Bernice calling Luann “judgy and nosy” is a bit rich, considering she’s the one who had a drinking glass up to Luann’s door and later followed her around town in the middle of the night. But apparently the whole “Tara sleeping at the Fuse” thing has been tossed down the ol’ Memory Hole already.
More Nancy-Bernice bonding. She already has already made inroads with Frank. And made them in the way of the world… through his stomach, with crepes, at breakfast. I’m a bit surprised that Bernice’s mother was even brought up.
Hilarity ensued. While finishing the arc I should say. Basically Nancy adroitly tells Bern to relax and enjoy her youth, while throwing Luann and dad—playfully—under the bus. Verity and family. Quaint.
So is Nancy is advising Bernice to have fun how? Keep snogging Nil and pining after Jack? Go after Jack with a vengeance? What about her scholarship? Was this a Dog Park type of watershed moment; like Jack quitting football?
I’m suspicious that this is just another episode in the string of episodes that characterizes Luann the Comic Strip. And we’ll see more of the same from Bernice and all of our favorite characters. Speaking of characters. Isn’t it time for Les to make an appearance?
I am extremely disappointed in Nancy. I expect “practically perfect Bernice” to call Luann “FAR worse—far more “judgy” and nosy.” But how can Nancy turn against her own daughter? Neither of these two people deserves Luann. I REALLY want Luann to move out, and leave backstabbing Nancy and Bernice to gossip together alone. They deserve each other. By the way. Bernice believes herself to be highly intelligent. She should learn the word “judgmental”.
I think Luann would be better off if she dumped Bernie. Years ago, Bernie and Delta took a road trip and slammed Luann. Now, Bernie and Luann’s mom are slamming Luann. And, as far as nosy goes, just who was it outside Luann’s door with a water glass between her ear and the door? Yeah, I thought so.
Well, Nancy knows who Luann is. Unlike many in here who think Luann is the cat’s meow. People say Bernice is dramatic – they forget that Luann always has been dramatic also. More so.
Bernice’s parents give birth to Ben York in college before they married and decided to give him up for adoption. This fact has affected Bernice. Luann does not respect the boundaries of her friends and can be judgmental. Yes, Frank Degroot has been opinionated throughout this series, and Frank is …
Glad to see how Nancy manages to calm and comfort Bernice and how she finds Nancy way better than her mother. With her support, Bernice can try to figure out if she prefers Nil or Jack without feeling like a lustful monster, finally! But I’m disappointed in Nancy. Luann may be nosy, but judgy… that’s not a term that makes you immediately think of her, quite the contrary; Luann is the exact opposite of judgy. She has shown many times to have an open mind and a lot of understanding for everyone. Bernice is the one who has always been judgy, above everyone, even on herself! I blame her mother.
I did not think that Nancy was one of those parents who would say : “Well she is YOUR daughter.” to their spouse, but judging by her comments with Bern she very well could be. I did not think she would say something negative about Luann to Bern but she just did it, perhaps we can blame the “hot flashes” for this faux pas? Also, not too cool for Bernice to pile on at the end, she could have simply said “No, I was going to say my Mom.” and left it at that.
Lets see some of Gunnie and Bets next week or some dorm room drama with Tiff and the gang.
And so another week ends with Bernice being given anodyne advice which she will promptly ignore. Meaning this week has been another circle jerk. Next week it will be other to another character, mostly likely Tiffany and her problems living with a nymphomaniac, which will not advance either.
What would be interesting is that Monday as Bernice leaves the room the room and Luann walks in demanding to know what her mother means by saying she’s nosy and judgemental. Remember on Friday Bernice yelled out I’m a nymphomaniac is tones loud enough to wake the dead — and also Luann. That would make for an interesting conversation. “Mom, why do you hate me so?” “When have I been nosy or judgemental?” “Why are you talking about me behind my back?” That would be a juicy week of strips!
Luann is human, lovable, and has some faults like the rest of us. Bernice is obsessive, regimented, and just irritating. I’m not really happy with Nancy right now for throwing her daughter under the bus.
Looks like We’ve gone from “Black Friday,” to “Hypocrisy Saturday.”
Bernice’s unmitigated GALL at thinking there’s someone more “nosy and judgmental” that her, I can understand. She’s major hypocrite. Always has been.
Nancy is the real stunner here, back stabbing both Luann AND Frank. I guess all those years of Luann not cleaning her room have taken their toll.
Two take aways from this arc:
1) When it comes to BFF’s, most of the Strip’s young women have guys NOT gals in that role.Tiffany has at least three guys (and counting) that would pretty much do anything for her. Stef, Bets and Luann have at least one each. The jury is still out on what Bernice has got. If anything. Bottom line is, if you want a close pal in this Strip, make sure it’s someone of the opposite sex.
2) I’m beginning to see the main reason why Toni doesn’t want to have a child. Not because she’s afraid. But maybe because she doesn’t want to make the hypocritical Nancy, (the woman that once regarded Toni with contempt) a “grandmother.”
So, there it is. The friend/friend relationship got so awkward, just like the daughter/mother relationship, so the writers forced a fake daughter/fake mom storyline. But it’s pretty obvious that Bernice is the expert on judgeyness and nosiness. And that’s one judgey fake mom.
Perhaps the “dilemma” could be easily resolved, if Jack simply told Bernice that he likes her but isn’t interested in dating her. That’s why it won’t happen, of course.
Nancy and Bernice win the prize for biggest a**holes in this comic strip. When they finish with their mutual admiration society maybe they can develop some loyalty toward their real family members. I have found this whole story line and the character actions to be really disappointing. It does tell me what kind of screwed up values Karen has though. It would have broken my heart to hear my own mother speaking about me like this with my best friend.
At least we know where Bernice gets it from now. Honestly, I hope Luann was around the corner so she can hear how her “best friend” and her mom really feel about her.
Where would Luann get a judgmental side? Most of her good qualities, like giving and helping, come from her parents. Any bad qualities she may have gotten from certain of her experiences with her friends, like Bernice, maybe.
Wow, I really dislike Luann’s mom more and more. If she’s supposed to be the voice of reason, this was a big fail. All she ever does is snark on her own daughter. Maybe Luann can land that great job on her own and get a place of her own.
Before Nancy winds up to throw Frank under the bus (again), Frank provides adequate reources that she doesn’t have to work. Through Frank, the DeGroots own rental properties. Nancy chose to work at the Fuse.
Bernice should enjoy it while she can. I was the Archie in a Betty & Veronica sandwich throughout high school and enjoyed every minute of it. I had it better than Archie because the two girls were good friends. Very good friends.
Along with a number of other comics, I have been following the Luann comic strip for several decades. Within the past year unfortunately, the quality of the writing is suffering. Of course the DeGroot family have their flaws and weaknesses. I’ll probably get some flak, but I am convinced that Karen does not have the experience in writing strong and positive story arcs like her father. In years past, Greg was somewhat masterful in writing adventurous story arcs regarding Luann, Frank, Nancy, Brad, Toni, Delta, Tiffany, Gunther, TJ, and the ever devious Ann Eiffel. Now it seems that the characters are portrayed with little, if any sense of responsibility at all.Luann can secretly enter her parents’ business at night, allow others in and have Tara nearly killed. Luann can also allow people to come into her bedroom at night. Cute little Shannon can throw childish fits, throw things at people and is not punished. Tara can being lethal weapons on school property and thereby endanger children.Today Nancy tells Bernice to simply do her own thing while dissing Frank and Luann in favor of Bernice. At times, I ask where is the comedy in this comic strip?
Why not call it a day already and rename this strip Bernice. Let someone else handle Luann from now on as everyone who snarks on her would be happy to stay with St Bernice and the rest of us messy humans would follow Luann.
One of the lines in the justly-famous rundown of maternal worries about her son, set to the William Tell overture, is “You’re too old to act this way / I blame your father’s DNA”.
I’ve often wondered why Luann and Bernice are friends. Bernice is pretty much always critical and judgemental of Luann. And Luann just goes with her friends constant attitude. Of course I am trying to second guess fictional characters.

She’s in college!! Luann is old enough to start a long term relationship that may or may not be permanent, however, at least give her a chance!!Finally, Nancy has lost all respect in my book. What kind of mother put downs her own child in front of the child’s friend! That’s an unforgiveable action on Nancy’s part and putting her husband down too.Hmmmm…maybe Frank and Luann should move out of that toxic environment. Just sayinnnn………
