Years ago one of my nephews and his circle of friends had life all figured out and they were’nt even out of high school yet. Their goal was to find a woman they could hook up with who happened to be on welfare. If she had a couple of kids, even better! They would never have to work a day in their lives! I wonder how that worked out for them?
I like Les a lot more than I like Gunters. Les goes to work every day, he’s got a good heart and is responsible for Punk’s care and well-being. He’s not the jerk he was in high school.Gunther, on the other hand is so tied to mommy’s apron strings that it makes me gag. Yes, he goes to school, but he doesn’t work. He’s “mooching” free rent as much as Les is, but no one seems to call him on that. Basically, I just don’t like him.
And some “folks” wonder why Mr. Knox doesn’t have a girlfriend.
But seriously, when Lex does get a G/F, let’s hope she’s not “overly ambitious.” Which pretty much describes just about EVERY unmarried young adult woman in this Strip, that We currently know about.
Except one.
There IS a gal in this Strip that likes to sleep late, and she’s looking for a B/F.
Here’s a HINT: She lives at the DeGroot household.
Karen is demeaning me in a sense; I too get up early (way earlier than Les), go to work until at least 6PM, get home around 7:30PM at the earliest, eat food and play with my PS5 until late at night. Then I go to bed and do it again until Saturday morning, which is today. If Les wants to push himself further, he’ll do it when he’s ready, until then it’s his life. Nothing’s wrong with eating ramen, sitting with your cat, and playing the game until 2AM. He’s currently in his late teens-early 20s, this is the, “I’m glad that I still have a job,” phase. We need a new arc Monday.
Les is so happy with his repetitive life that I hope something will happen to complicated it or make him want to change. Something like his mother dragging him into a disaster, or a girlfriend a bit weird who pushes him to do absurd things (basically Tara). I just hope this change won’t be due to something bad that will happen to Punk.
Let’s get back to basics, it’s not your life. He seems happy, he has found what works for him. He’s not hurting anyone. What right do you have to criticize?
Got say…I’m with Les on this one. I have worked hard my whole life and now I strive for routine. I still enjoy the occasional adventure in life, but I do not go out of my way seeking it. There is comfort in routine…and if you’re Canadian, poutine.
Les may have an alter ego he’s not willing to share with others. A bit like he likes cats without saying he likes cats. It’d be interesting to learn he’s a super hero of some type. Ok, maybe not quite a super hero, but has some type of supreme talent no one else is even aware of that he’s keeping to himself.
While it isn’t many folks’ cup of tea. Les enjoys his routine. It’s not adversely affecting anyone else. He’s content doing a job that many would not be happy to do. And that’s work that needs to be done. Just be glad someone is willing to do it and stop trying to “elevate” them to some perceived next level.
you should talk Gunnie; your’e quite regimented and routine bound yourself, but you get points for taking off on a cross country trip with Bets. As for Les, there was a time when he was doing petty crime and was in legal trouble. Now he’s clean, has a job, a home and a cat that he adores. Raman noodles is what his budget can afford. Gunnie could have made him a small salad to go with the soup.
Like Thomas Fairchild in _Sabrina_—who took a chauffeur’s job so he’d have time to read books—Leslie Knox is unambitious, comfortable in his own skin, and content. He’s the bad one. Whiny, manipulative, anxiety-ridden, passive-aggressive Mama’s-boy Gunther is the good one. You will be made to agree!
Like I said, it doesn’t sound so bad. If there’s pizza and beer and moderation and no Gunthers, and you get an enormous raise (but you won’t, not with Frank involved).
Maybe Gunther should get off his high horse considering the fact that he lives in a glorified toolshed and his only furniture is a beanbag chair. And for his judgmental talk about Les’s routines, he’s the one who ran away from Rosa in order to resume holding his mom’s apron strings. Not to mention his meticulously planned trip with Bets, where the single most important action each day was his morning phone call with Mommy (he even made Bets do it in his stead the one day he wasn’t able.) What’s that if not a routine?
I lived a life much like Les between 24 and 28, I had friends, but I had also stopped drinking so if I went out, I was the designated driver. In that time, I did take vacations to visit relatives in other states. Went to my 10-year HS reunion and met a lady I knew but never dated and we started going out. We will celebrate 36 years of marriage in December.
Some of us like living in a rut. It is their comfort zone. Inertia. An object will remain at rest until acted upon by an outside force. I chose to move out of my parents’ house after graduating college at age 22. My college dropout older brother was kicked out at 37.
Since they are still 19/20 they have been living there less than a year. Gunter is starting his second year of college and could not have gone to Peru or taken a semester off for his road trip other wise he would still be a freshman.
I would like to see a story featuring Les and Punk, just so it isn’t sad, or awful or anything. Maybe Les could issue Gunther a “24 hour let it go” challenge? Gunther seems confused by how Les lives his life, so maybe he needs to try it before he criticizes it.
I guess I will be a minority opinion here….. but there are some times where the relative simplicity of Les’ life and lifestyle do seem rather d@mn appealing.
Question out here for folks, since I am not commenting as often as I had….. I have lost track of some folks. I am wondering if anyone can tell me if the person who went by the name “Trilogy” is still around here at Luann? If so, what is his current moniker? Just wondering because I always enjoyed his comments and have learned a lot of new (to me) music knowledge solid to him.
This is kind of fun eh, interesting to see where this goes and if it grows beyond these 2 characters. If it does, it will definitely make some folks in the peanut gallery go crazy! Count on it! ;-0
OK, Sports Fans… time for conjecture and opinion! What if this thread is about Leslie and/or Gunther leaving the Gulag for (?greener) pastures? In other words, time for one or both to move out and start anew. A typical college kid who is NOT living at home will have a series of different roommates; why not these two.? Even though Pitts and Mooney are in sorta-kinda progressive California, there is still less chance that they will have a mixed-gender living situation, (although if Tiffany opened up the Mansion, there would be room for all!) So… Gunther and Ox? Gunthy and big Jack? Les and Piro? Les and Ox bonding over work? Disgruntled soon-to-be ex-boyfriend of selfish cheerleader moving to the Gulag as an excuse to get away from his grinding demands (sorry…) of satisfying the carnal lust of a hyperactive narcissistic cheerleader? It seems that of all the possible males, Ox would be the most laid back and easiest to get along with.
The wierd part is that he has a point. It very much depends on your world view and your vision of your part in it, but for him it works. And bottom line is that he is gainfully employed doing something useful and content with his life. Could be worse.
So Les is not meant to be a rocket scientist or even an accountant. Here’s the thing… He doesn’t have to be! He has a job he’s happy with, he takes care of his pet, and he’s not involved in any illegal activities.
Les is living the life he enjoys. And it looks like Gunther (who is very ambitious) is honestly trying to understand that, even though it’s hard for him to get his mind around why someone would choose to live that way. One of the smartest women I ever knew was a lot like Les. She never wanted anything beyond the basics in life and she seemed happy with her routines. I think everyone is different and thank goodness for that! If the world held only Gunther types or Les types it would be a sad and narrow place. If someone is happy and can manage a simple lifestyle without government handouts then leave them alone! But perhaps both guys will take a second look at the road less travelled and decide to try just a bit of the others’ values. Gunther could stand to relax his high standards a little and Les might decide he wants to try a class or two in something that interests him. I’d love to see that. I suspect Les is secretly smarter than he lets on—-he’s just so afraid of failure it’s easier to just not even try.
There was a time when Les’s life was not so simple, e.g. years back, I think he was being tried in a juvenile court for petty theft and other actions; Al cleared him by promising that he would have a job. Then there was the issue with Ann Eiffel feigning pregnancy using an ultra sound photo which I believe was that of Les (when she was carrying him). I remember the scene on the street when he separated himself from her. That too was stressful. With all that behind him, he now lives a simple but honest life which suits him just fine.
