When this strip was reprinted five years ago, someone wrote “Calvin is surprisingly honest about what happened. No monsters! No aliens! Just ‘we’ meaning ’I”." Calvin is, of course, being totally honest. Hobbes did help Calvin to push the car and it was Hobbes who suggested running away by telling Calvin, “I can be packed in five minutes.” He was wrong, of course, he was still trying to decide what to pack after Calvin had made the sandwiches.
Also, Calvin says in the first panel, “You’re going to kill us,” rather than “You’re going to kill me.”
What I like about this is the fact that Calvin, as bad or mischievous as he can be at times, did not lie at all. Straight up told the whole truth. Good for him.
I wonder just how high Calvin and Hobbes were in the tree when he implored Hobbes to “Climb Higher!” when they paused in the tree the other day and notice the “bear” coming through the brush. He doesn’t seem to have reached a height were he would be out of a bear’s reach right now, although the height perspective seems to change from panel to panel in todays strip.
It was her or his father’s fault. They park a car on the edge of a downhill slope with no parking brake or not in “park”? Best not to let child services hear about it.
The Mom figured Calvin accidentally sent it rolling into the ditch and tried to go on the lam for it, and even though there was no damage, she was more concerned for Calvin’s safety.
This actually happened to me when I was 15 or so. I was trying to roll the car out so I could wash it (I’d found you could jimmy the shift so it was out of park), but it kept going, curving across the yard where it hit a big tree. A little bumper damage, but as it was a 5 year old car, no problem. But I got chewed out for it.
Then a couple years later, this arc came out. Mom clipped the entire series and put it up on the wall.
There is a saying in the journalism business, attributed to Arnold A. Dornfeld, former night editor of the City News Bureau of Chicago, that says “If your mother says she loves you, check on it.”
It is similar to a Russian proverb once quoted by President Ronald Reagan: “Trust, but verify.”
Mom just realized what the parking brake is for, and it was her fault for not setting it. Now she has to figure out what to tell hubby. Soon we will see what she does and what he does.
One of my favorite arcs is the baby raccoon. Calvin finds an injured/sick baby raccoon and brings it home. Mom is honest and says she doesn’t know how to help it, but she helps Calvin fix up a bed in a box for it and get it settled in the garage. The next morning Calvin runs out to the garage, only to find the raccoon has died. Dad is there and tells Calvin that it is sad that baby animal died, but at least it died warm and safe. Both parents are great in this story.
My Mom has always told us she loved us, no matter what, even when we weren’t getting along but since my sister passed away almost 7 months ago she says it more to me than before, whether talking to me on the phone or over emails ( she lives 4200 miles away) or when she is on phone with Dad she always tells him to make sure he tells me she loves me. I have found myself doing the same with her. When you lose someone so close and it is unexpected like my sister it really shows you how much family matters and the love you have for them and they have for you is very important. Dad ddin’t grow up in a home that was very loving and they never showed love to each other or said it much so he has a hard time saying it but the day he told me my sister was in the hospital very sick, the day she wouldn’t wake up from her coma and the day she was taken off life support and died he told me and showed me his love.Parents always tell you children you love them even when they have done something wrong or that angers you and children always tell your parents you love them even when they seem to be overbearing, you never know when you won’t have them around or when you will need them emotional. Or even my situation with my Mom that I know I will never see her again because of the distance she lives and her age and health problems, she will be 74 in 2 months and neither of us are in good enough health to travel to see the other.

I haven’t read the entire series. Has mom actually said, “I love you” to Calvin?

A car rolled into a ditch with no damage? Incredible! And while Mom may be OK with the situation, there’s no guarantee that Dad won’t pop his cork!

Not hitting anything, he is lucky, look at June 10, 2024 strip it just missed hitting a fire hydrant by a couple feet.

Did I miss something? Shouldn’t Mom be shaking tree while calling Calvin ungrateful and complaining he she carried him for nine months?

Don’t get TOO cozy, Calvin! Your tight-fisted dad won’t be as forgiving or understanding as Mom!
