Les actually could cook. Too bad he doesn’t cook for himself. Cold be he isn’t being honest that that’s all he could afford on his dishwasher income. Most restaurants don’t hire full time employees as to avoid paying for their benefits. I imagine the DeGroots aren’t any different. If Gunther figures it out, he could point out he’d eat better meals if he moves up to cook or server. Or look for a different job.
So, if a box of cereal is $5 (last about a week), a gallon of milk $5, a pack of Ramen is $2, and left overs are free…then Les is spending about $24 a week on staple meals, or about $100 a month. Amazing he still has so much hair with that diet.
A number of folks here over th last few days’ve said Les was a good cook. I guess bein able to heat up a cup of Slop Ramen passes as a cook nowadays. At least he didn’t start a grease fire..
Les is living the classic life of a cynical and unambitious thirty-year-old bachelor, the problem is that probably he’s not even 20. Les is happy with what he has, but I hope that something happens that makes him want to change. Maybe something at The Fuse, or another fight with his mother, or the love for a girl.
Gunther is not your usual college eater. Fried food and burgers were our common fare when I was in college along with late night breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage and grits.
I’ll tell you something about Ramen noodles… They may make a decent soup base if you add meat and vegetables, but just by themselves, there is pretty much no nutrition…. Just a little bit of fat and a lot of sodium. It’s OK to eat for lunch, just don’t try to live off them. Back in college, there was a Chinese grad student who ate nothing but Ramen noodles for about two months. When he didn’t show up for class for an entire week, no one had seen him and he wasn’t answering his phone, the campus police entered his dorm room… The poor guy was laying in bed… stone-cold dead. He had died of starvation.
My wife proudly said she came from 4 generations of women who don’t cook and she saw no reason to change. She has improved over the years. when we were first married she actually burned spaghetti. Lucky for her i like to cook. My father in law saw me as a kindred spirit
Baby carrots don’t have to be peeled, chief salads usually do not have carrots, Les use to be a waiter but switched with Tiffany who was the dishwasher in return for a share of the tips she earned.
Leftovers from work should be fairly diverse and plentiful even if they effectively nearly all of it. That would still leave quite a bit for single person.
I’m not as lazy as Les, but I am so tired of cooking. Fortunately, my dear husband took over cooking breakfast when he retired, and does a lot of the other meals, too.
Tiresome?? Tiresome is a goody two shoes dweeb who likes to spew unsolicited criticisms. And since when does Gunther (the perfect little housewife) think he gets to be so judgmental? I’m glad Les is unfazed.
Gunther was always a major dork. Now he’s a prissy little a$$ that needs to be knocked off his high horse. I hope Les hides all his carrots. Maybe the celery too. And the spinach.
I’ve been told that store-bought ramen is loaded with sodium and really not good for you to eat on a regular basis. But people Les’s age aren’t particularly concerned about that anyway.
Would someone explain why online recipes even give “Prep Times?” The only way I can get close to the time given is to assign my wife, two teenagers, three neighbors and the guy who lives in the vacant lot down the street chopping and assembly jobs.
I don’t care for salads myself. And there are so many kinds of cereal that it doesn’t get too boring. I used to buy a smaller box (not those ‘family’ size monsters). It would last me a couple weeks, then I’d buy a different variety. Lather, rinse, repeat ad infinitum. Leftovers from work would be both varied and cheap. Ramen in also cheap and comes in lots of flavors. I think Les has it figured out.
Most of my salads are “kitchen sink” salads- whatever I have on hand that I think will taste good in it. I think I got this way of making salads from my dad. He made huge salads for his dinner 3-4 times a week, and put in weird stuff like Tofu, canned tuna (bleah!), garbanzo beans, etc.
Odd couple. I became a reasonably good cook as a bachelor, then when I got married I cooked less, but still cooked quite a bit. when the kids came and my wife and I both worked and had busy lives, I cooked quite often. Now, in old age, I don’t cook much, more because of being sick, or fatigued (I finally have an excuse for being lazy) but I still can microwave. Their different styles fit them, but in real life things can change.

Les’ diet sounds pretty darn boring. I’ll take salads and thoroughly cooked meals, thank you very much!
And isn’t Ramen cooked? So WTH is he even talking about?? ;)

“Ramen for lunch, and leftovers from work for dinner.” So, dinner is leftover ramen, or is he stealing other people’s lunches?

The “compare and contrast” here with Gunther and Les reminds me of Goofus and Gallant in Highlights for Children- really subtle.

On a side note: get rid of the plastic cutting board. Tiny particles get into your food. Wood or bamboo a better choice.
