Welcome back! Panel 2 Gunther is the old angry, growling Gunther. How I have missed him. That Gunther who made sense and who was nice to other people just didn’t seem right.

And we all saw that coming…now Bets will come in..or see him online or something hugging Tiff and rage misunderstandings will commence!

Maybe it wasn’t empathy, she was trying to get back at Bets for that restaurant incident.

I like that she could get a smile out of Gunther.

Shades of the year 2017.

As a reminder, in the Fall of that year, Tiffany was suffering from a bout of depression brought on by Ann Eiffel. Bernice, Luann and Dez found out about it, and after several failures, tapped Gunther to go and cheer her up.

If you go back the October 7th, 2017 Strip, you’ll note that Gunther is wearing the same outfit then, as today. Gunth even has the same scruffy beard. And then as now, things ended with a hug.

One more similarity. Gunther greeted Tiff today with about same “Oh it’s you” that she greeted him in the Spring of 2017, when he came pick her up for a “dinner date.”

So it’s seems We’ve come full circle here. ;)

Wait. I’m forgetting something.

Now watch by the end of the week crazy, psychotic Bets does show and catches Gunth and Tiff together. She assumes the worse as in Tiffany wanting her man all along and Bets and Tiff get into a catfight. Gunther is conflicted as to whether he should break it up or just watch as all the hair pulling and ripping of clothes drives him wild. You heard it from me first. : )

Tiffany’s “ewww” is ironic because she’s no gem herself.

I think it’s safe to conclude that this is not a romantic hug or gesture, but good thing (hopefully) growth on the part of Tiffany concerned about how GUnther is hurt after the unpleasantness over the date romantic pirate fiasco dinner. That brings up the second part of the popular prediction, Bets shows up. I hope she does, and it works out so Bets and Gunther get together (no fight with the girls) Tiffany feels better, learning more character, hilarity ensuing. Or????

No one has commented on the second little voice balloon from Gunther, saying ‘what’ in response to Tiffany saying she had something to give him. In that second frame, he doesn’t look like he’s all that interested in whatever she was going to give him, which is part of why I keep saying he looks surprised in the third frame. NOT like he’s starting to smile…

Tomorrow: Ox shows up and gives Gunther a huge hug. Then Ox and Tiff make out on Gunther’s bean bag chair.

She is returning the favor for when she needed someone when Eiffel was after her dad and he was there for her.

What a sweet apology hug. The old Tiffany wouldn’t be caught dead doing this dweeb stuff. The old would tell Gunther to snap out of it and demand a rundown of their breakup.

And to think, they were so impressed with his stubble when he got back from Peru. Now it looks awful! He needs a sideways hug, just really crush his arm.

Gunth, after all that manipulation are you really going to let Bets back into your life? I hope not!

Gunther, post THAT on your social media; nothing’s gonna motivate Bets like the thought that there might be another woman interested in you; although I can’t wrap my head around why you’d want Bets back…but maybe that’s just me.

Something a little more personal than a hug could do wonders for Gunther, or, it could leave him even more dazed and confused than he already is. Tough call.

Tiff has come as a friend when it is needed. Notice her different approach from Bernice and Luann. Like others have said, Gunther was there when she needed him.Gunther in the 2nd panel looks more matured and manly. This is good progression that could be kept.

Anyone remember when it was Tiffany in the dumps and Gunther was the one to help her out of her depression? Because I do.

The bottom like is Tiffany is changing and maturing. She is nothing like she was when she was Miss Chamber of Commerce.

Awwww….. So sweet. Tiffany likes her grumpy friend Gunther ♡. She wants to make him feel better, happier and make him knows that she will always understand and help him!. Actually, he looks better than i feared. But we can’t know about his smell right now…

What comes around goes around. Gunther was nice to her when she was down, and now she returns the favour.

Well, we called that one right yesterday.

And cue Bets coming by just in time to witness the hug, and either confront the situation with rage or go to her viewers and paint Gunther as a villainous cheater(or both).

Gun. You gotta get a handle on your emotions. Life goes on. Relationships sometimes don’t. I am not saying you need to be whistling zippy do da out of your rear; however, you do need to be able to focus on school and appreciate friends even when dealing with a break up. And, while I am dishing out advise to comic characters, stop defining yourself by your relationship status…

And Bets will walk up just in time to see the hug.

I hope they stay as friends, I don’t think any romantic relationship would work.

Why not have Ox come into the picture, and Gunther recognizes the look on Ox’s face as being the same face as he had when Bets walked out.

Anti-hilarity ensues.

And Tiffany swoops in! She doesn’t mind being the rebound girl for Gunther! He doesn’t look particularly interested yet, but that will change if she has her way, and we won’t see Bets again for a long time. Maybe she’ll show up at their wedding.

This is just a supportive hug from an old friend. Nothing more.

A kind gesture likely to greatly misinterpreted by at least one or more characters before the week is out.

Some thought Ox would show up. They might be right. Ox may indeed show up before the week is out. Along with Irma, Les, Al, Nancy, Luann, Bernice, Knute, Crystal, the harp player, and the UPS driver.

There might be a whole of “folks” offering Gunther condolences and congratulations. It would the closest the Gulag will ever come to having a “house party.”

And THEN Bets shows up, like just about * EVERYBODY* has predicted.

The question then, would be would she tell Gunther what she has to tell him, in front of a mob?

Or would she characteristically grab him by the arm, take him away to a parking lot, and then deliver the “news?”

Will she say: “I love ya, you big dummy!” Or will be “It’s time we started seeing other life-forms?”

That is before she leaves him once again, stranded in a parking lot? ;)

This surprised almost no one as we all know that this cartoon is about how the females are all growing as people.

I’m a little concerned about Gunther’s expression in the 2nd panel. is it a response to Tiff’s comment about his appearance or does he somehow blame or associate Tiffany with Bets leaving him? But he does seem happy to get a hug from her.

I appears school is still in session. Has Tiff seen Bets recently? They are in some of the same classes. Is Bets not on speaking terms with Tiff either?

Full Agree with GirlGeek here. From her past, would Tiffany have done anything REMOTELY like like before??!! … NOPE!

Tiffany closed her eyes while hugging Gunther. Do you close your eyes when giving a ‘friend’ a hug? Maybe this means something.

Tif is kind of an air head, but she has a better heart than Bets.

Only Tiffany would preface an apology with, “Eww! You’re gross!”

Sympathy and empathy from Tiffany. The apology comes tomorrow.

It seems Tiffany did keep some of her character development after all. An actual friend is what Gunther needs. I wonder if after this, we will see Tiffany go knock on Bets door. At some point we will get Bets back story as to why she bailed like she did.

Note the name on the phone in panel 3. The two weeks following this strip Greg explored the potential serious relationship between Gunther and Tiff. But she was still the svelte, flighty Tiff, wracked with the beginnings of the insecurity she felt when Daddy was just beginning a relationship with a new woman. Tiffany has “grown” tremendously in the ensuing years. Perhaps Greg is willing to give the relationship another shot. Mordy (and I) will be quite pleased if that happens.

Saturday’s strip should be these two waking up in bed together. Take this strip to the next level.

And another thing! The real reason why GnK have thrown Luann and Bernice together at the DeGroot’s has not been revealed to us yet!

I like the way Tiff’s character is developing. And this display of understanding is a great example. A long way from her bimbo / airhead / self-centred spoilt brat past, lovely to see. We still get to see some shades of her previous avatars, but that’s more than understandable, given her relatively young age. This girl is gonna be a star!

Tiff and Gunth are the couple that will never happen in this strip.

Like many comments before, now Betts walks in or knocks on the door. I give it 40 % odds vs 55% nothing happens and Tiffany just cheers him up. The last 5% is where Betts just texts Gunther their done or posts something to her Blog with a new partner.

This is just a sympathetic hug from Tiffany. If she and Gunther were interested in dating they would have dated by now. She is only showing caring and concern after she learned that Bets dumped Gunther.

going to actually address this like a “Slice of life” that it tends to be…Tiff grew up with Gunth, like most the other girls, even if she doesn’t seem him as potential romance, especially since his big trip, he’s grown up a lot in her eyes and she’s gained much respect for him when he helped her early in college. He’s never been judgmentally harsh with her and I think she was honestly hoping to build a friendship with Bets before her temper went on a rampage.

now… Last time Tiffany saw Gunth, it was for him to have a romantic dinner with Bets.She didn’t have any issue with the costumes, He didn’t have any issue with Tiffany’s theme.He was more than happy with it, interesting food, nice atmosphere.

But Bets couldn’t get over it not being what SHE wanted.

Now, they storm out, Gunther really only leaving because his girlfriend is storming out

so far as Tiff knew, they went somewhere else, Bets cooled down and life was great. Now as she’s celebrating her project (and the first significant success since going into a business major) she finds out her friend and frequent supporter was dumped in that same storm, she doesn’t know that Bets pretty much “shorted out” when Gunth said he loved her (I say shorted out because she was already emotional and the moment put her into overload. Perhaps she got scared because he said he loved her and realized she was “being a monster” or perhaps as many others muse, her true love is social media and she realized she didn’t have feelings for the “prop boyfriend”.

I get why Gunther is moody and shut down over it, as he doesn’t have any closure, though I’d be curious given Bet’s love of media if he’s not following her – It would say a lot about her personality if she was still on social media doing her thing for her “fans” or if she went into “shut down” mode.

Gunther flings open the door, happily shouting; “BETS!”

When he sees it isn’t Bets, his hopes are dashed, and he goes: “Oh, it’s you."

I think that if Bets does show up like a lot of people are predicting, Gunther will be so busy apologizing to her for upsetting her, and just fawning over her in general, that he won’t even remember Tiff is in the room.

I’ve speculated for years now on the possibility of Gunther and Tiffany becoming a couple.

The arrival of Bets at this moment, and what would probably occur because of that, could end up being a huge shove in that direction.

A while later, he emerges fresh from the shower and wearing only his bathrobe, in a role reversal from 2015/05/12. Then Bets arrives. …

For the next instalment of this cereal, tune in tomorrow! More inane arguments bringing up two year old unrelated events, more attempts to rely on Star Trek episodes, more technical definitions, more trolling, and more half truths!

Tiff has changed since high school, but I don’t think she’s changed enough to be interested in Gunther. Pre-pandemic, when people in Mooney were still in dorms, she was making a play for Kip the Quarterback. She still wants a Quarterback.

Ox is a mere football player – a great guy who is interested in her and supportive of her endeavors, but he’s not a Quarterback.

Gunther is a lovable smart guy who is a good friend and helpful and supportive, but he’s not a Quarterback.

The pandemic will end, and in the context of Luann, that probably means that people will return to dorms, and when that happens, the Stef/Kip triangle storyline will return. No room for Gunther in that at the moment. It would be fun for Stef and Gunther to suddenly find something in common and make it a quadrangle, but I doubt GnK will go there.

Poor Gunther! Before this started, all he wanted to do was algebraic topology and vector calculus. Tiff got an “A” for her homework. What did he get? Isn’t that the most important thing? How is Gunther doing? He, not Bets or Tiff, is the real victim here, if there is one.

I love that Tiffany is acting like a real friend and giving Gun a much-needed hug. However, I wonder if part of it is that she feels guilty about what happened.

I’m happy about the friendship hug. Tiff feels bad for Gunther. Also, he was there for her when she was in the dumps. I certainly don’t see any romantic notions coming out of this, but I do see them sitting down and having a heart-to-heart. Annnnnd, possibly Bets will see them through the window and get the wrong idea. I just hope Bets is out of the picture for good. She’s no good for Gunther.
