    In “Down and Out in Paris and London”, one of Aldous Huxley’s lesser-known works, he described how waiters in Paris restaurants would heat the customers coin change red-hot on the griddle before delivering it to the table. It was too hot to pick up and few customers felt like waiting around to collect it.
