I think this arc is getting a little weird.

My advice would be to just keep your kidney, Luann.

This is weirdly disappointing. Or, is this disappointingly weird? Thoughts beb?

There was a lot of talking this week but to what purpose? I feel like we’re reached the Heat-Death of the Luanniverse. Nothing happens, nothing changes forever, and ever and ever.

Luann, say something INTELLIGENT?? You sound like a 5-year-old. Phil is college educated and capable of having a real adult conversation. He’d not be too impressed with a girl who is empty upstairs. And Phil? Do you know that Mrs Horner is NOT eligible for kidney implant and is on dialysis for that very reason? She’s too old. That would go better for Luann to understand that she cannot donate to Mrs Horner. Unless you genuinely don’t know this information and went on this tangent about donating for nothing because Mrs Horner “doesn’t want it” and the high chance of the organ going to a stranger? Working at nursing home, you ought to know your charges aren’t eligible for any kind of transplants. (Not your fault, Phil. That fault lays squarely on your creator…he made you sound stupid too).

It’s one thing for a 19 yr old to consider giving a body part to someone you care about, and a whole other thing to give to someone you don’t know. Her best bet is to leave a directive in case she dies in a car accident. She gets credit for even considering this. Can you imagine Steph ever considering this??

So much for this arc, it veered into ridiculous territory.

But basically Luann COULDN’T give it to Mrs. Horner because she’s too old to be considered for a transplant. I mean, it’s not like there’s a choice here.

What used to be one of my kidneys is now in SE Iowa on a pig farm.

My co-worker lost both his kidneys due to high blood pressure. He didn’t feel it until it was too late.

Besides checking your blood pressure, if you start seeing a lot of foam when you urinate, see a doc immediately. The foam is caused by a higher than normal protein level.

This is really wierd…and getting very disturbing. Why is this guy encouraging a young woman to donate a kidney to some stranger. I don’t mean to sound unsympathetic, but organ donation seems like something you would consider later in life for a loved one, or if you wanted to take immediate action, you could add the organ donation designation to your driver’s license. He’s so casual about it, like suggesting someone should give a coat to charity. This whole thing is wrong on so many levels and it’s definitely not funny at all. What is generating this conversation? Is Greg going through kidney failure?

Well it fits LuAnn ‘casue she’s just weird. Weird is as weird does.

Is a kidney anything like a “trick knee”?

It’s weird either way, but wonderful. :-) My uncle was a urologist, and performed the harvesting side of kidney donations. The nice part is sometimes he got to meet the donors, which is not something that happens with all organ donations.

Is he going, hint, hint?

Dunno if Luann will donate her kidney, if she decides to register as an organ donor and maybe even become a blood donor. But I like how kind Phill is explaining things to her. I think we’ll see more of him in the future, maybe even when he’s not working at the retirement residence.

Luann, you can really be a piece of work. Please don’t donate your kidney if you’re that weirded out about where it will end up.

Although the arc has good intentions, it really is not realistic. Realistic in a cartoon you sneer? Yes I know. But truthfully I can’t imagine a doctor recommending or condoning a 19/20 year old donating a kidney except in extreme cases. She would probably require approval from her parents. Kidney donation is major surgery at any age plus you compound the risk of her needing a kidney replacement in the future. Plus a directed donation is possible only if tests show a close match. Even sibling matches are only a 25% chance.

Weird IS a good word for Luann.

Today has made it clear that everyone is gonna end the arc right back where they started, with no character development and no lessons learned. Just more wheel-spinning.

Luann, stop being weird, you don’t want to scare this one away!

I think the blank slate now describes her brain

Why not just donate blood, Luann? It’s get replaced in less than 2 months. I am in the gallon club. Plus I directed a donation to my daughter who was having spine surgery at 13. (Scoliosis, she’s pretty good now)

We’re working the wrong end of the age spectrum. Luann should be considering the possibility of getting boob enhancements, not a kidney transplant for an old bat like Mrs. Horner. She should be thinking of ways to give Phil a thrill.

“I’m sure she’ll tell you to give your kidney to someone else”… no, I’m sure she’ll tell her to keep her kidney right where it is, and not take life-altering decisions driven from emotion. Slippery slope there, “Phil”. Going from “I desperately want to help Mrs H.” to “free kidney for donation, let’s find the best candidate!”

Luann says, “You’ve got to be kidneying me!”

The fact is that even if you sign a donor card there is a very low chance that your organs will be viable. You must die in a hospital where you were pronounced brain dead but kept on life support until testing and harvesting is complete. If you are dead prior to arrival the vital organs are not usable. Other parts such as corneas or ligaments may be.

Think carefully, you can’t grow a new kidney, at least not yet ! ;-)

Luann isn’t altruistic enough to donate simply for the sake of donating. She’s only thinking of doing it specifically for Mrs. Horner, which, for a variety of reasons isn’t feasible. I don’t blame her. Much better to be an organ doner after death.

He’s just not that into you, Luann. Get a clue and get a life.

This Phil guy is certainly cavalier with other peoples organs. I don’t like him.

If Mrs. Horner won’t take it, keep it, then you’ll know where it is.

OK, this is not Mary Worth. Just drop this ridiculous story. Luann seems to always get back to being a bland character, trying to “be more interesting” whatever the flavor of the day the “being interesting” has. OK, donate your flipping kidney. Then go feed the poor. Then fall in love with some educated weirdo, break with him, teach poor children in a Brazilian favela. And all of it amounts to a huge nothing burger. Why not just, you know, be funny?

Modify parasitic organisms to duplicate the function of kidneys. (They are already evolved to survive our immune systems.) Then you can meet the demands of all people.

Tomorrow we get around to “Can you stand the sight of blood?”

Like Bucky Fuller said, “Either we are alone in the universe, or we are not. Either thought is staggering.”

What’s weird is that 90,000 people in the U.S. need ONE kidney to survive and most will die because not enough people will donate one of their kidneys that they don’t need. My husband is one of those 90,000. >

What you don’t realize is that 1. Luann is an adult and decide for herself whether to give someone else the gift of life. 2. Waiting until you die to donate a kidney (the easiest organ to donate) means at least one person will die because you waited. 3. Transplant rules are NOT complicated. 4. The recipient’s insurance pays for ALL testing, ALL medicines and surgery. DONOR SHIELD pays for transportation, lodging (if necessary) and loss of wages, plus more! >

It’s always a bit weird. I won’t ever know, so I have to feel good about it here every now and then.

There are risks to donating a kidney. Any operation is risky, and we evolved to have two kidneys for a reason. I think I’d do it to for someone I knew, but not as a non-directed. If that makes me less-than-noble, oh well.

This is likely to promote organ donation. And a reminder that the good we often do we don’t see its impact, and we need to accept that.

Weird is her middle name

This arc took a morbid turn. I was hoping to see a budding friendship, not a conversation about organ donation. Luann is too young to be living with just one kidney. Would that be a risk factor in a pregnancy?
