has grown up we learn that she hasn’t grown a bit.

Something Tiffany shouldn’t say in the dining room!

Something tells me Ox has never watched many movies, TV shows, or theatrical performances.

Someone said “If an actor can fake sincerity, he has it made.”

One day Tiffany was nice and sweet the next she is back to her old self.

Isn’t it odd that Mr. A is giving her a tip before he’s even finished his meal??

I think Tiff overestimates her acting skills. She showed good banter skills.

There have been plenty of studies that have shown attractive females get the best tips. Tiffany may think it’s because of “acting”, but it’s really a lot more about being a pretty young woman. Sorry, Ox. You will never get the tips that Tiffany does.

For all the people acting like Tiffany hasn’t grown from this one comic, I would like to remind you she’s working in customer service. Learning how to act around customers is an important skill if you want to make those tips. You can’t for instance let a bad mood on your part ruin the customer’s experience.

And as for the money, we all need money and there is nothing wrong with Tiffany feeling good about having gotten a good tip.

Sincerity is the most important past of acting… (anybody??)

Acting is a performance art.

Tiff – you’re talking doubles. Ox has it correct. You are faking an interest in Mr A for a big tip. Well, that’s a server’s bread and butter – the tips. My son, who is now a manager of a restaurant chain, used to do what Tiff did. Memorized his regular’s orders, their names, their families’ names, etc. They loved him and he regularly brought around $200-400 in tips daily. A lot of servers, including my other son, quit because they did not get the tips he got. They couldn’t – they all wanted him. My son misses serving – hard work, yes, but the money was good. He accepted a promotion just for better hours so he could be home with family on a more regular basis. The server’s hours are unpredictable.

It’s called being a suck up, an insincere form of flattery for personal gain. Tiffany doesn’t like work but LOVES money. So she’ll do whatever it take to make maximum $$$$ with minimal effort. And if this means throwing cheap flattery around, so be it.

Fake is fake. Acting is working.

Dammit, Tiffany….just…..just dammit….

One of the reasons I always prefer fast food joints. People pretending to give a rats rear end about me and/or my ‘experience’ for a gratuity. I always prefer the bottom line in what something will cost me.

What about the breathing? The panting? The moaning? The screaming?

Whoops, wrong program.

Tiff “performs” a service. What’s good for you is good for her, and she plays her role very well. Old guys enjoy getting attention from attractive young ladies, so they too, are performing under a spotlight in a fake world. Everyone is happy, no one gets hurt, and anybody who denies this is a liar. Remember, even Nancy drew favorable attention when she was behind the bar.

The key to success in life is displaying sincerity. If you can fake that, you’ve got it made.

Tiff’s comment is the fourth wall screaming from one Swiss Alp to another.

The commentary in the middle panel could be used in a number of situations. Greg shows Tiff and OX after a date, and they are leaning back against the pillows in bed.

I think she means she can really feel good interacting with customers, but the front stage performance is a what is it important. I never acted but I have had two careers with front stage as part, as a trial lawyer, and later as a community college instructor. You have to put in a persona and if you believe in what you’re doing that makes the resulting “performances” better. Does this mean Tiffany is less shallow. Yes, but it remains to be seen if she realizes herself.

I retract my earlier statement

Oh hey! It’s Moose— I mean, Ox. I forgot he exists.

Tiffany can say what she wants, but hearing the stories of regular consumers and remembering it to talk to them is a big effort. It’s impossible to act out being kind and care of everyone every day without being able at doing it in reality. Tiffany may not even realize it, but the way she treats others has changed a lot since she’s been a waitress. Now, let’s see what she do if Stefi is one of the consumers!

Now, Now, Ox.

Don’t be dissuaded and take Tiff’s words as “shallowness,” as far too many good natured but judgmental “folks” are doing here today.

The gal has had it hard the last few years, “thanks” to her “creators.”

You don’t have everything but then, suddenly have everything taken away from you, and not be affected.

And during the course of all those bad experiences over the las few years, Tiffany’s heart has grown three sizes bigger. And NOT because of any “health problems.”

She now appreciates making a living on her own.

She’d make you a good first G/F.

You’d make her a great first B/F.

A far better “B/F” than that joker currently washing dishes in the kitchen who’s been helping himself to a percentage of Tiffany’s tips.

And “mutual agreement,” be damned. ;-)

So, Tiffany doesn’t actually appreciate the people in her life after all? She’s just bluffing?

If that really is Snr. Aragones, we should be reading “Luann en Espagnol”.

Finally another story line

When you work with for tips you have to be “on” to be successful. If you don’t learn how to do it you won’t make good money or have return customers. The customers don’t really want you as a personal friend, but they do want you to engage and be interested in them and their order. I’ve noticed that older men are the ones that want to chat the most, not in a creepy way, just in a kind of “need to talk to someone” way.

Tiff has learned how to hone her waitress skills to provide the service her customers appreciate. She has incorporated her acting experience into this new phase in her life.

From having been a waiter when younger, the right attitude and treatment of customers helps overcome little issues which come up.

More disappointment for Ox.

I wonder if Greg had always assumed that Tiffany’s future would be as a waitress? Surely not, as her father is still an entrepreneur. But she hasn’t reaped the rewards of that life in a very long time. It would be sad to think that the GnK team would relegate Tiff to such a future.

she HAS grown up

Tiff remembers details about her customers. She remembers what they share with her. This is beyond acting. She has moved in to caring and even though she is getting reimbursed for it, much of it would still have to be genuine.

And since her dad no longer has the leech, Tiff probably does not need the money. She appears to be actually enjoying her work and the fact that people appreciate her for the work she does. Yes, they show that appreciation with money but if gifts is your love language, that can make you feel appreciated.

So every married woman is an actress???

We are all actors every day. That’s the socialization we are taught as children, if we are well raised. Shakespeare said the world is a stage and we are the actors.

Did I not forecast a while back that the acting bug would return? I’ll double down: Tiff will get another opportunity, and guess who she’ll be paired with for a male lead?

I know Tiffany gets dumped on a lot, but getting attacked for being good at customer service? Do you think other customer service people just legitimately like you and are always in a good mood?

It doesn’t matter if her kindness is genuine or if she’s acting. The recipients benefit either way.

I wonder if Sergio Aragonés’ grandkids are really named Ruby, Opal and Amber?

Faking. Lying. Acting. All reap rewards, sadly.

It’s odd she considers her behavior acting, rather than just being nice. Even if her motive is to get tips, she’s still pleasant to customers, unless it’s Ann Awful!

Maybe she’s “acting” with Ox and being honest with the customers?

If you work with people in any capacity, whether it’s customer service or colleagues we wear a face that isn’t necessarily who we really are. It’s the face that gets the job done. Everyone of us will put on a fake face if it will get us paid and the more the better.

Good practice for better paying acting, too.

For those of you who are commenting believing that Tiff is shallow and money-grubbing, I want you all to consider how a public servant (like a public librarian) should behave to an annoying patron. Currently, we are facing an upswing of “Constitutional Rights Audits” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Amendment_audits. Often this includes a patron wanting to enter a public library with a gun, then trying to film the ensuing conflict. “I have a right to bring this here AK 47 into this here public library and enter the children’s area” I have yet to see a librarian lose their cool while blocking the patron from entering the library. Do you really want us to behave poorly and make the six o’clock news? Are we faking it? You betcha. But we are required to be polite and civil.

I can eat something tasty at home for under $10. When I go out, I consider $10 was the value of the food, and the rest of my tab was for ambiance, company and entertainment. Over the years, I became personal friends with several servers.

Honestly it’s how I get through work.

I learned to act. I am basically a shy, reserved person. But I can act like the life of the party and people believe it. I’ve learned to act the part that is expected for the situation.

Just noticed the K2 on their uniforms. Thought I was in the Bizarro strip for a second.

I think it was Sam Goldwyn who said that once you strip away all the fake tinsel in Hollywood, you find the real tinsel underneath. Tiff will fit right in.

To be a good server, you have to act. You have to smile, act cheerful and happy around all types of customers, to include the dreaded Karen. Tiffany is a survivor. She will adapt to whatever situation she is in and do what she needs to do to come out ahead.

Good point. There are actually living, breathing people who think that fiction writing (novels, short stories, plays, etc.) are no different from “lying”.

Does Ox ask Tiffany out on a date before the week is out?

Well…. You can’t pay people to care, but you can certainly pay them to pretend (to care).

While I understand the performance aspect of public service jobs I’m pretty sure that if Bernice (or even Bets) were a waitress and saying the same things, commentators here would be posting far more scathing attacks than they are to Tiffany.

Honesty is the best policy.

Making Friends with customers can pay off.

My sister worked as a Waitress all her life. She had customers whom she had known for over 30 years who would follow her to whichever restaurant she worked in whenever the Previous restaurant went out of business. Since 60% of restaurants tend to go out of business within 5 years, she & her customers had to move on more than once.

Heck, one in three restaurants won’t survive their first year. The Failure rate does level off a bit if they make it past the first year. And, for a lot of the ones that go out of business after 3 years, it is often because the Owners decided to “Refresh” the business and either Moved or Renamed it.

I know of one locally owned restaurant that was successful for over 30 years, even keeping about half of their Original Employees the entire time. Also an awful lot of their “Original Customers”. The place finally went out of business when the Owner decided to retire and none of his Kids wanted to take over that part of the business. They were able to sell the Real Estate the place sat on for a Huge amount of money. I think a Condo Developer bought the property. A one story Restaurant & its parking lot just doesn’t generate the kind of profits a Multi story Condo can.

I wish Tiffany hadn’t diminished her own gracious behavior by making a mercenary excuse for it.

Seriously? I THOUGHT Tiffany was being nice.

I’m sure Tiffany understands her distinction, but I’m not sure I do.

But if her acting keeps the customers happy, and her happy, I deem it a Good Thing ( fake or not)….

It used to bother me a lot when running into fakes in public. But with all the acrimony out there now, a bit of smiles and B.S. would be downright wonderful in comparison.

I was going to criticize Tiffany’s attitude, but I thought it through and I can’t do it because how many people don’t pretend in their job, waiters, customer service people, even co-workers, there are many who pretend to be nice and in reality they are not, Tiffany is just being like any other human being at work!
