I don’t know . . . personally, I understand where Luann’s coming from . . . I mean, I’ve faced tons of disappointment, hardships, and crises all throughout my life, and honestly, I do find it difficult to find good in anything – especially now that the country is basically doomed. My personal philosphy has been it’s better to expect the worst and be pleasantly surprised, than to get your hopes up and face disappointment; everyone says it makes me negative and pessmistic, I think it makes me realistic.

Upbeat people find good in everything. It’s just in their nature. That could be annoying sometimes. Luann, you have to FIND the good. LOOK for it. Change your worldview.

Nothing wrong with having a lot of questions as long as you actively seek the answers, Lu.

Just read a lot more. BOOKS I mean.

And I believe the late Great Kurt Vonnegut’s once said that people who aspire to be writers should “write like crazy,” every chance they get.

Perhaps You can start by writing satirical, sometimes incendiary comments to this Strip each and every day. ;-)

PS: Vonnegut’s Cat’s Cradle, GREAT book. And Ice-Nine, a delightfully insidious idea.

Why’d you have to go and make things so complicated?

I see the way you’re acting like you’re somebody else

    Gets me frustrated

I think Luann’s reaction is exactly what you would expect from a teenager her age. Full of questions, doubts and fears. Maybe Mrs. Horner has always been this positive, maybe she became this way after years of deep considerations. I hope that talking to her mentor can help Luann deal with the negative thoughts and moments in her life.

I knew a lady who was a real life Mrs. Horner. She was 96 years old and a former teacher. If there was ever a social event or a family reunion, there was literally a line of people waiting to talk to her. She was always upbeat and smiling and I never heard anyone say a negative thing about her, nor did I ever hear a disparaging word about anyone come from her mouth. She sure seemed to be a picture of health, but no one would ever know one way or another because she never, ever complained about anything in her life, you just heard her say how fortunate she was to have led the life she lived and was happy to see everyone…and somehow always directed the conversation to hear all the good things in their lives.

I also knew someone who always had something to complain about. Regardless of how much you tried to brighten her day, she would have none of it as she would find something that wasn’t right, and would genuinely resent if you pointed out something positive. I was surprised when she told me one time that she “hated going to gatherings because no one talks to me.” She truly had no idea of the effect of her constant complaining had on other people, nor why they would avoid her for her want of sharing such misery.

It’s my hope to be a Mr. Horner in other peoples’ lives :0)

The Euthyphro dilemma is a philosophical problem that questions whether morality is created by God or is independent of God. It appears in Plato’s dialogue Euthyphro, where Socrates asks Euthyphro, “Is the pious loved by the gods because it is pious, or is it pious because it is loved by the gods?” This is the convention used in the second panel.

This is, to me, the classic older experienced with life, and all its trails and tribulations, mentoring a 20’s something about life. The Serenity Prayer comes to mind, Luann is a very typical 19-20 year old woman, and Mrs, Horner is Lte 70’s early 80’s mentor. we all should be for the confused 19 or 20 somethings in our lives, Whether they want to or not a bit of mentoring is great.

My health is bad, I have no job, but you know what? I have Jesus. I have a God that still takes care of me. I’m alive, I have a roof over my head, I have food, I have clothing, and I have a good family. And by family I mean all my friends, my loved ones, my church family. I can sit and moan and groan about all the bad things that have happened, but it doesn’t fix things. Instead I listen to some good old Southern Gospel, and I pray. And I read the comics!!!
