Well, if Dez isn’t concerned about Stef paying her back.. why should Tiff and Kip be?
Clearly, Dez does not have any financial worries. Is it because her family is well off or is she growing certain things and selling certain things to keep her flush with $$ ??
.
So where is Bets? I’m sure she’d have something to say about all this.
G&K played the pot/not card once before with the magic brownies. So I doubt that what in the bag is pot. But even a one day implication that is pot is not a good direction for “Luann.”
Well if Luann is situated in CA then it is a possibility that Dez makes her coin by running a dispensary, all good and legal. Of course one has to be mega-wealthy to start one of those franchises up so this would imply that Dez has money to burn. On the other hand, if she has a bag of medicinal shrooms or peyote then she is treading into a gray area (and we are not talking about Al Grey’s area of expertise, at least I hope not).
Yup, no doubt that’s some sort of harmless, relaxing tea. Greg and Karen must be having a grand old time watching you guys constantly assume the worst about their characters.
Oh no! Now Dez has become the one called “Shoog” by Stef! It’s the symbol of total ruin! I like how shocked Tiffany and Kip are. Seeing them talk they seem to get along really well, maybe as a couple they would make more sense than Stef and Kip. However, questionable as it is, in the end it’s Dez’s money and she does what she wants with it. maybe that tea she’s offering could cost the same amount she gave Stef.
I want Earth Mother Dez to loan the money, never see it again, and then need it for something really important like copayments on doctor’s bills. Of course, unlike Stef, she has people who love her, so she wouldn’t go without in that situation either. Which I guess is her point, it’s no skin off her nose if Stef doesn’t repay. But I don’t see her doing anybody a kindness by enabling the monster in their midst.
“The universe is abundant.” What, Dez just gave Steph some ‘funny money’?Had a guy come into our church thrift store several years back and tried to pay with Stage Money which was printed right on it.
An oz of quality weed (legal) in California is $260. According to https://www.statista.com/statistics/589688/medical-marijuana-prices-by-state/ California has the cheapest weed in the country. However sales without a license is a misdemeanor -6 months in jail.
I’m reminded what I told my husband’s (entitled) nephew when he was in his late teens/early twenties: “People aren’t doing you any favors by giving you what you want.”
Stef already has the money. She is not going to sign anything now. And Kips can’t make her do anything. If he could he would have his money back from 2 years ago.
I like that Tiff is in business mode and Kip is supporting her. Steph’s reaction seems to celebrate that she got her way, again. As for Dez’s donation to the cause, I’m surprised she has $600 in cash available immediately and stashed in the dorm. Thinking the bag has that ultra expensive dung tea. Ugh!
They’re pretty much begging the reader to go “Oh… weed.” But yeah, this being Luann, watch it be “trail mix” or something with plausible deniability like obviously edibles. If GnK trying to see how far they can go with pushing the envelope, I hope they know by now the editors are completely asleep. They didn’t ask you to modify Shannon using a term like “boy-juices,” I’m pretty sure that you could get away with being more blatant than you could in the 1990s when they still paid attention and gave pushback.
Stef will not pay the money back and Dez may just forget she even gave her the money. Stef will surely want more money and if Dez says No, Stef will call her selfish.
Notice the budding relationship between the boyfriend and the spoiled blonde chick. Such relationships based in a mutual sharing of hate may be more stable than those based in ephemeral love.
I once went on a call to an elderly woman who had several checks signed by her, but obviously made out in someone else’s handwriting. One was $250, one was $750, and one was $10,000! After some investigation, we tracked down the guy who had paperwork showing he had done work for her. He had a simple contract stating that the $10K was an interest free loan, repayable one year from the date of issue. When we brought him to her house, she remembered him. He knew she would forget all about it. The work he had done was shoddy, but nothing actionable. We told him to save his pennies, because we were giving a copy of the loan paper to her attorney, so he could collect it for her.
Boy, let the misdirection plays fly. I didn’t look at the last panel last night so I just assumed it was money, but I can see that is not the case (unless it’s money you can pour water on and voila!). Now I see it’s more likely tea (my projection, or pot, also mine); it’s probably something supposed to relax one she has. Either way it enhances the mystery of Dez, while doing nothing for the obvious shallowness of Steph. Tiffany and Kip make an interesting couple, but no I think it’s a total non-starter.
Wow the readers here are (to me) obviously very conservative, or at the very least, old fashioned, for the most part. “Must be weed,” “Must be mushrooms,” “Ooooh! ( CLUTCHING PEARLS) must be illicit drug normalizing and sexual debauchery,” “She must be dealing.”
Always ready to assume the worst of everything.
Really rather sad. And I bet a lot of you have nice homes, money in the bank, and reasonable health, but still spend a lot of your time being miserable.
Surveys show only about 2% of teenagers read the newspaper and I doubt very many more read Luann online so I doubt a little weed will corrupt American youth. On my street of 40 houses about 3 get the local Austin paper and 3 get the NYT (no comics) and all of them are 50+ no children.
A neighbor used to fly marijuana in from Belize. Since his illegal source of income would’ve been obvious, he generously gave much to others but he buried most of his income in PVC pipes. Hurricane Ivan came through while he was in prison and removed many of the landmarks he needed to find his treasure. Now he’s dead from cancer and most of his earnings are waiting to be discovered. Metal detectors can’t see plastic. Ground penetrating radar might help his widow if Freddy Wayne left any general ideas.
For that matter, old Google satellite photos might do the trick.
GnK have cracked open a door to deep philosophical territory here – wisdom (of the world) vs. sacred* foolishness.
What’s wise and what’s foolish here? A legalistic attempt to recover some money, or generosity freely bestowed? Depends on your point of view. I’d just point to all the families that are destroyed by fights over wills and inheritances.
Will GnK pursue any of this to any depth? HAHAHAHA
*for want of a better word; wisdom “not of this world”
And how much money did Dez really give to Stef? The only clue we have so far are the last two drawings in this arc. In Saturday’ strip, we saw two (2) bills in Dez’s hand. Today, in Stef’s greedy little paw we see three (3) bills. The US doesn’t issue paper currency in either $300 or $200 denominations, and even though a comic strip is fiction, I kind of think that’ll be the same in Luann-land.
Gee… I can’t wait to see how Kip is going to make Stef sign Tiffany’s contract. But it’s nice to know Tiffany is learning something about business. Perhaps her grades have improved now that she is no longer stressed out by a certain gold-digger who was pretending to be pregnant?

Come on, folks. As several people have noted (in whole or in part), back when Dez was new to the strip she was offering panda dung tea to Bernice. This probably isn’t quite as expensive as it was, but I’m sure it’s still outrageous. But it’s real, and it’s just the kind of thing Dez would go for.
