Chapter 1. Write a book about getting wealthy by writing books.
Chapter 2. Get fools to pay $125 for it.
The End
There is lots of free information online about how to become a successful author. It is not an easy occupation these days, with the internet and everything vying for one’s attention.
A better book might be The Way To Wealth by Ben Franklin which gave us the timeless nugget…
" Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise "
I love Luann’s sense of humor ♡. She knew that her father would tell her something like that and she thought of this joke to mess with him. I wonder if she will use it with all of the people that will ask her the same question or just with her family and closest friends, other people may think she’s serious. Plus, Luann finally recognizes a new career option beyond becoming a teacher!!!
Frank has that look on his face in the last panel as he is thinking that he was already suckered into buying that exact same book. He is too embarrassed to offer to loan it to Luann.
Over the last few days, I noted that a number of people here mentioned Luann and Quill’s relationship. I remember how it fell apart when Luann felt that his acting career took precedence over their relationship. Reminds me of a quote I heard years ago:
“You fell in love with my flowers but not my roots, so when autumn came you didn’t know what to do…”
Frank should tell her that 8 to 10 hours of tutoring Vale McNamara should earn her the coin to buy that course or she can wait for 6 months or so and some sap who actually paid $125 for it will unload it at a used book shop and she can buy it on the cheap then. In the meantime, keep plugging away at tutoring, do well in your Ju-Co courses and perhaps plan to transfer to |Mooney if you can corral the needed funds, easier said than done nowadays.
“Oh Luann, for chriiisake you’re in college… you’ve taken writing classes. “…… this time i agree with Bern…… ‘’ just write something already; you have an entire coming of age experience on tape, now you shape it and present it….you don’t need a how- to-manual’, just your brain… if you can find it….”
The writing contest will probably help her make a decision on a writing career. But if she does waste her money on the writing course, it’s only paper & ink.But then again so is she. “Paper & ink” could be sung to the tune of “Dust in the wind”.
Luann continues to prove what a lazy. self absorbed and clueless waste if space she really is. I don’t know why she doesn’t just join the military and learn how to grow a spine. I hope this story is done. I don’t like seeing Luann in Luann anymore. If Greg and Karen think she’s cute, she’s not. She’s just a really annoying example of GenZ (sit back, don’t do the work, buy something that makes you feel good about yourself and then don’t use it). Those books would be found on the shelf covered in dust in a month.
do the math Luann (if ya can). the prize money (which is just to spike peoples’ interest) is $50. Now you buy a useless how to book for $125. The contest, even if you win it (unlikely given your approach) puts you in the hole for $75.
It’s such a nice expression, in comics form, of a father talking to his young adult daughter who being learning about life (albeit being basically clueless about so much) who has an idea she is sure is an answer, while dad knows better. How many of us were talked down from, or comforted by dads, or moms, or in some cases grandparents, from ideas we were sure were winners, until we find that the old folks were right? That’s what this is; sweet.
I wrote magazine articles once. The writing isn’t the problem; getting someone to buy the writing is. I’d send out oodles of query letters daily, and, if lucky, get back refusal letters. Many didn’t reply back at all.
Frank is on point. I know from experience that making a living from writing books is a difficult way to earn an income. I have written four books in the last twelve years and none of them have sold more than a dozen copies as they are independently published. I’m hoping the two children’s books I hope to publish next year will do better. And I need the income…
No, Luann. Don’t buy that book. Books like this go out of date so quickly. Also, they offer very little good information that will actually help you. You ALREADY have a potential market for your piece. An amateur writing contest is a great place to start and sometimes the judges will offer valuable advice FOR FREE. Just sit down and write the piece. Make it the best you can and then send it off. Keep doing this over and over until you sell another piece or win a prize. There are no shortcuts. And her dad is exactly right. Being a writer is probably the toughest job ever to make money. The average working writer only earns about $2,000 a year so most of them also need a day job. Writing is HARD.
I looked into one of those. “I just write a few minutes every day and live a life of wealth and luxury.” Yeah, maybe, but you have to work your butt off SELLING…

Did Cynthia Jai write that one too?
Because if so, between you, Bets and Tiffany, Cindy is making a lot of dough selling self-help books to hopeful young women.

This kind of “come on” was often followed by something like, “Buy now and we’ll also send you a free Ginsu knife, and a handy carrot chopper.”
