My brother went to New Orleans twice for business conferences (he is involved in the traffic light department of the city where we live). He hopes with all of his heart not to go there ever again.
Totally excusable. LSU used to have a conference on computational physics just before Mardi Gras, and I attended it twice. I have no very clear recollection of the physics discussed, but the food made a lasting impression!
We are not fans of the Big Easy. Yes, the food is wonderful, but it’s horribly expensive. Drive west a couple of hours to Lafayette, the heart of Cajun Country. The food is heavenly, and it is much, much more reasonably priced. Oh, and the “Cajun Food Tour” is just unbelievably good.
Now that I am remembering how much fun and and how delicious both times we took the tour were, I have just decided that we are going back again, and we live in North Carolina.
No matter where you live, make the trip to Lafayette, go there and take the Cajun Food Tour. You will thank me afterward.
Speaking of book signings, here in Madison we just kicked off the Wisconsin Book Festival last night with an excellent presentation (followed by a signing) from Michael Waldman about his recently released book The Supermajority: How the Supreme Court Divided America. Many more wonderful books on the docket as well over the next few weeks. (I love books.) If you’re in the area, check ’em out:
We played against a softball team here called the Muffalettas; they really never won many games, but they were a great bunch of guys with great attitudes, they had a good time together…

After all that, he’ll be too fat to lean forward and sign. He’ll have to sign at arm’s length. He’ll also have trouble flying home.

No one will enter the book shop after that. Too much gas.

In New Orleans you can grab your drink to go and walk the streets drinking it. Does paper cups make more sense now?

There are places where food’s good in the US. Especially where french, Italian or Hungarians settled. And even good bread where Germans relocated to.
