Maybe Bernice and Luann can put on a hour long Puppet Variety Show? ;)
Bernice has it wrong. If she does tell Luann, she is a bad friend. She gave her word to Piro that she would keep his secret. That either means something or it doesn’t.
.
It’s amazing Luann found a marker that’s the exact shade as her hair color.
The puppet show we’re getting is a lot more interesting than any “wacky” show Luann could have put on for Piro. It also reminds us of the saying, “No good deed goes unpunished.” Bernice would have been better off letting Luann crash and burn with her Wacky Puppet Show. She’s trying to be the friend she has always been for Luann but Piro’s selfishness has put her in a bind. In a way Piro has asked Bernice to fix HIS problem with Luann wouldn’t letting on that he has a problem with Luann.
Bernice you are not a therapist, you are a friend Piro trusts. Shut your mouth, Luann is more concerned about what Piro thinks of her, than Piro himself.
I’m disappointed to see that the words the Evanses have coming out of Luann’s mouth show her as thinking only that Piro was talking about her, and not that Piro has a serious problem that she wants to help him with. Why hate your viewpoint character?
This week has seen a lovely bit of subversion, especially within the context of the Luann strip. Here we have two women arguing over a guy, though unlike in any previous story arcs, neither character is romantically motivated.
Telling Luann to give Piro space wouldn’t be breaking confidentiality if she leaves it at that. This is kind of taking the confidentiality to an extreme when just leaving it at that wouldn’t be wrong.
Luann is absolutely being an immature little so-and-so here. And a bad friend to Bernice. Bernice has made it clear that she can’t talk about what’s going on without breaking Piro’s trust, yet Luann persists.
How would Luann feel in she told Bernice something in confidence, then found out Bernice told someone else?
Can’t Bernice just tell Luann she thinks this is too much and couch it as HER opinion, not Piro’s? Then she hasn’t broken her word and gotten the point across.
Bernice’s first and biggest mistake (said before) was to initially tell Luann (who wanted to know why Piro came over) that Piro told her confidential information. Bern could have cut it off right there (and said that they watched a silent movie). but she had to get in that little bit of one upmanship by saying she knew things but promised not to tell.
Yes! masks are used in the right way, as alter egos! Bernice is having an internal conflict and Luann seems to slowly convincing her to tell her everything. Unfortunately, Luann seems to think that Piro has confided in Bernice something positive about her, not that he finds her continuous attempts to make him laugh annoying. She will be very sad. It’s nice to see that Bernice is afraid of be a bad friend. After years in which she seemed to be with Luann only out of habit, there’s finally a sign that she actually cares about her friendship.
They say curiosity killed the cat. In this case, LuAnn’s curiosity is going to kill a friendship if she doesn’t back-off as Bernice has indicated. Bernice needs to drop the Piro puppet and walk away before she messes up.
Just so everybody is aware, Luann is forcing Bernice to break her HIPPA law. She’s not licensed yet, but she is very much aware of HIPPA. HIPPA is one of the first things you learn in the healthcare field, regardless or what you are studying or working.
What is wrong with just telling Luann, “Piro is going thru some things and needs some space. You and Tara may be well-intentioned but you both need to leave him alone.”
Set aside the whole “therapist” aspect … if this were just friends inter-relating, should Bernice violate one friend’s trust to another? I think not. I know Luann is curious about what was said, but this has gone over-the-top. IMO.
This sequence is very upsetting to me. I know Luann is trying to be a friend, but showing a 19/20 year old trying to help someone who is seriously depressed is just disrespectful in so many ways. It shows Luann is not maturing very well. It shows little regard Piro trying to avoid a serious illness and the fact that his family really needs help to try to organize some type of life schedule for his family. I know other people will have other opinions, but, to me, using puppets in this sequence is not appropriate.
Luann likes Piro and wants to know if he likes her. That’s what she’s digging for, not what his secrets are. “Did he say anything about me? Does he like me?” (Paraphrasing)
I love how the deranged-looking Luann mask is facing forward while the Piro one is in profile so we can see that dumb star he shaves into his hair every morning as a substitute for a personality.
If Luann were allowed to act at all normal, she’d back off and not goad Bernice into telling confidential info Piro trusted her to keep private. But since Lu is like a golden retriever after a bacon treat, that ain’t gonna happen.
Bernice, she won’t listen. Just walk out the door. If Luann loses two friends in one day, maybe she will start asking herself some serious introspective questions. And if not, well, she can just hang out with Shannon. And the strip could convert to The Life and Times of Toni and Brad.
“Piro has issues which neither humor nor adventure can help him with. In fact they might distract him from finding solutions or peace. Your intentions are appreciated.”
The only thing Piro actually said to keep secret were the comments he made about Tara and Luann being too much. He never said to not say anything about his family situation. Bernice could easily tell Luann that Piro is having some tough family issues right now and doesn’t need joking around at this time.
Bernice is only making the situation worse with her comments. She is letting Luann think there is some big secret she is being kept out of. Bernice could simply say that Piro has some personal family issues that he is dealing with right now and is not in the mood to be cheered up.
If someone tells you a secret do NOT tell others that you have a secret you can’t tell them. That is what 5 year olds do. Of course it will only make them want to know the secret.
Using puppets as a prop to reveal things to someone who may have trouble saying to a real person is an old therapy method, humorously used in these panels, but it’s troubling to me that Lu is using them to force Bern to tell her about what Piro said, believing, selfishly, that it’s about her. I usually defend the main characters, but not in today’s toon. It’s not a good look, at all.
Um, Bernice? You are not a therapist. You’re still a student. You have no license to practice. There is no doctor-patient confidentiality because you are NOT a doctor. You made a promise to a friend, AS a friend. Keeping your word is important. Luann is a pushy nosy person and she ought to accept that some things are not meant to be shared.
