Of 8 Virginians that held the rank of Colonel in 1861 in the US Army, 7 served on the Union side during the southern War of Treason; only Robert E. Lee chose to serve the traitors.
Every Southern state except South Carolina produced enough Union volunteers to form their own regiments. General George Thomas came from Virginia; Admiral David Farragut came from Tennessee. (Texas deposed its pro-Union governor Sam Houston, who said: “I wish, if this Union must be dissolved, that its ruins may be the monument of my grave, and the graves of my family.”)
Actually, there were numerous causes. Aside from the obvious schism between the abolitionists and the anti-abolitionists, there were economic factors, both domestic and inter…
Those southern supporters of the Yankees were called “scallawags”. And their main motive was that they knew that the odds were stacked in favor of a Union victory, and they wanted to cash in on the destruction of the Confederacy. Rhett Butler, in “GWTW”, was aware of that.
Believe me, they didn’t give a rat’s @ss about slavery or so-called “states’ rights”.
I immediately thought of General George Thomas of Virigina, who helped the Union as the Rock of in Chickamauga as someone who fought for democracy (as it was defined then). My other thought was the Scopes Trial in 1925. The nun who taught us biology never mentioned it, because we were strickly learning biology with Gregor Mendel, Charles Darwin, Louis Pasteur et alii. There was always “Moral/Social Guidence” in another class, which I called “Religion in Disguise” back then.
Very nice handwriting, Ma’am. Doubly difficult for a left-hander, especially with that grip; difficult anyway with chalk on a board. You probably learned it in the old-fashioned schools and colleges where you studied history.
Texas seceded twice to keep slavery. Once from Mexico, once from the US. Today they’re talking about seceding again for the “right” to treat brown people as objects.
THANK YOU, MR. TRUDEAU, FOR CALLING OUT OUR TEENY TINY TYRANT. Next to tfg, ronda santis is the biggest embarrassment I’ve ever had to live under in this state. And to think this state was Democratic when I moved here 30 years ago. . .
Ah, young minds, so easily manipulated. And the books being banned, I seem to remember, someone in recent history doing that, with great enthusiasm. Name’s on the tip of my tongue. Hmmm….
After a couple decades of carefully keeping current events and politics out of my classroom (I teach a foreign language), I finally reminded my upper-level students about the history of warfare on the European continent (which they already knew), told them it wasn’t my job to tell them how to vote, brought up the fact that, since 1945 Europe had 75 years of peace (yes, I did mention Bosnia) largely because of NATO, that the next presidential election will determine if we stay in NATO or withdraw, and hope that they would include that factor into their decision. We’ll see what happens.
Slavery was also explicitly enshrined in the treasonous constitution. And it was proclaimed to be the only reason for secession by no less an authority than traitor “Vice President” Alexander H. Stevens.
Yeah, this guy would have been, I think, a great uncle of my grandfather… He left the little town that he lived in in North Carolina, traveled to Ohio, joined a Union regiment there, and fought with the North. He was never mentioned at the big family reunion that was held to celebrate the return of his brother, who’d fought for the South. And of all ironies, this get-together was held on July 4th!!! Right, no white redneck numb nut wants to learn any history that does NOT characterize all white folks below the Mason-Dixon line as redneck numb nut traitors. In America, it seems that the most gullible demographic always consists of lower and middle class blue collar whites. Back in the day, these boys fought and died so that wealthy plantation owners could keep their slaves. And today, they send checks to Donald Trump – a rich brat from up north! – so that he can keep his money, stay out of jail, keep breaking the law, and be their president. I can imagine what those plantation owners were yelling and screaming: They’re not coming after my slaves – they’re coming after you! Seems I’ve heard that orange guy whine a similar line.
Don’t forget all those students and teachers in Florida who took to the streets in protest against DeSantis’ education guidelines. Or that recent special election in Florida’s 25 Congressional district where a Democrat won the seat or Jacksonville, Florida’s largest city, electing its first Democratic mayor in decades just last year. Florida isn’t gone just yet!
So the cause of the U.S. civil war was “lavery” or “avery”? Something like that. And hundreds of thousands of southern white men were opposed to the secession and supported the north and democracy? Well, you learn something new every day.
Nobody in history has ever whined as much as Traitor Trump! I can’t understand why his cult members aren’t repelled by such obvious weakness and cowardice. (Traitor Trump’s imbecility and chronic dishonesty repel normal people, of course, but not his cult. But how the hel can they NOT find his whining nails on a blackboard?)
i’ve lived in Florida now for 50 years, but i grew up in the Great State of RI, and RI abolished slavery in 1652…yep 1652…two hundred years before the Civil War…1652! and they could vote
Is it propaganda if facts do not represent the whole truth?
Regarding the 100,000 white, Southern volunteers: Over the course of the war, more than 2 million soldiers enlisted in the Union Army. (Source: Wikipedia – Union Army)
Regarding the Alabama cavalry: More than ten other cavalry regiments participated in Sherman’s March to the Sea. (Source: Wikipedia – Savannah campaign Union order of battle)
I am by no means a Civil War expert, but the facts seemed mis-representative of the whole and so I checked them.
Meanwhile we have people trying to tell us that slavery was good for Black people, that it gave their lives structure and provided them an education. Because, you know, those people just can’t manage that for themselves, I suppose.
Flashback. I remember riding our bikes on US 1 when I was a kid. Sometimes even walking the mile or so to school. Today it’s truly a mess. I-95 isn’t too bad other than rush hour. How long ago you ask? Well, I-95 hadn’t been completed north of the Jacksonville airport yet…
Back in 2020, Ron DeSantis and Rick Scott were duking it out for the title of “worst person in Florida”. Then there was a retirement in DC and they were relegated to a mere tussle for a distant 2nd place. Then there was the 2022 election in Brazil, following which Jair Bolsonaro retired to Florida, and now they’re only contesting the #3 spot. Scott’s most recent proposals in the US Senate, tho, show he’s not giving up without a fight.
I’ve only recently started learning about the violent conflicts between Union supporters and Confederacy supporters within my state, Texas. I think similar things went on in all the Southern states. To oversimplify things somewhat, families that owned big plantations or other businesses that depended on slave labor were pro-Confederate, and small farmers and others who didn’t directly benefit from slavery were pro-Union. In particular, German settlers had the reputation of being against secession and, in many cases, abolitionists.
In other words, the Civil War was as much within each state as it was between states.
Of course, y’all are referring to the secessionists that were the embodiment of the democrat party. You know, the very same party that stood like a ‘Stonewall’ against the Civil Rights act back in ‘65 and championed Jim Crow and their militant provocateurs known as the Ku Klux Klan. Yeah, that very same political party that still exist to this day that, again, seeks to tear this country apart — this time going after our sacred Constitution, our once free and fair electoral system, and with a new militant wing renamed ANTIFA. It’s history repeating itself only rebranded and repurposed. Who knew Trudeau was a Confederate sympathizer?
At one time (between the February and October Revolutions in 1917) Russia had a democratic government, and by the standards currently employed in the Kremlin cellar where @aluminati hangs out with its fellow trolls, they still do, because certainly nothing whatever could possibly have changed in the intervening century.
Just for balance, Joseph “Fighting Joe” Wheeler (September 10, 1836 – January 25, 1906) was a military commander and politician of the Confederate States of America. He was a cavalry general in the Confederate States Army in the 1860s during the American Civil War, and then a general in the United States Army during both the Spanish-American and Philippine–American Wars near the turn of the twentieth century. For much of the Civil War, he was the senior cavalry general in the Army of Tennessee and fought in most of its battles in the Western Theater.Between the Civil War and the Spanish–American War, Wheeler served multiple terms as a U.S. Representative from the state of Alabama as a Democrat. As a Union general he commanded Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders.
We were told that bunk about the Civil War not being about slavery in my day too, but I came home and asked my parents who told me the truth…despite my father being from the South.
You will be sadly interested in the fact that the Gannett newspapers removed this cartoon from their papers. Also, the Chicago Tribune removed the first two panels: ‘slavery’ written on the board and the kid thinking about ratting out the teacher.

Lies on so many levels. Florida does not ban teaching true history – only bans indoctrination of lies: like the 1619 project.
Another lie – that the actions of Trump and January 6th protestors was an "insurrection’ similar to the civil war.
