Okay, first of all, I am so relieved to see this is still going on four weeks later, and that it wasn’t just another meaningless 1-2 week intermission from the never-ending Moony U. soap opera; this little arc has actually been taking us places, which is great.
Second of all . . . what is Bernice even talking about?
Though I don’t like the blood donation for Christmas, I am happy that Luann gave Bernice waffles.Just what did she mean, “I’m not like the other girls”?
About forty years ago I used to get gas money by selling plasma. Come forward about another 25 years and I find myself unemployed and decide to look into doing the same.
Some time between the two I had a small mole removed from the side of my neck that they told me was malignant, but since they figured they got it all and if they didn’t it would have to grow back from just a couple of cells, and since I knew I was prone to it I could keep an eye on things and catch it if it returned. It never did.
But now, because I have a record of having once had skin cancer, I’m no longer eligible to donate blood or blood products (even though you can’t spread it to other people that way if you do still have it).
So maybe Bernice had something similar taken care of that makes her ineligible. Or maybe at some point she had hepatitis, or she’s on some meds that would show up in the donation.
Rather than this I would have liked to have seen Luann actually giving her own blood, perhaps with Phil on the next bed. Some people have quite an issue with needles. I’m one took me a while to come around to doing my own insulin injections. And I never watch the nurse collect blood samples or start IVs. I love how my dentist injects novacaine. He grabs my cheek, pinches it so I don’t feel the needle go in. OK, maybe TMI. But I’d like to see Luann doing something and not just talk about it.
I still believe Bernice is nothing but a made-up character in Luann’s mind. Just like Fight Club. Go ahead and pretend that wouldn’t be awesome if true,
Luann’s commitment is admirable and I hope she’ll becomes a regular blood donor. Unfortunately, if Bernice is anemic, even if she eats more she still won’t be able to donate blood. But it’s funny how quick Luann is to respond to her BFF. As if she already knew Bernice would say no.
When our dear friend was dying of Leukemia, she held a bone marrow donor sign-up party. I must admit I was relieved when I reached the age of 60, which was the age we were told was the upper limit for that kind of transplant.
This is so STUPID! First, why should her parents have to do anything at all to get help from their freeloading bimbo daughter? And why does Luann have the nerve to try to talk people into doing something she isn’t willing to do herself? G&K insist on keeping Luann infantile, selfish, and self-centered. She’s BORING.
Why is Bernice putting herself in a group with other young women? She is nothing like the “other” young women. The only one she can compare with is Luann, who is the opposite side of Bernice’s coin.
Wow, so not only are Luann’s lazy Christmas gifts conditional this time around, but they require the recipient to do something Luann wasn’t willing to do herself. I guess it really is possible to be a scumbag in service to a good cause.
You shouldn’t pressure people to give blood. They may be have a good reason for not giving blood that they don’t want to admit publicly. You don’t want them to cave to peer pressure and give blood anyway. Work places used to have competitions for donations, and people who shouldn’t give blood did. So most places shut down those competitions. (I can’t give because my oncologist said not to. But people will still tell me “Oh, give anyway, it will be okay.”)
Wow…given the topic, that must have been quite the strip. Most wouldn’t touch religion or same-gender relationships. Unless you’re talking about comic books, which have taken on much more adult topics in the past couple of decades.
Come on Bernice, you want to get into a helping profession, I think Lu’s humorous waffle gambit is something that points out that if all 4 contribute blood could save up to 12 lives, per the stats., that Phil noted last week. If not for my own health status I might contribute and I encourage others here to consider it.
Maybe Bernice has a medical condition where she can’t donate blood. I know sometimes my iron levels have been to low and I’ve been disqualified (at least for then).
Silly Frank! He acts like it would actually happen, and considering that it would take Luann 45 minutes to understand what she was being required to do, that makes it a very cheap gift
That is a terrible gift! It is like making a donation in someone’s name to a cause you support. A good gift is something the receiver wants, not what the giver wants. Luann is pretty selfish. She should be the one donating blood, but that does not seem to be the case.
Bernice may be afraid of needles….but as a psychology major, she should realize that that’s an irrational fear and a small price to pay to help save some lives.
It is an odd comment. Could be weight. I heard nurses suggest to women who had low iron levels to eat a spoon of raisins each day to increase iron levels.
I hadn’t thought of it until someone brought up the issue of weight. Bernice may need to gain a little weight before being eligible (to donate blood), hence Luann is putting two waffles on her plate.
I’m just glad that people are arguing about blood donations and not the content. If this plotline encourages a few people to donate blood or plasma, that’s a positive. (Hmm, if eight people responding to this thread donate, that’s one gallon.)
I get it but, to ask for something in order to receive something is just wrong. And I am not just talking about the comic, I am talking about real life.
I kind of hate the whole “give a coupon instead of a gift” thing. Nothing wrong with giving your time and all but she could have saved back enough to get her loved ones a little something! Even on a budget you can save back all year for Christmas.
My guess is “I’m not like other girls” is just lazy writing to escape saying anything more specific. The awkward emphasis on “girls” (instead of “people”) is unnatural. If you mean something normal like “I’d love to donate, but I have low blood pressure” or whatever, just say so. If you mean she’s not a girl at all, then let’s get into that plotline stat!
This is what the Luann Facebook Page post for this strip states: “This strip is a mystery but wasn’t meant to be: the line Greg penned for Bernice was not “I’m not like the other girls” but “I don’t weigh enough,” referring to the fact that 110 lbs. is the minimum weight to donate blood. The change in wording can be credited to a freak mixup in the post-production process. Mystery (sort of) solved.”

It’s a nice thought, Luann, but.. if they don’t want to donate blood then you wouldn’t get them any presents at all? That’s a little messed up.
So let me guess, they’ll use their “hour of labor” to get Luann to clean up her room?? ;)

I can see it now. Luann convinces/ bribes others into giving blood but doesn’t do it herself.

Somebody better not post Luann’s offer on the Internet. She could be committed to a lifetime of labor with no pay.

Whassamattah, Bernice? Giving blood to help others is beneath you? And why does Luann feel that her parents have to be bribed to be donors?

Christmas can bring out the worst in people. Some people get depressed. Some get greedy. Luann? She becomes selfish.
But then again, isn’t she always like that?

I used that line on a phlebotomist in the hospital, and when an RN came to the house to draw my blood. They looked like they wanted to stick me again.

I believe the restriction on donating blood if you lived in Europe in the 80s has been lifted.
