So what sort of help for Piro was Bernice thinking about?

I see Piro is still letting Bernice interfere (ie, “fix”) in his life. And now he’s going to drop the writing class because Luann and Tara are too much, without telling them they’re too much. So much passive-aggression. Since they are in California the best thing he could do is move to New York.

Tell Luann and Tara to back off and create boundaries?

Geezus Bern, LET it go, this is NOT your area. you need to try something different.

Bernice, finally says something that should have been said last Friday, they both need help. Sorry Piro that you had to drop a class because Luann and Tara are trying to either change you are fix you.

Dropping a course he’s already paid for, has already done some work for and likes…just to avoid other students he’ll probably still run into? Clearly he looks for ways to mess himself up…and does need some kind of help.

Prio needs help and CPS is not it.

That’s for sure. The kids have been through enough of a disaster without having the added trauma of having Berince the Merry Muse as their caregiver.

I’m starting to think I might have been wrong about seeing Piro as a sweet Eeyore-type. Now it seems like he’s unloading emotional baggage WAY too much and expecting people to know exactly what he needs and expressing displeasure in them not doing the perfect thing. I’ve had a friend who was emotionally incontinent after only having hung out with her a few times and it was incredibly uncomfortable to feel like she just decided, “yeah, you’ll do as my free therapist.” It’s certainly good to express yourself to your friends but it’s unfair to ask your friend to do that.

And of course this being Bernice is added irony. She’s studying to be a therapist but makes it the central focus of her existence to squash Luann’s ambition and drive. She was also really dismissive of wanting him in her life until he flattered her by calling her a beacon of light which fed her ego and made her put up with him.

The suspicious part of Me says that this was all a clever ploy on Piro’s to CON Bernice into babysitting.

Besides, Bernie has never dealt with kids. At least not that I can remember. Heck, she probably doesn’t even LIKE kids.

The one gal that is GOOD with kids (Thanks to Gunther’s encouragement years ago) is one of the gals you just dissed. Namely, Luann.

Will Bernie offer to let Piro use the “Not Her’s” DeGroot house as “Sanctuary?”

And how long will it be before the DeGroots find out, and have had enough and put them BOTH out? ;-)

That was my suggestion last week… That Bernice can help Piro by babysitting. Otherwise, Bernice needs help anyway.

Let’s see it’s Tuesday’s panels, setting up for Wednesday. One solution would be for all three of the young women help him out with the kids. Practical advice. But I know enough of this strip that my, or others “practical” advice probably has nothing to do with what GnK have in store. “Tomorrow, Tomorrow, Come what may.”

And then Luann enters the scene. But, wait, he can’t stand her.

Piro took Luann and Tara’s attentions as if they were torment. Probably if he had explained to them what was bothering him they would have understood, but he never wanted their help. This is really sad, exaggerated and shows how stressed Piro is by his family situation. Incredibly, it seems that Bernice may actually be able to help him, at least to see that he needs help if he wants to lighten this heavy situation. Let’s hope this is the beginning of Bernice’s change, as well as Piro’s.

So is this where Luann gets the idea and sets up a Daycare service for College students???

Bernice is being honest. Refreshing!

At some point Piro has to make the effort to be honest with his friends and cousin. It’s clear, while their efforts are heavy handed at times they do care about him and he seems to realize that. Thinking he will be pleasantly surprised on their ability to help him if he decides to be more direct with them.

Bernice wants to help as long as it only requires giving advice and there’s no actual helping involved.

Piro should keep going to the writing class regardless of Luann and Tara, but I don’t blame him if he drops it. They’ve been competing for his attention for a while and it does get annoying after a while

I think he could use help from Luann, believe it or not. Babysitting is something she’s actually good at.

Luann could baby sit, if she really wants to help. That’s in her wheelhouse.

Bernice starts babysitting 6 kids – THEY’re the ones that’ll need counselling!

I hope he didn’t come to Bernice just for a babysitter. Who watches the kids while he’s in class? Luann seems to be the one who is good with kids, but he’d have to tell her the situation. Wonder what he’s writing….. about his life? Should be an interesting week.

I know exactly what he’s going through. Mom divorced my dad in 70’s without a plan on how she was going to support us. She expected me to watch my siblings, AND work, AND pay rent at 17, AND miss out on free radiologist training by local hospital while she drank and went out.

It’s interesting that Piro clearly likes Bernice. Look at the smile in the last panel. He finds Luann’s and Tara’s interference just annoying. But Bernice’s interference is irritating, but also amusing.

NO, seriously, SOMEbody needs to help with watching those kids!

He can deal with 6 kids, but he can’t simply talk to Luann and Tara? Just tell them to back off a little. He fled the scene but he did not tell Tara and Luann why. They have no idea what he needs if he won’t tell them.

Such obvious set up questions? Please.

Classic Bernice: loves to tell people that they’re in need of help, but worthless when it comes to actually doing anything useful to help them.

This is worse than Three’s Company. Piro should just tell them why they need to rein it in, not merely sulk away.

Now Piro is going to quit the class that his “jerk” step dad probably paid for (since Piro doesn’t work). That seems in character for Mister Whiny Baby. The bad thing is if he quits the class, what will Luann and Tara occupy themselves with?

And Bernice – you are wrong, it would be THE KIDS who would need help.

Bernice could help by telling LuAnn and Tara to back off. He could choose to sit away from them. Though I doubt they’d take the hint.

I know he doesn’t want to talk, but really the only practical solution is for him to say at least one sentence. “I’m stressed at home, writing is therapeutic for me, I appreciate your help but I don’t need adventures or jokes to get through my day, thanks.” Heck maybe Luann and Tara might even be willing to help look after the kids a little, since they both seem to care about him so much.

Here’s a thought..instead of fleeing the scene at school, how about Piro telling Tara and Luann what’s going on at home like he did Bern. I have a hunch they’d be way less goofy if they knew what he was dealing with. But they never had a chance because he wasn’t talking. Too busy running.

Wait, how is Piro babysitting 6 kids? Whose kids? Did I miss something? I’ve been reading this comic for over 10 years.

Put the kids to work. Things needing doing around the house are often tasks fairly small children can do. They won’t do it as well as you can at first, but performance improves. In my class there were some males who married because they didn’t know how to cook or do other simple tasks and there were females who married because they didn’t realize they could get paying jobs on them own.

As the great Jerry Reed sang:

Eatin’ baloney, askin’ myself

“Why didn’t you just learn to cook?” "

(Don’t gripe at me about his mischaracterization. Personally I like baloney but my beloved doesn’t so we seldom have any. Either she doesn’t like ME cooking or she doesn’t like MY cooking.)

That’s probably the smartest thing you have said Bernice.

Isn’t Luann great with kids? She’s good with Shannon and was working at that daycare for a long while. All the kids there just loved her. I’ll bet having her babysit is part of the solution. She and Bernice could tag-team and help each other. Maybe Tara could help but I doubt she would have the patience.

There’s no reason why Piro can’t carve out some time at home to write. I like the suggestion above about giving all those kids some chores after school.

Just tell Luann and Tara to give you space and start sitting in a different seat. You can tell these stories are not being developed by anyone under 30 even though the characters are.

Bernice has no interest in dealing with kids. No one should be watching those kids who isn’t trained in dealing with a dysfunctional family setting. CPS should be contacted to see what’s going on in that house. This is a comic strip, so there’s no reason that CPS can’t fix it, unlike in the real world.

In the final frame Piro’s face is drawn with more expression than I’ve ever seen. Hard to put my finger on It but he seems to have some life to him.

That was rather unkind of Piro to say. And passive aggressive. Piro could just tell Luann and Tara that he needs space, but he’d rather dump on them. None of these young women should be trying to “fix” Piro at all. Leave him be and find a healthy relationship to be in. What a horrible message to send out: women must fix broken men.

Piro needs to use his words and TELL Luann and Tara that they’re coming on too strong.
