I read this arc as Greg and/or Karen telling Luann’s fans, and by association us commenters, to give Luann a break about not rushing into things. Things like relationships, sex, dumping her BFF Bernice.
Considering that there has been only one year since Luann, etc. graduated, there sure have a lot happened. Mr. Fogarty became a novelist (most novelists make less money than teachers), a bikini episode, not to mention their marriage, and retirement from school. It;s; almost like five or six years have been crammed into the last twelve months.
We seem to be fleshing out (or wrapping up) some of the characters in the strip. It started, perhaps, with Prudence. She was sent off to marry her long time love and supposedly live happily ever after. Bernice has a love interest, as it were, and has resolved her family relationships in both households. Gunther and Bets appear to be blissfully in love and ensconced in the Gray family. Tiffany appear to be getting close to a similar situation. Now we’ve seen our old friends Mr. and Mrs. Fogarty romping through life after decades of trials and tribulations in the teaching profession.
What’s going on? Are we getting ready to wrap things up and rider off into the sunset?
Well, it seems that Mr. Fogarty was “rewarded,” for all those years of torment from the high school kids, mainly Knute.
Good For Mr. F.
Once again, it seems that about the ONLY couples allowed to have “fun” in this Strip are the older MARRIED couples. And when old folks aren’t creeping the kids out with lurid tales of their “sexual exploits,” the oldsters do their gosh-darnedest to keep the kiddies separated. Hypocrisy in Action?
By the way, Lu. You might want to pick and read a copy of Mr. Fogarty’s book. I’m betting you, and some of the other kids will see themselves in the pages of his book.
Unless Mr.Fogarty is the author of those tawdry books Nancy told Bernice about. ;-)
Hmm.. Looks like ol’ Mr Fogarty’s not the only one who’s a little frisky. And ya know what? Good on her. Nice to see she’s enjoying her life and living it to the full. Unlike a certain neurotic character who’s currently sharpening pencils for her and who has a real bad habit of overthinking every minute detail of her existence. Now I shall not name this character out right, but I think you all know who I’m talking about, right?
Tyge suggests, above, that G&K are simply telling us to not „rush“ Luann into pretty much anything. Nothing is going to happen for a very long time.
Nothing we didn’t already know.
But capricorn9th had another spin, maybe even more interesting, that the point of this arc was to fill us in on the Fogartys. And in one day, we got more action from them than we usually get from a Luann arc in about three years.
Which kind of dovetails into beb01 s comment, above.
As for Monday, hard to say, other than this arc sure doesn’t look like it has anywhere to go anymore at this point.
This story arc started last week with Luann mopping about her career choice and ended yesterday with Margo’s story of the three men. Today’s episode is filler because Greg couldn’t pace out the story to Saturday. Too much more to say but no desire to run this out to a third week so he cut it short with this info dump about Ms Phelps. (Helpless?)
Awwww… the face that Margo Fogarty has when she talks about Mr. Fogarty… you can see she loves him very much ♡. I am happy to hear that he’s doing great. It was so sad that no one ever listened to him. Of course, Luann doesn’t want too much information about their private life, but she gets the message. Hope this arc continues next week with career suggestions and then, with Margo talking with Bernice.
OK, this went straight to inappropriate and disturbing in record time. Luann isn’t there to be your confidante, lady.
Luann needs to go to her college and talk to a real career counselor, not somebody who doesn’t seem to have any real interest in helping her. “Don’t rush things” is NOT real career advice, in fact it just encourages Luann to keep wandering around with no real direction and waste a large portion of her life feeling aimless and unhappy.
Share a slightly ribald story to reset Luann’s mindset as being seen by someone as a grown woman, not ‘a student I knew in high school’.
Then help her find perspective that life doesn’t just drop in your lap; some journeys are longer than others and that can be okay.
Mindfully and intelligently explore what engages you, let it teach you about yourself and guide you. You’ll get “there”. Don’t dawdle, but don’t let others stuff you into a box based on their schedule.
Mrs. Fogerty reminds me of a gal I was sent to for rehab once. She spent our first session talking about herself and demonstrating how limber and agile she is at her advanced age (42). At one point she actually jumped up and stood balancing with one foot on each arm of her desk chair. After thirty minutes, and since I had no interest in learning how to balance on top of a chair, I limped out of her office – while at the same time calling for a different referral from my doctor’s office (an act which was actually quite agile for me at the time). After many years I still count her among one of the oddest people I have ever encountered.
Some people have an IRA which builds up to help them in their senior years. Margo has a sexual IRA which does the same thing. Careful, Mr. Fogarty, Margo could be around any corner, ready to pounce.
I’m think Tyge nailed part of the arc, other parts include telling Luann to relax and do, things will happen (in other words stay your course, you’re doing fine). I’m also thinking with Bernice sent off to sharpen pencils she’s either been told to mind her own business and learn before doing or you really need to look at a new path but both art to subtle for Bernice.
What a coincidence! In “Luann Again” She and Fogarty are talking about how he’s been in school since he was 5 years old… college, then as a teacher. He’s never had a break. And now, here we get to see years later he’s happily married and is living his best life. I’m glad for the update on the characters! Fun to see. :)
Um, Mrs. Fogarty (and apparently she’s one of those people who believes that Ms. is only for unmarried women, which is not true – it’s for women who don’t believe their marital status should define them when listing their name), while I appreciate you letting Luann know that she will have choices and the potential for good and exciting outcomes long into her future, I think at this point you need to remember that it’s not all about you…
I must say something special: I really like this bow, it makes you understand how in life you must never give up, and it is very useful for young people, especially in this very difficult historical period. For example, I feel very unmotivated and depressed, but things like this help me to have more confidence in myself and to move forward.G&K are doing a great job with this story, I hope it can lead to the evolution of Luann that we have been waiting for for years.Besides, I didn’t imagine that Fogarty’s (and Ms. Fogarty’s) life could improve so much, even ex Ms Phelps seems like a better woman than in the past, when she was once like a meme.Lately many seemed unsatisfied with certain apparently insignificant bows, but I have to be honest I’m starting to like this very much, keep it up
Did we know that Miss Phelps / Mrs. Fogarty’s first name was Margo? I don’t recall ever seeing that before. No complaint, I think it’s a fine name.
We did see that Miss Phelps was now Mrs. Fogarty a couple of years back, but there was no indication that Luann and her peers knew about it (presumably since they’d left all that “high school stuff” behind). And to think, Fogarty himself is now a frisky author!
So a novelist and a freelance councilor. Would either of you have health insurance if you HADEN’T made the ACTIVE decision to work with the school system prior? I appreciate there “retirement” careers, but Luann has stated she needs/wants to cover her expenses. There are to many women out of a job & retirement account post 2020 for this kind of crap "therapy"’.
As a mental health professional, this makes me cringe. Granted, Mrs. Fogarty isn’t conducting a true counseling session, but just giving “advice.” However, with a few exceptions, counselors are supposed to focus on the person who has come to them for help, and not make it about themselves. Luann needs to find a good, professional career counselor to help her.
