If he’s been calling and messaging her for weeks and getting no reply, it’s OVER! If he keeps pursuing her, he just looks DESPERATE and will push her away even more. He needs to get on with his life and go out with friends etc.
So Leslie’s sympathy turns into today’s callousness. Yesterday I thought Gunther was giving Bets all the space she needed by not calling her. but he has been calling her all along. Maybe it is time to move along. Or call on a “woman” friend for advice on the ways of love. Who would be the worst person in the world to ask advice from. Aside from Luann, of course. Someone Morlock has been shipping since forever.
Aw, disappointed in you, Les. You don’t want to hear his whines and are gonna abandon him. You looked promising for personal growth and maturity. At least, you did not heckle him or insult him. There’s that small step in the right direction.
Gunther, consider the facts, Bet’s has manipulated and used emotional blackmail to control you since day one…and she’s just your girlfriend; imagine your life with Bets as your wife? Or are you so insecure, needy and maschocistic that it seems like love to you? Well, I guess the answer to that one is pretty obvious.
Dating 101. Never profess your love until you get physical with her first. Touch her in a non sexual way to test her readiness, and if she resist, just go “Oh sorry, I was brought up this way”, and if she goes into hiding, then it becomes her problem.
You see? Les has returned to his predictable old self, just like I knew he would.
But I’ll admit. I was wrong yesterday.
Les didn’t offer Gunther bad advice.
He’s not offering Gunther ANY advice whatsoever, which is a Good thing.
Now, ordinarily with Mr. Knox leaving, I would say that this is a perfect opportunity for Bets to come over, and for her have that long overdue, uninterrupted, Private conversation with Gunther.
Or better still, for Les to go the Fuse, and loudly blab about Gunny’s plight. Tiffany (Or Luann) overhears, leaves work early and heads to the Gulag to “comfort” Gunny, “time limit” free.
That WON’T happen.
Since it’s Gunther, what probably Will happen is Al Gray calling over to Bark at Gunther saying:
“Knock off the whining! You’re making so much noise that Moe can’t sleep! Don’t make Me come over there!!!”
Interesting parallels here. B goes all to pieces over what she thinks was her unwanted declaration of possible love (and possible demonstration of her low morals), and turns to Nancy. But not for advice — just as a sounding board, since (for whatever reason), B can’t turn to her own mother. Gunther goes to pieces after HIS obviously unwanted declaration of love, and, lacking anyone else to turn to, actually is asking advice from someone who used to be his nemesis. (To his credit, Les doesn’t make fun of Gunther, but most guys don’t seem to be in the ‘advice to the lovelorn’ business.) We’ll never know what Luann might have said to B when Luann started asking when B was going to ‘fix’ her problem with Nil, so there’s no reason for everyone to conclude that Luann would either be the worst person for Gunther to turn to, or possibly a helper. But Gunther COULD turn to Nancy — or even to his OWN mother. If I remember right, his mother didn’t trust Bets’ motives any more than Nancy trusted Toni’s…
He needs to go to her Instagram account or website and see what she has been posting. It could be that she already has a new “boy toy” she features in her pictures. An influencer like that can’t stop posting without losing her followers and fan base.
Time for a patented misdirection play I think, or perhaps not. Somehow though I still doubt this is the end of Gunther and Bets. As for Les? Lots of help he is, unless the idea is to let Gunther see how hopeless and non-productive pining for her still happens to be. To me this a classic Luannverse setup.
Too much responsibility for Les to answer. Poor Gunther… He can’t accept the end of his relationship. And the way it ended, no one can blame him. Bets left him without saying a word and now she’s avoiding him. That’s really mean! Maybe Gunther would do better if he will ask for advices to Luann or Tiffany. Or maybe to his wise stepfather Al.
After all this time? C’mon. Move on and save yourself anymore suffering. Even “If” she did come back, would you still want and trust her? Now that you got a really good look at her, do you actually think she’s a great match for you after all? If so, then Yikes!!! You’re flirting with major disaster and trouble. “Run for your lives, while you still can!!!”
Why would you even want her to reply? At this point you have to ask yourself “why do you want her back?” Even if she were to run back with proclamations of love would you want her back? She walked out on you and hasn’t acknowledged your existence for weeks. The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. Just saying.
“Time for me to fly, I’ve got to set myself free, time for me to fly, and that’s just how it has to be. I know it hurts to say goodbye, but it’s time for me to fly.”
So Gunther has been trying. I guess that’s a little better than not trying.
Good on Les for knowing when to butt out. Luann sure didn’t.
At this point the only way to redeem Bets is to give her some traumatic backstory that she is dealing with. Even then, Gun may not be the right person one to help her with her journey. I’m pretty sure we won’t see Les the rest of the week, so we’ll see that what GnK have in store.
Les didn’t ‘know when to butt out’; Les had never really been a friend of Gunther’s in the past (and had tormented Gunther in school). Les is basically just trying to live with the hand he’s been dealt in having to share a place with another guy, because Les doesn’t seem to have the skills to get a job that would pay enough for him to afford his own place.
As far as Luann ‘not knowing when to butt out’, Luann once was a friend of B’s, and, as I’ve reminded posters here (who keep saying ‘but that was sooo long ago’) during the same time period that Les was tormenting Gunther, Luann had both saved B’s life with CPR and had discovered that a so-called boyfriend of B’s was actually using her (in a way, like Bets used Gunther) by hiding his drugs in her school locker.
Gunther is so tormented by his loss of Bets that he reached out to someone he would not normally reach out to, which just shows Gunther’s lack of understanding of people. He hangs onto the hope that Bets will come back because he was both physically and mentally attracted to her (they DID share SF and ComicCon interests, so he continued to overlook her obsession with posting their private lives.)
Luann reached out because she thought she was still a friend of B’s. I hope when B comes back to the DeGroot house and wants to celebrate her latest escapade with Nil, that Luann just says ‘No. Nite’ and finally turns her back on someone who considers her to be an inferior.
Welcome to another gaping storyline hole in Luann! As other posters have mentioned, the OBVIOUS thing for him to do is check is Bets’ social media but it isn’t even mentioned. After making her webpage/podcasts mania into such a huge part of the relationship (it was actually the basis for the beginning, middle AND end of their romance) the writer of this comic is apparently choosing to pretend Bets’ webpage fascination doesn’t exist. It’s annoying to anyone with even short-term memory. Making Gunther into a whipped whiny little boy is also just as stupid. They would have been better off just moving forward acting like the whole thing never happened, which is their S.O.P – but maybe it should be called their M.O – since it might be comic strip crime.
Question is: tomorrow, do we stay at “The Gulag” with Gunther as something develops there (maybe he rants at Punk the same way that Bern did with Monstro?), or follow Les to work at The Fuse for developments there ?
You’re well out of it, Gunther. The rest of us had her pegged right from the start as an annoying little narcissist. All those selfies were a big warning sign.
Les’ reaction is interesting. He wasn’t loath to offer his opinion when Bets had Gunther making their pirate costumes. Today he looks like he is deliberately keeping his lip zipped because he knows Gunther wouldn’t want to hear his advice. I’m still hoping Les will reveal something about _his_date with Bets.
This could go a number of ways. But the way it won’t go is to never hear from Bets again! IMHO Bets will show up as a changed person. They will have a discussion and may part ways. But relationships are the hot topic in Luanniverse right now. A much more likely outcome is for Gun and Bets to cement their relationship and try to take it in a different direction.
Brad and the Gman double dated once. He with Diane, the girl next door, and Gunther with Luann. I don’t think GnK will send the Gman to Brad for a relationship Bro to Bro talk.
But GnKmight send Luann to reconnect with Gunther at the Gulag. After all, that was where Gunth started this whole relationship mess with Luann’s signing him up with and providing a profile to Date-Pic. Gunther and Luann have been linked on and off throughout the strip’s history. (Are they, aren’t they? Will they, won’t they?) It may be time to bring Luann back into the mix.
I’m surprised he hasn’t checked her online presence for any updates. Bet’s behavior is surprising to me. I thought, or was hoping, she was more considerate, but then she has been focused on her online followers, rather than Gunther’s feelings/needs. Seems she’s just ignorant. I can’t imagine it takes this long to get over/accept/respond to an “I love you” speech.I hate to see Gunther so dependent on Bets. He needs to find out what he wants, other than Bets, and move on. About the time he does that, she may show up again. From overbearing mother to overbearing girlfriend. Nope, he needs to decide what is important to him. Les is smart not to get involved. He may have a bit of insight though as he did date her once. This is quite different from the last arc with everyone getting involved with Bernice’s situation. ;-o
Oh Gunther, if she won’t return your calls and texts after all this time you HAVE your answer. It’s time to move on. Check out her social media. You may find out that SHE has already done so. But if you have to have a more definitive answer go to her house or somewhere you can casually run into her and try to get a face to face conversation going. But be prepared to hear bad news.
Ha! You know I didn’t much care for Les in the beginning. But steadily he has grown on me as a character. Nice development guys!Today’s strip made me smile. Yup, time to get to work. Les knows the score.
The ‘romantic’ (not so much) dinner at Tiffs brought to light the stark differences in the way Bets and Gunth saw their relationship, Bets directing the show and having cosplay and social media fun with Gunther (silly in love) being dragged around like a little dog. That’s the extreme view though it may be somewhere in between. Given this, it is understandable that G is totally clueless as to why the Bets abruptly walked away. If anyone can help Gunther see the situation objectively it would be Les or Tiff. But for now, Gunth is left alone and maybe tomorrow the phone will ring or a message will arrive.
Yes, it is over, get over it and move on. Her motavation is not important if she is unwilling discuss her grievance. Les should have said that to Gunther before he left.
To those saying that Bets ghosted Gunther: did she though? From what I understand, the key feature of ghosting is that it comes out of nowhere and the victim is left with no idea what they even did to cause it (ie. as far as they knew everything was fine beforehand). But Gunther knows full well why this happened, and the last thing Bets said was that she needed space (while it’s not the most explicit form of the breakup speech, that phrasing does get used as a euphemism for it quite often.)
Now I’m not saying that Bets treating him like this isn’t messed-up, but I’m not sure that it counts as ghosting. Any thoughts on this?
Whoops! Trouble in Paradise! So, Gunthie-baby asks, “Why’d she run away? What went wrong?” It all went wrong when he took Tiff’s side in a little dispute. He came off as weak and throwing Bets under the bus to side with Tiff.
TBH, neither Tiff nor Bets were completely “right” or “wrong”. If Tiff imagined that romantic dinner as something French, that’s a-ok. If she needed to teach Ox some French phrases to enhance the Frenchy mood (which he botched), that’s fine, although it comes off as pretentious. Her fault was in not asking Bets what she (Bets) wanted, or informing Bets that the dinner theme was French Sophisticate, and please dress appropriately. Theme not open to negotiation.
Bets wanted a fantasy pirate-themed dinner, which is OK (lots of people love pirates… Disneyland did THAT right), but she didn’t convey those wishes to Tiff??? Bets was willing to drop a few hundred dollars for some Yo Ho Ho and a Bottle o’ Rum, and didn’t tell Tiff this? So that Tiff could prepare the decor, and have the servers dress to enhance the mood and really sweep the happy couple into the 17th century? All she had to do is spend 30 seconds to say “Pirate theme” and let Tiff tell her if it’s doable or not.
Plenty of idiocy to go around. Gunthie is supposed to be smart. All the had to do was tell Bets and Tiff privately and separately that they had a “failure to communicate”, nobody’s right or wrong, and let’s all plan things better next time, so “what we expect” and “what we get” are one and the same.
I think Bets is more at fault than Tiffany. But Tiffany was wrong for not communicating to Bets that she was going ahead with the fine dining theme. At the very least, Tiffany should have told Bets that the dinner was free, but on Tiffany’s terms.
Speaking of Disneyland, for $300 Bets would have done better to take Gunther to the Blue Bayou restaurant.
It’s too late to advise Gunther (really too late) but, if I could: Leave Bets only one message or text that you’re available when she is ready to talk. Other than than, do not chase or “come to her rescue”; Bets left because of her own hang-ups and it is up to her to resolve them. Other than that, Les is right to leave (but we know he won’t).
When I was in the military during the early 70s I was station at one point on a remote site, no leave for one year. During that time every married person got the “dear john letter”. They were mostly around Gunthers age, and guess what, they got over it. He needs to grow some cojones, or he is just going end up making the same mistakes over and over again.
I learned that after leaving three messages, if she chose not to reply to me, it was safe to move on. Three weeks later, one chick called me up wondering why I stopped leaving messages. She was furious that I had moved on before she had moved on.
Somebody else asked if he’s been scrubbed from Bets’ website… has he also checked it to see what content she’s posted since the ghosting took place? It’s possible she’s too busy being an energy vampire sucking from thousands at once that she can’t cope with a one-on-one relationship…
At the moment, we can see and feel that Gunther feels he has invested too deeply in this relationship with Bets. Yet, will there be another “shoe” where Bets comes back to explain? Probably.
Yet, for my manner of thinking…. I would actually like to see Gunther simply recover…. and MOVE ON… with his life, both scholastically and relationship-wise for a quite a while. I think at this point, if Bets were to simply come back and reveal whatever her story is…. I suspect Gunther would take her back into his life in a heartbeat…. but that it would tend to be at a level where Gunther feels too “needy” of this relationship. I would rather see Gunther hearing Bets story when he is emotionally more sure of himself (moving on) so that if/when he chooses to go back into a relationship with Bets he will be on more of an even footing…. and not feeling so desperate for the relationship.
I may not be up on today’s lingo, but isn’t that what they call “ghosting?” No matter what it’s called, Gunther, she is over you, so stop calling, stop texting, stop everything. You’re starting to sound pathetic. Move along. She was no good for you anyway.
Of course, you all know what will happen. Gunther will stop calling, stop texting, and go on with his life, and then she’ll come running back saying she’s sorry. You heard it here folks!
This situation with Bets explains a lot as to why her last few relationships have come via Internet dating sites, lest you forget that is how Les dated her previously. She has probably burned so many relationships with personal friends that noone except online unknowns would touch her with a 10 foot pole.
A few weeks ago I figured out that Gunther and Bernice belong together. They both are somewhat more mature compared with the other characters and might actually compliment each other. Plus if Bernice is going to be with someone creative, it should be a guy with a future; not so sure about Nil.
Gun had plenty of female admires. Back on Dec. 31, 2019, their fans referred to him as “Cute”, “Hot Hugo” and “Smokin Gub!”. As many commentators noted, the hot blonde who asked him to pose at Managafest back on Jan. 3, 2020 seemed interested in Gunther. He just needs to jump back on the web.
Weeks without a reply? I can understand Gunther’s need for closure, but he’s walking the fine line of desperation. Cue up Paul Simon’s “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover.”
Poor Gunth. It’s always the nice guys. Ignore her Gunth and she will come back she needs a costume or a favor and then tell her to stick it where the sun don’t shine.
I am from Trinidad and Tobago, Ramkissoon Trace, San Juan. I am looking for a job as a secretary in an office. It will be gratefully appreciated, thanks!

But GnK might send Luann to reconnect with Gunther at the Gulag.

Vangoghdog01 over 3 years ago

PeterPirate over 3 years ago
