To move or not to move, that is the question. Whether tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings, and arrows of moving houses or to take arms against a sea of troubles, and by opposing… Um… Do something?
Maybe there will be an even better sunspot and a window with a better view in the Big Pink house. How will you feel if you look over and see a new cat in your old window?
The sunspot will move with you, Sophie. The window, though, will probably miss you as much as you’ll miss it. But I’m sure the BPH has a welcoming window that you’ll grow to love.
I was maudlin earlier, and now my screen clouded up. Sophie needs a new mission. Maybe she can seek out new sunspots and new civilized clowders. And boldly go where few cats have gone before.
Oh sweet Sophie, it is hard. But take it from one who has moved many times, you will thrive if you adjust your attitude. Take some time to appreciate and regret the old, but then adjust your sight forward and anticipate new adventures and new artistic possibilities. (I do hope there will be a good window or two in the new ground floor apartment and/or that she can visit the other apartments too. Puck seems to have a particularly good window for watching birds, leaves and postal personnel.)
It occurs to me that they can’t be talking about this Big Pink House: https://www.dmagazine.com/home-garden/2017/03/teardown-for-former-home-of-mary-kay-ash/
In the last panel it almost seems as if Sophie is about to break into song. Do not worry, the braided rug will go to the Big Pink House, and it has windows aplenty. Still, it is hard to let go of the familiar. Perhaps, as someone suggested recently, a familiar character will buy this house so Sophie can keep track of her window.
Oh, Sophie, once you get that butter on your paws you’ll wonder what you were so worried about!
(Note: People have been telling other people to butter their cat’s paws when moving house for literally 600+ years. The jury’s out on whether or not it works. Personally, I think that folks just like to butter their cats.)
Poor Sophie. Sad and anxious. I understand. I recently sold a house that had been mine for 32 years. I cried when I knew I wouldn’t go home there again.
Oh, Sophie, the BPH has a lot of windows for looking outside and lots of sun coming in for sun puddles. I understand your sadness at leaving your home, though.
Sophie is a true artiste – she has a sensitive soul and deeply ponders these things – this most likely will lead to one or more pieces of compelling art!
It appears that Sophie’s not just concerned about herself, but that her beloved sunspot on the rug and the sitting-window will miss having their cat companion. Being highly territorial creatures, cats take the role of guardians of places.
I’m also getting vibes of Neil Diamond’s “Brooklyn Roads”:
I feel for you, Sophie… I’m contemplating a move after 24 years in the same place and despite being kind of miserable here for about a quarter of that time it’s still a tough go…. Hang in there, little kitty-
This is heartbreaking, but I think that Sophie will soon realize that the BPH is going to be a vast combination of old friends, and new ideas and lots of new art supplies to bring those ideas to life. She will find another window and another sunspot for the braided rug, and will thrive in her new environment. And we’ll get to share the experiences with her!
Poor kitty – hopefully your rug will find a new home with an even better sunspot. And you will find a new window – and your window will find a new kitty!
I understand, Sophie. I had a couple of houses I rented that I hated leaving but had to due to job relocation. (And in one case the new owner deciding to raise the old house. Sad) Leaving places you love is hard. Your new home will be great, but you will still miss your old one.
I understand this feeling as i’m also getting ready to move and hav elived in my house my whole life (At 31.. I know, I know). I’ve matured about i but i’ts still hard to let go and I feel so bad for her. THe move is a GOOD thing.. but it’s a lot for her. Also what the heck is breading? It’s come up in this strip before and I don’t get it since my cat didn’t do that.
Also Tommy.. I love you man and you mean well but while you share a friend group… it’s diffrent. Your close to the main trio, having been in this strip since early (I’m working on a series retrosepctive and I was shocked to remember (despite only having binged the strip a few months back) that Tommy was the first recurring cat character and the only major one for year one (Las Gatos would get a proper introduction the following year). You have a long history of friendship with all three of them and are especially close with Lupin and Elvis, and had a nice run in with Goldie where you got her to the big pink house in the first place after the racoon incident. And while the kids are new to you, your an extrovert who makes friends easy and it only took so long with Elvis because.. well he’s elvis.
Sophie.. is introverted. It took a LOT to get her to participate in tusslemania and actually socalize. She’s friends with all of them and seems to relate to elvis (why I ship them despite only having interacted once), but being an indoor cat and not part of the news she’s only really ever interacted with the group at parties or when you spotlight her on your news segments. It’s GOOD she can get to know them better and get out of her shell, but it’s not the big selling point it is for you.
Oh, Sophie, honey . . . ::hugs:: I just want to cuddle her and pet her ‘til she’s calm, and tell her the new place will be just as nice or nicer. And she’ll have a sunspot on her rug again, and a new favorite window.

Indeed. If Sophie is not there to sit in the window, then who will? And a favorite sun spot can be a glorious thing.

Anna Kendrick and others: Cups
I packed the boxes for the journey ahead,
I’m gonna live with my best friends,
But I’m not sure of what I’m leaving behind,
It feels like so much is coming to an end.
…….
When I’m gone, when I’m gone,
I’m gonna miss this when I’m gone!
I’m gonna miss my sunspot rare,
I’m gonna miss it everywhere,
I’m gonna miss it when I’m gone!
…….
When I’m gone, when I’m gone
I’m gonna miss this when I’m gone!
I’m gonna miss my window view,
How will it be? I have no clue,
But I’m gonna miss this when I’m gone!
…….
I’ve got my boxes packed for the journey ahead,
I’m not really sure just what awaits,
But I have all my Orb friends,
And I know they’ll be there then,
And I know as usual they’ll be great!
…….
When I’m gone, when I’m gone,
I’m gonna miss this when I’m gone!
I’m gonna miss my sunspot rare,
I’m gonna miss it everywhere,
I’m gonna miss it when I’m gone!
…….
When I’m gone, when I’m gone
I’m gonna miss this when I’m gone!
I’m gonna miss my window view,
How will it be? I have no clue,
But I’m gonna miss this when I’m gone!

After she goes, she’ll miss her window sill for peeping
After she goes, she’ll miss her warm sun spot for sleeping
But where they’re going, Tommy says things are gonna be great and so
Life will be a breeze, you know
She really should be glad
But she’s bluer than blue, sadder than sad
Missing her old life, thinking change is gonna be bad
Sweet Sophie is heart-breakingly

Meanwhile, Back on the Nile
Sophititi: I feel like I should make a special project for Iggy and Ora.
Maat-Tilda: What sort of objects would you like to use?
Soph: I’m not sure. I think I’d like to include something about the sea for Iggy, and maybe something gymnastic related for Ora.
Tillie: I think you could use one of Lupinium’s worn out tumbling mats. You know how he goes through them so quickly.
Soph: And maybe I could add some sea shells to represent the sea.
Enter Tabith-Isis
Tillie: Hi, Tabs! We’re just talking about Sophie’s making a special art project to honor Iggy and Ora.
Tabs: I can contribute some red dots. I just found an extra bag from an unknown source.
Agnes-Ata: (Having just shown up out of nowhere.) We can help, and I would like to introduce to the legendary Procurer from Japan, Nezumi-San.
Soph: How did you get here from such a great distance, Nezumi-San?
Agnes and Nezumi-San: We’ll never tell!

There’s a world where I can go
And tell my secrets to
In my room
In my room
In this world I lock out
All my worries and my fears
In my room
In my room
Do my dreaming and my scheming
Lie awake and pray
Do my crying and my sighing
Laugh at yesterday
Now it’s dark and I’m alone
But I won’t be afraid
In my room
In my room
In my room, in my room
In my room, in my room
