So does Axel even want to be there? Usually people who get tutored are trying to learn the subject they’re doing poorly in.

Uhh . . . I feel like I need to bone up on my history as well, particularly the subjects of WW2 and the Korean War.

Excuse me while I go binge watch my HOGAN’S HEROES and M*A*S*H DVDs.

My History teacher made me lean the Gettysburg address. Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new Nation.

How can Luann tutor someone who doesn’t want to learn? Axel’s parents probably made him get a tutor, but he has no interest in learning.

axel is entering that stage in life where he thinks everything is lame, boring and a waste of time. but if you try to explain ANYTHING to him, he yells “duh, i know that already.”Luann, axel is trying to seem like a tough guy to impress you. Don’t fall for it, tell this boy he needs to concentrate on studies or you aren’t going to tutor him.

Yes, just change the subject of the lesson when your student gets bored.

Luann keeps looking at the bill on his hat while she wonders if it is “up for day and down for night”, or “down for day and up for night”.

How can war be fascinating?

Oh, Axel’s there to make time with Luann, as he mentioned yesterday. Wonder when we’ll see the next step.

Greg has quite a stable of male characters: Leslie, Piro, Nil, Gunther, TJ, Elwood, Mr. Gray, Mr. Fogarty, Art instructor Zebo, Jonah, Dirk, Bernice’ brother, and now Little Mister Warmth, Axel. Tom Farrell is rich and good looking but has a weakness for gold digging bimbos, Brad is good since Greg re-shaped his head, Quill has split to Broadway, Knute is missing in action, so it’s Frank who is top dog…….and, he has Nancy, hottest female in the tri-county area.

Axel is not interested in learning. I believe his parents forced him to go to see a tutor because he is failing in his classes. When a kid is failing, it is usually due to 1. Learning Disability. 2. Hearing issues. 3. ADHD and 4. Disinterest. #4 is the most common ailment.

Axel is a thirteen year old boy who is an older version of Shannon. What Axel needs is an expensive therapist or a 6 week survival training course?

So typical, some disbelief that Luann might be intelligent enough to not only know Civil Was history, but to be interested in it; two Axel is merely the Luann version of Holden Caulfield, or maybe none here ever read Catcher in the Rye back in high school literature

I’m waiting to see how Luann improvises a stovepipe hat and a beard for when she recites the Gettysburg Address.

How about a number of dope-slaps on the back of that punk’s head??

Five hundred words on an address that was 272 words long. Some teacher has a screwy sense of humor.

Well, we can see what his problem is.

Appomattox Court House occurred on April 9, 1865. 157 years ago, not 159. On the other hand, the Gettysburg Address (17325 follows all Gettysburg addresses today) happened on November 19, 1863, which WAS almost 159 years ago.

I can’t stand those pronounced perpetual puckering lips..

At least that means Axel isn’t just pretending for have an excuse for spending time with an older girl but he really needs help with his homework, a lot of help! I’m afrad that Luann will try to change his behavior towards life too. That’s not the job she was asked to do and usually it’s just a huge waste of energy, BUT she may be able to do that… if she’ll success, probably Mrs Fogarty will ask her if has never thought to become a consuelor.

National and world history is a bit like your health history that the doctor takes when you’re a new patient. They need to know what ailments you’ve had, whether anyone in your family has had cancer, how you’ve done with diet and exercise … all of it. Only then can they can a good picture of how you got to be in the condition you’re in. No shaming about it, just a factual picture of what has been so they know how to evaluate where you are. You can be embarrassed about some of that personal history and lie about it (and people do), but that only muddies the waters for the doctor who can’t treat you as well.

Regular history is much the same. We need to know what happened in the past so we can understand how we got in the the condition we’re in now. We can lie about it if things in our past embarrass us, but that won’t help us understand our current situation or get to a healthier place.

It’s a bit difficult to write 500 words about a speech that was 272 words long. :)It’s true that the speech was given 159 years ago. HOWEVER, she said “The Civil War” — aka "The War Between the States " I find the latter term more appropriate. The War, however, began 161 years ago. Let’s see who knows who fired the first shot.

After a few more minutes of this, I’d be asking him Give me one good reason why I should not conclude, “You – psh. Waste of time… get outta here.”

I’m sorry, but this story line is one of the stupidest I’ve aver seen here. I’d rather see other characters, not this stuck in one place conversation to nowhere. let me know when Greg gets back to something more interesting.

The G-Address was only about 276 words long. I think G Evans was testing us!

The Civil War certainly is fascinating. It was all about slaver— STATES RIGHTS! I ain’t want no critical race theory in MAH skewl! USA! USA! USA! USA!

See Sean Conant’s 370 page book, THE GETTYSBURG ADDRESS: PERSPECTIVES ON LINCOLN’S GREATEST SPEECH for reference. The Civil War occurred from 1861 to 1865 so any number between 157 and 169 is accurate. Luann didn’t specify the beginning or the end of the Civil War and is undoubtedly calculating very quickly in her head from the 1863 Gettysburg address year.

Brains are a waste of time on this useless piece of human space.

I so hope this story will turn around and be interesting though, so far, things appear bleak. Luann needs to probe why Axle dislikes all school and debate him on that point. Just making The Gettysburg Address interesting won’t solve his core problem. And it will make this story trite since nothing will have changed. Axle [sic] can change because he’s not a core character.

History is sometimes a matter of opinion, but all the ignorance in the world can’t change 1+1=2.

It was NOT a Civil War. It was the War of Northern Aggression. It was the U.S. invading a sovereign, peaceful nation, the CSA, and brutally causing the deaths of some 650,000 people all for the power and glory of a noted war criminal, Abraham Lincoln. Nothing else.

It’s funny how when you get older, you realize that 159 years ago wasn’t long ago.

Heck, I tell young people that the Civil Rights Act not only wasn’t long ago, it was in my lifetime, and the reaction is just that I’m really old.

Even drug dealers needs to know math. If I have five dime bags and give one a way to to get someone hooked and sell two, how many do I have left and how much money did I make?

Knute; if you think you even have a chance with someone “older” (Luann?) you’d better start showing an interest in your studies. Besides, at least some subjects AREN’T a “waste of time.” History shows us what mistakes were made in the past, in hopes that we can avoid them in the future. (faint hopes it seems, right now.) Math. Wouldn’t like to know what you earned, how much you should expect to take home, how much you have after paying your bills?

Forget Luann. Forget Axel. What I find most intriguing about this strip is the concept of writing a 500-word essay about a 272-word speech.

Ha – you could quote the Gettysburg Address in 500 words and still have a couple hundred words left to give your analysis.

Back in the Neolithic Age I tutored kids in freshman English part time at the college I attended. I was frustrated at how many of them had graduated high school yet could not compose a complete sentence. I advised most of them that I could help, but I couldn’t make up for years of lack of proper instruction or worse, bad attitude.

Axel knows all he needs to know about everything because he just KNOWS it all and what’s left over is just plain stupid. Bet he can ‘shred’ a guitar riff, though…

I hope that little clown’s “Waste of time” remarks aren’t the theme for the next couple of weeks, or however long this arc lasts.

All 13 year old boys are interested in something. Luann should find out what his interests are and built on those to teach him. Maybe he would be interested in the weapons used in the war or some other aspect of it.

My report on the Gettysburg Adress started with “Fire can’t melt steel”.

Apparently Axel has taken ‘Kodachrome’ to heart and doesn’t intend to make the same mistake himself. Paul Simon, however, thought enough of his education to graduate from H. S. and college.

Now Luann gets to shine as a college kid with a future in education. Finally..not an arrested development plagued little girl.

Life is hard. It’s even harder when you are ignorant.

the argument I have against most history classes are the number of teachers who think the bible as an actual document. I still remember classes from the 70’s that were just plain wrong.

I’m hoping this is a story about Luann and her future. If she can get Axel to get more interested in school, than teaching is her calling. I think people here need to relax and see what comes of this story. I think this may be a good one. Fingers crossed!

Tomorrow we will see Luann reconsidering her Teacher/Educator career choice.

That was one of my younger brothers in H.S. I often wonder how he would have turned out as an adult if he hadn’t died in a landslide at 18.

He should read the book by Leander Stillwell, The story of a comm soldier in the Civil War, his own personal journal from 1862-1865…
