This is the BEST arc this strip has had in a very long time! I’m really impresses how Shannon is growing out of being a destructive brat into a talented and contributing young lady! Now, I hope there’s no regression!
So we have a pretty clear indication of the story of Dog and Fish being allegory about Luann and Bernice. But could it also be allegory about Shannon (Leia) and Bernice (Darth)? Or, more generally, about Shannon and most grown-ups most of the time? Or could it just be about Puddles and Monstro? Then again, perhaps Puddles and Monstro could be allegory for all sorts of things. Maybe the alternative title for Dog Friend, Fish Friend should be All I Need to Know I Learned from Puddles and Monstro. Has kind of a nice ring to it, don’tcha think?
This is so beautiful. a child’s wisdom drawn showing such sincere love and creativity. On we thing that I want to point out all traits they hate in characthers Luannverse in general but I foxus on the story, the humor and the wisdom the strip shows. Luann and Bern aaare opposites but like and love eaxh as Best Friends for life. All the nitpicking or intense need to troll is a right here, but the trolling completely misses the point.
There’s always a catch… However one thing we all can agree on… We ALL ❤️❤️❤️ Our Be❤️ed Ann❤️Eiffel AND, of course, Our Be❤️ed All American Patriot and Spiritual Leader… The❤️Count! BTW… the dog and fish cartoon was pretty cool but Shannon Daytona should go back to the pole at her strip club on the highway out by the airport. TTFN And a Big Shout Out and Happy Birthday to Professional Wrestler, The Sheik. Dilly Dilly and Boy Howdy. Count… OUT!
I have no doubt that Luann likes Bernice, that she takes care of her when she’s in crisis, that she always supports her even at the cost of sacrifices and always forgives her when she does something bad. It’s whether Bernice feels the same for her that I have doubts about. Maybe Bernice’s smile today is sincere and I’m in the wrong, judging her to be a terrible friend and an annoying person. I wonder if Shannon’s story will end with a general hug tomorrow, with Puddles and Monstro looking on it happily.
Hmm. To me, this “Shannon” arc and the previous “Luann Makeover” arc suggest to me that either Greg or Karen or both have been reading the comments here (and perhaps at the other site). And, these two arcs suggest that G&K specifically wrote these SPECIFICALLY to address the often proclaimed comments of:
1) Luann is “boring”. Luann is no longer important to the comic. Luann is has no drive, no focus, no etc.
2) Luann & Bernice could not be friends in real life. Luann and Bernice are horrible together, etc.
For me, as I NEVER agreed with the above two sets of comments, I am HAPPY to see these comments addressed by G&K in this way. Bravo! While these two arcs may not have been the most exciting arcs the authors have created…. each has served a valuable purpose, IMO.
Each of the last two arcs has established that:
1) Luann may not “have it all figured out” but that she is a great, dynamic person with lots of potential.
and
2) Even though Bernice and Luann DO have different personalities….. both are great characters…. and both have a deep, real friendship with each other regardless of personality differences.
Oh My Gawd! Can this be any more NAUSEATING?? Luann and Bernice have always been FINE. Their relationship (with all it’s quirky differences) has always worked and they didn’t need a “kumbaya moment” courtesy of the new, suddenly mature and insightful Shannon (BLECH!) Next I suppose it will be hugs and kisses all around, just to really seal the deal. I for one find this whole story line to be incredibly condescending and unnecessary. They need to get rid of Shannon…permanently. There’s already one goody goody guru in the strip.
G&K should learn the old lesson – “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.
I suppose it’s nice to be told that Bernice likes Luann. You know what’d be better though? If G&K followed the rule of “show, don’t tell” and had Bernice actually demonstrate through her actions that she likes Luann. Because from the way she treats her, I don’t see much besides contempt. One smile doesn’t make up for years of shoddy treatment.
Why is this a metaphor for Luann and Bernice? This storyline sure didn’t start out this way. If it had started with Luann and Bernice fighting, I’d get it. But it was originally just that Bernice didn’t want to babysit.
Also, I feel like between this and “Luann is proudly a blank slate,” this strip has been engaging in a lot of defensive “this strip is FINE THE WAY IT IS!” lately.
This character incongruity really makes me nuts. Shannon, the adolescent who still slurs a few words and doesn’t understand “big words” is suddenly an enlightened, well spoken, insightful, parable writing genius. Next we’ll see Brad change into a cheating husband, or Steffanie will be named valedictorian. Maybe Gunther can grow his hair and join a commune, or Les could earn a scholarship to an ivy league school. TJ could decide he much prefers working with tools instead of cooking and opens a car repair shop and Dez could sue all her humanitarian projects for unpaid wages. Go for it!
I don’t think Shannon was aware at the time of writing that dog and fish are a parallel for Luann and Bern. The project got started after Bern’s initial comment about sitting quietly and reading a book which Shannon did not want to do because (as she said) she was more into imagination, followed by Bern’s comment about books being full of imagination. So I think Shannon got started with the idea of Bern as fish and herself as dog. The story (of course) is a great metaphor for Bern and Luann (other relationships too) but I don’t think Shannon was thinking about that on reading her story out loud. But it doesn’t matter.
