Rosa: "Well, I got accepted you Yale"
Bernice: "Yale is HUGE. We should be leaping for joy, right?"
Delta: "Yet Rosa's on the edge of tears"
Luann: "So what are we doing? Leaping? Weeping? What?"
Is it because she got accepted?… Is it because she got accepted, and it’s her dream school, and it’s 3,000 miles away from Moony (Gunther) U?… Is it because she is torn between Yale and S. America (Peru, Ecuador Volunteering)?…. Is it because it won’t matter, as she’s still planning on leaving the country to help in other lands?…. – So sad to think about! Maybe if it were not something too bad, after all… perhaps it’s only because she hoped to have them in her “March Madness” bracket, but they “choked” at the buzzer…..or maybe she realized something like they wouldn’t have her favorite brand of mustard there… yeah… that’ll do it…
You CAN’T get into the PEACE CORPS unless you ALREADY have a DEGREE! She can enter the Peace Corps after she’s finished with Yale. And re: Gunther: would she give up Yale for that ONE KISS from Gunther?
“Brought to you” by…Cliff’s Hangers… “And now, it comes with an exciting new feature!…….” – The Columbus-O-Matic… “Comes with portable, adjustable seat belt strap, and ‘chair seat extender’… Never worry about falling off of the edge, again!… From Plotz’ Devices, Inc….” - and by…Kammel- Drama Daries, Inc… “Maximizing dairy freshness… just for you!”…
If Rosa’s family can swing it, financially, she should go to Yale. with Skype, E-Mail, and VOIP, etc. staying “in touch” with Gunther wouldn’t be a problem. That said, Gunther needs to make it clear’ Where they stand’ AND ’Where he wants this to go.
Many Girls waited “at home” while the Guy want off to school to secure a future for the both of them. It DID work sometimes (My Mom and Dad for example.) But it was the letters from home, the visits, and a CLEAR understanding of what they were BOTH working toward that made it manageable. Also Family support is a necessity. My Dad’s Sister was Mom’s best friend and kept things “on track” a time or two. That’s why she’s my God-Mother.
Here’s hoping Gunther and Rosa are strong enough to see it through.
Maybe Gunther should re-consider? If he goes to Yale to be with Rosa, he might be miserable when he discovers they are going to meet very rarely because of the vast difference in majors… ;)
“Surely Gunther has the grades to get into Yale if he were to apply.”Perhaps Gunther COULD have gotten into Yale, but isn’t it too late to apply for Fall? MAYBE Spring or next year. The strip clearly states prom in one month, so strip time is about sync with us.
Nah, debt’s not a factor in her sadness. She can pay it as she goes with family wealth or pay it off quickly with future earnings. Most likely Rosa is looking at what she’s about to lose: close circle of friends, youth, simple life.
I give her 2 weeks at Yale before the Gunther-Rosa relationship is ancient history. She will meet guys who are much more adventurous, like her. Gunther has just been her “default” boyfriend at Pitt, since he was the school’s “brainy guy”. Now that she will be surrounded by brainy guys, Gunther has no role to play in her life. And thus it goes, with the majority of high school romances…
Let’s clear up a few misconceptions about Yale, shall we?
“…then they can live in married student housing”
Yale only has housing for married GRAD students.
“…then she’ll be surrounded by brainy guys”
Um, how many Yale students have you MET? Yes, there’s a higher percentage of “brainy” there than on the average street corner, but “surrounded”? No. They have lots of reasons why they accept students, and only one of them is “brainy.” (I had a friend on an Ivy admissions committee, who shared with me.)
“She’s in the 1%”
Like almost all the Ivies these days, the only people who can afford to go there are those with uncountable amounts of money, and those with none. If Rosa’s family is poor enough, pretty much all they;ll have to pay for is her transportation. It’s people who have some money and aren’t willing to give all of it to the school (i.e., almost all of us reading this) who can’t afford to go or send kids there.
To our younger readers: Your parents are wiser than you, most of them want what is good for their children. Take their advice into serious consideration.*Then do/go where YOU think is best! It is your life, and your goals and plans probably are different from that of your parents.*On the other hand, your parents may be paying for part of your education. If so, at least give their idea a chance and try it for a year or two. Then transfer/change majors.*Rosa, the G-man is crazy for you. He’ll wait a year or two if necessary. And the Peace Corps will benefit if you have a year or two of college first. These senior year decisions are important, but they can be changed!
I knew Rosa was a LOCK to get into YALE! I wonder if she’ll earn her MASTERs eventually; She’ll likely be studying hard with others of her ILCo. I trust she’ll earn high MARKS there.…..Well sorry! I get KEYED up when I start punning…….
Rosa should go to Yale and major in political science or economics, and she should study as much as she can about South America. She can probably enroll in programs to spend summers, and maybe a semester or more of an academic year, doing course work in Peru or Ecuador. Then when she joins the Peace Corps, she will have an excellent background for understanding the culture and getting things done there._In any case, Rosa has no reason to continue her relationship with Gunther (or with any of her other Pitt HS classmates, for that matter). She can therefore vanish into the ether with Aaron Hill. Maybe Gunther will find a much more timid girlfriend at Muni, with whom he can discuss fabrics and sewing, and who will be thrilled with a single kiss each year.
She can’t be sad about leaving Gunther. Everything she gets from him now she can get through Skype and email. He can’t go to Yale. Gunther would never be so far away from his mommy. Maybe Rosa is sad because she did not get into Princeton or Harvard.
> Why would Rosa go to a school costing her ~250k if she’s going to be doing volunteer work afterwards? >I doubt that Rosa will serve in the Peace Corps for the rest of her life. After she does her stint with them, she may move on to working for the State Department, the World Bank, or some private company engaged in development in South America. Her Yale degree will be helpful to her in pursiubg those same goals in her later life, likely more than one from Moony Uni would be (and certainly more than none at all would be).
-Just as long as Mr. Evans buys it.-My hope is that Mr. Evans retires and hands the strip over to Karen while Luann is attending Community College. Karen, I hope, will let Luann mature enough to learn that she doesn’t have to live her life around a guy, at the same time that she meets a guy at the Community College who values both career and homelife. -Too much to hope for, probably.
> The payoff is the connections you can easily make in the world of business and law. >Rosa may well find business or law (or both) to be excellent avenues for continuing her work on economic development in South America, after she leaves the Peace Corps.
Rosa is conflicted. Yale is prestigious, if that means anything to her, but it’s far from Gunther and all her high school friends, and it’s not the Peace Corps.Maybe it’s just her exit from the regular cast, as Howard may be for Delta. The transition to college is an opportunity for a “Reset” of the strip….
Very insightful comment, Sisyphos. I seldom comment here anymore because Luann has so many comments that I can’t read them all.
I agree that we all know many people who surprise us by maturing better than they appeared when young. And there are many of us who were underappreciated in our youth who have a nice life.
In any case, I continue to read the comic and read the first page + some of the “last posted”. I’ll be watching to see how Greg handles the various characters (Rosa and Gunther could be a good future thread, at least for variety).
She’s smart enough to know that when she graduates from Yale, she will be about $250,000 in debt, which will prevent her from doing any public interest job. She will have no choice but to sign on as an investment banker, or some other high income job. The peace corp or any other humanitarian or public interest career is out of the question.
Ten posters on the ArcaMax site think Rosa is unhappy because going to Yale means a separation from Gunther. I wonder if they know something I don’t know?
I wouldn’t be so sure Gunther hasn’t been accepted to Yale also, and just hasn’t opened his envelope yet. When he and Rosa were talking about future plans and Rosa said her parents wanted her to go there, Gunther said "maybe I could apply to Yale’
> Universities, libraries, hospitals, and major airports will be named for him.>Patrons of the Gunther Berger Library should be aware that the library’s lobby is decorated with a life-sized painting of its founder, nude.
Well, New Haven, CT is an pit, but if Gunther goes to Rhode Island School of Design they see each other on weekends! . Or maybe she is hungry for an adventurous gap year and is worried her ‘rents won’t approve.
Can’t get accepted anywhere if you don’t apply. So she must have applied. What was she thinking then? ‘Just want to see if I can do it.’ ’I’m sure I won’t get in but it doesn’t hurt to try.’ ‘Gunther isn’t treating me with affection – I want to go far away.’ Moral: Be careful what you ask for – you just might get it.
I dunno. Maybe she sees Gunther as the closest thing she can get to the Peace Corp while she lives here, and considers her going out with him to be charitable work, designed to make a man out of Gunther.

There is an old solution that would work: Rosa could marry Gunther and they could live in married housing.
Yes, that’s so “pre-2000” and obsolete thinking.
