A nursing home receptionist would never say that. Never! just because the misunderstanding and consternation it would cause. They would either say she was discharged or stall while they summon a grief counselor.

Luann is a genuinely kind person to be checking in on Mrs. Horner. The fear of losing someone dear is always present when the person is advanced in age.

Enter a “conclusion” is about to be “jumped,” or Mrs. Horner has actually “Transitioned.”

If it’s the latter, it’ll be a Strip first.

    Kinda sad too.

Because like long lost Pru, Mrs. Horner was a foundation of good advice.

Hopefully Mrs. H is alive and well and went straight back to work.

When I was a teen, I went to visit my dad in the hospital after school. I got to his room and the bed was stripped. I found someone at the nurse’s station and she said ’he’s gone’. I panicked. She should have said he checked out and went home, not ’he’s gone.’

You’re in a facility that probably provides some medical assistance, so the desk clerk should be quick and professional, like a shot in the arm, “Mrs. Horner croaked. Have a nice day. Next”.

Hooray! Luann is going to visit her mentor! How nice, I was hoping for that. Dear Mrs. Horner probably left the retirement home to go somewhere, since I don’t think the woman at the information desk completely lack of tact. Maybe a walk, maybe a trip. Probably faint during her lesson may have made her want to do something special. I hope Luann meets her because I love seeing them chat. Maybe they can bring up again the topic of Luann studying medicine.

I work for the county Senior Nutrition program, delivering meals to seniors and shut-ins, and it’s hard when my route sheet simply lists one as UFN (Until Further Notice) or worse, Term (terminated). It’s much better when one of them has told me in advance they were going to be on vacation or better yet, felt they didn’t need the service anymore.

Okay, Luann, if she died, they’re “officially” not allowed to tell you. However, places like this almost invariably put up “In Memoriam” photos with obituaries in common areas of the building. So stroll around through those common areas. If she died within the last couple of weeks you’ll probably see her picture out somewhere. (Just don’t tell the HIPAA Enforcers you heard it from me).

Sleepy Creek is a Residence, not a hospital. This is where Mrs. Horner lives , or lived. She may have moved to a rehab facility for a month or two and checked out of SC so she doesn’t have to pay $7000 a month.

cue the dark ambient music with discordant overtones which, although broadly tonal, is inflected with chromatic and polytonal passages representing the archetypal example of a florid, melodramatic style without being interpreted as an overly heavy-handed metaphor within the context of the thematic material a bit on the frenetic and frantic side with interesting rhythmic devices which seem to counterpoint the surrealism of the underlying metaphor utilizing a novel imaging technique known as positron emission tomography and the spontaneous nondenominational conceptions by expansively recontextualizing liminal narratives of colonic hydrotherapy with a twinge of giddiness

Medical professionals and receptionists in places like this are (USUALLY) strongly rehearsed and coached on EXACTLY how to phrase whatever the circumstances may be in the least shocking terms (“she did not survive, I’m sorry…..” or “she has departed for another facility/her home” or whatever). One clever dodge is “you need to talk to the family….” I had the latter happen when I went to the hospital to visit a sick friend, and cut to the chase: “Okay, if he’s still alive, you can confirm that for me, right?………… [sickly silent smile from the receptionist]…………. [sigh]….thank you ……”

Of course, the other crazy set-up:

    “She left us….”“WHAT?!? She’s DEAD?!?!?”“She went home………….”“Oh, good!”“……………………. to Our Lord….”“NOOOOO!”

Transitional care after hospitalization is a thing. Luann looks like she checked her retirement residence. May or may not indicate she’s at permanent status (assisted living, skilled nursing, ect…). Hopefully she’ll be back to independent living. Btw, did I miss what the reason was for Mrs Horner collapse? She didn’t need CPR, was it stroke? TIA? That might give us a hint.
