I don’t think anyone saw that coming. With her shady history and criminal background.. does anyone think she would be some great writer? Highly unlikely! It will sure be interesting to see how this prize ceremony plays out.
And the punch in the face is complete. Great job G&K. Everyone on the writing contest are both dumber than Luann but placed hired on the voting. How can Luann live with herself.
And the Lovely Tara Starr makes an appearance. Clever title for the resident archer to focus her story on. Maybe this will spur our two BFFs to reconnect with The Commando Lady!
First, Vale wins second place with something idiotic. And now Shady Lady Tara Starr, of all people, wins first place.
I’m in agreement with Lu.
This “contest” was rigged.
Considering that Tara cost Lu her old job, plus the fact that Lu took Tara in when she was running in terror from her cousin Stella, Miz Starr Should give Luann that 50 bucks.
But of course she won’t.
(SIGH)
Well, at least We now KNOW that Tara didn’t move to Utah.
In my 35 years of teaching, I was involved with many writing contests. My role was collecting the entries and getting them to the judge(s). Almost always, the entries the judges picked for prizes were not the ones I would have picked.
Tiffany could have won if she had told the story of her leaving the hospital on a windy day still wearing her backless hospital gown. The “fallout” was bigger than two atomic bombs.
When this story started on Monday I thought we might see Luann and Bernice go out and shop for clothes, something more stylish than the slacks and Ts they are always being drawn in. Followed by a trip to the awards ceremony where Luann would get to meet new people, have interesting conversations and hilarity ensuing. Instead, they have spent 4 days in Bernice’s room doing nothing but talk. And Talk and talk. N o wonder this Luann and Bernice stories fall flat. They never do anything. They don’t go to classes. They don’t go to the dog park. They don’t drop in on The Fuse. They don’t work. They don’t even write sarcastic / critical essays to vapid comic strips they keep reading. Go Trick or Treating! Organize a Thanksgiving Party. Put on a Christmas show at the Fuze. Just, you know, do something.
Tara’s one also sounds like a school assignment where you had to write something pretending to be a historical/mythical character. What did Bernice find for Luann, a school-related literary contest? Is it possible that Bernice could only be sarcastic? Luann is rightly suspicious! But at least, probably we will finally see Tara again ♡.
Again, Luann’s town population: 45. How could it possibly be that she knows BOTH the frontrunners of an open contest while she being the third? Oh, well…
Tara, Tara, Tara! Not the beginning of the Pacific WW2, but should be quite the significant event in this arc in Luannverse. Glad to see that she might appear, she is a kid with a tough background, who is challenging but is drawn determined to finish college. I see she is Gett ng shade already, but I look at her as one of the better recurring characters in the strip.
Oh dear….this arc (so far) is appealing to Luann’s worst traits; instead of being happy to have placed in an essay contest and eager to work on her next piece she’s being portrayed as shallow, jealous and now suspicious. But it’s just and essay contest which is subjective and humor is probably one the most difficult categories of writing. One person’s funny is another person’s ‘stupid’. Someone could read her piece on a haircut and say ‘oh how stupid is this’. I’m not faulting Bernice at all; she got Luann to take interest (briefly!!!) in something productive…I wonder how the awards ceremony will go.
One more Tara, Tara comment. I’m probably not the only one who noticed the similarity in name to Brenda Starr, an iconic, before her time, female, glamorous, foreign correspondent, always into glamorous adventures, where she had to be brave to take the chances she was drawn in, probably would have been a scrappy kid. I like to think Tara Starr is a vision of a Brenda Starr in the 21st Century social idiom.
After extensive investigations required to disprove Republican claims, the only frauds found in the 2020 election were people voting in someone else’s name, usually a recently deceased relative. They were a minuscule percentage of the vote—like 19 out of a couple million. If you sincerely believe in election fraud, please volunteer to be a poll worker. The ballots are never out of the sight of people chosen by the party leaders of each party that wants someone there. It would be impossible to “drop off” a box of votes that didn’t happen, because the vote count has to match the number of people who voted, even if it takes all night to figure out why it’s one off. Then, the ballots are sealed in boxes and driven to the central counting area, by two people, one from each party, where they are again tabulated with the same standards. Mail in or drop off ballots have a number on the outer envelope which has to match a registered voters name, which is also on the outer envelope and go directly to the central counting office. Whenever the ballot shows up, the voter’s name is marked off the voter list, so there is no way to vote more than once in the same name. So, it wouldn’t be possible to photocopy ballots and turn them in—they have to have the correct information, one time, not multiple times. Election fraud is just not viable with the systems in place.
Well Greg and Karen have finally put the nail in the Luann character. Not only do they have her echoing a horrible, unpatriotic, self-centered attitude that exists in our country, they have her cast as a judgmental sore loser. This is the last subject I want to see aired in the comics. If they want to do political satire they need to create a different platform. It’s disappointing to see them going after the low hanging fruit, but at least Luann’s on the same level as Bernice now – self-righteous and self-entitled. Shame on you Greg and Karen. You aren’t helping and you are not funny today. I can only hope they will show Tara, Vale and the judging panel letting her know what an idiot she is when she makes her accusations. Maybe they’ll take away her third place award. That would be a good ending for this exercise in poor story writing.
I hope we get to see Tara’s entry “Oops William Tell Missed.” Tara is an archer. It might be a good story. I wish G & K could show us something funny that Luann wrote.
I agree with quite a few posters here. Did G&K have to go there. I don’t like to come here and hear political views. One side or the other. I come here to escape that. I know they thought it would be funny but not in today’s environment. I skipped most of the comments today because of all the negativity. It’s bad enough I have to see political ads while I’m reading the comic and comments. I know I could become a premium member so I don’t have to see ads, but I’m quite frugal.
Yeah, that’s the way it goes nowadays. “What, there’s no way I could have lost fairly! They must have cheated!” Happens in chess, poker, elections, you name it.
Don’t go there, Luann. Do NOT follow in the footsteps of Al Gore, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Even if you feel you have strong evidence to the contrary there are times when you simply must admit you got outplayed.
Now i’m disappointed in Evans. He’s managed to avoid political puns up until now. And of course we get all the haters from both sides spewing the nonsense. Then again, the Luann universe may exist in Bidens 54th state….
People are reflecting the messed up fake political issue of our tomes, but should not put too much, if any, meaning in the ballot comment. It’s just a setup.
