This is an unexpected development! It looks like it’s taking longer than expected for Tiffany to make up her mind. On the other hand she seems to have already quit the Fuse leaving Nancy short-handed. I wonder if, by weeks end, Luann will be waitressing for her mom? (which would be a good move for L.
And here We’re seeing an example of “difficult customers.”
Beginning to see more and more of them these days.
Don’t be so sure Nancy made a mistake here.
Some “folks” I know in real life make a point of being the “difficult customer” thinking they’ll get more or free food as compensation.
Their idea of a “good” tip is 50 cents to a buck.
And some “folks” wonder why other people would rather sit home collecting a Gov-Mint check than working in a restaurant.
That aside, maybe Nan’s got something on her mind. Or perhaps the Fuse needs more help. Could be that this week, We may be wondering “who” the new Fuse employee will be, whereas last week, We were wondering “who” the fourth roommate will be. Perhaps they’ll be one and the same.
And We’ll probably never get to see these two ladies again after this arc.
Rudeness and “age-shaming” aside, they seemed semi-interesting. ;)
Very accurate of the younger generation these days. No respect whatsoever. I was raised to respect and listen to those older than me, to learn and gain wisdom and insight. And I did. Especially from those from “The greatest generation” that went through WW2. Many of those in that generation simply amazed and awed me. Now kids call us “boomers” like it’s an insult somehow.
One of the biggest reasons why folks in the hospitality industry aren’t returning to their jobs right now is the fact that a lot of them caught COVID from customers (or are fearful of getting it now) because customers don’t want to wear masks, and a lot are not vaccinated. That is a big risk to take for a job that usually pays less than minimum wage because the expectation is that the customer will tip (except that the server has to split the tip with the bus person, the line cook, etc.)
Ugh, baby Karens. Nancy will probably stay calm and rant later, but we know she’s not scared to throw people out if they go after her staff so if the girls have any brain cells, that’ll be the only comments Nancy hears. I can see this reflecting one of those stories where a customer is being a snob and tries to play the “I know the owner” card without realizing the owner has been serving them the whole time.
So, we shall see if this week’s strip is gonna be Nancy getting home and venting (and possibly worrying about her age) or if it’s gonna be about her putting these customers in their place.
How do they know she’s a granny? She doesn’t look like one. Sheesh. To them anyone older than themselves are grannies. Nancy needs to call Tiff (out of her work uniform of course) and seat her with those girls so she could insult them – perhaps critique their clothes or makeup or hair. Or the Snark Queen. Put those girls in their place.
So where is this going? [Aside: So I started a sentence with “So”. So sue me.]
1) One of these rude customers ends up becoming the 4th suite-mate with Dez, Stef, and Tiff? [Suggested by RQ and by Mordy.]
2) One of them says something about somebody Nancy happens to know, and Nancy—sans hearing aids—can’t help overhearing? (And if so, what do they say about whom, and with what result?)
3) They become more and more difficult customers, perhaps including claiming to “know the owner” [as suggested by hermit48], imagining that Nancy will be intimidated? (And if so, how will Nancy react?)
4) Tomorrow, they finish their drinks and depart, never to be seen again, leaving Nancy with a 10¢ tip and leaving us to wait until Wednesday (or late Tuesday for west-coast folk) for the real start of this week’s arc?
Looks like these young “ladies” forgot the First Rule – “Always be kind to your wait staff.” There “corrected” tea just might have a little “something extra” in it (e.g. a hocked loogie). Just a thought…
If you don’t have anything nice to say, make sure the waiter or waitress doesn’t hear you… never know what you’ll be getting back with your order! This is not a joke!
This is definitely an awesome design for two annoying casual teens♡. I hope they will become regular customers of the Café. Although, Nancy may not be exactly happy about it. I wonder if Tiffany will tell Nancy about her return to the dorm and maybe ask for advices. Seeing the two talk about it would be interesting.
Is Nancy distracted from Luann’s announcement from yesterday? (I know, Sundays are usually stand alone, but, there has to be a reason for Nancy to be distracted at work.)
Nancy is only in her 40s right? That is pretty much the prime for a woman. In your forties the body is still strong, the brain has finally been reasonably educated (if diligent), and the combo along with the age and hard work usually puts a person past those “need to please everyone” thirties.
Those two should be jealous of Nancy rather than putting her down, though I suspect they are engaging in an intersection of ageism and classism worsened by some learned stereotypical misogyny.
It will come as no surprise that in Luann’s family every few generations there is a Chosen One, she who is destined to wear the mantle of Crazed Albanian Phrenologist. Luann obviously has noticed the wordplay with Luna in her name despite the misleading extra “n” and has decided to accept the ritual challenge. When you soon see her decked in a 1918 swimsuit hung with bells (property of the previous Chosen One) while dancing with flaming swords you WILL understand. Personally, I think she has it in her!
p.s. Extra imaginary points to the people who correctly identify the movies by name and year that are referenced in my post on Luann’s to-be-attempted path.
The dark side of youth. I’ve met a few nasty young women like this. I always tell them Honey when you are my age I hope you are as happy as I am and look half as good! It shuts them right up. Women can be pretty awful to each other, especially when it comes to age. I hope Nancy teaches them a lesson. They need it. The satisfaction I get from all of this is age is the great equalizer. If you are a mean woman while young and lucky to live a long life some snarky young thing is gonna try and make YOU miserable!
Typical response to somebody who didn’t hear something. People with hearing loss and/or mental health issues are ridiculed / laughed at.
Hearing loss is usually permanent, wear some hearing protection. By the time you realize you should have, its too late. I know. Younger people think it is so “Cool” that I have bluetooth to my iPhone and can listen without people knowing I am listening to something else. I would swap a boatload of “Cool” to get my hearing back to normal.
Mental health is another issue. A friend went through depression and it is amazing how even though they are fine now, the question “Have you ever been treated for … or Have you ever suffered from” appears all sorts of places. If you broke a leg you would see a doctor so if you have mental health issues, wouldn’t you see a doctor? Of course not! There would be a record of it and it will “mark you” for life.
While on my rank, you don’t have to scream if somebody wears hearing aids, it may be a loss at a certain frequency. Raise you voice a little but don’t start speaking so loud. Had a customer the other day raise their voice and I had to ask them to speak quieter.
I think the insult is a McGuffin. I admit it is not my original thought, but skimming through the comments I saw one where the muse was over what might be distracting Nancy. There might be something to that thought,. but it as good as any other at this point. Maybe a twofer? Handle these two ignorant customers and a new arc leading too…?
Ok, not cool. Real world but not cool. Always treat others the way you want to be treated. Correcting a server on an order happens, be polite. If there server has multiple problems you don’t have to give as big a tip and maybe make a comment on the receipt, especially if you paid with a credit card. Btw, if the server has done an outstanding job give the tip a nice bonus and make a positive comment about them there.
I agree will the entire line of posting above. People who presume superiority over others for ANY reason – let alone something as moronic and detestable as ageism – SHOULD NOT BE BREATHING OUR AIR.
Two entitled people who have obviously NEVER worked a job dealing with the public. Working a few months in retail, especially over Christmas or at a summer beach resort will wipe those snarky remarks right out of their brains.
Seems Tiffany is off tracking down Stefani with her bribe. These two women need lessons in manners. Hope Nancy doesn’t take their comments to heart and quit. I’ll bet they are lousy tippers as well! Good waitstaff have my admiration for dealing with some customers.
We’ve had terrible service in many restaurants since we started dining out again in May. They are all short staffed since no one wants or needs to work. We are extremely patient and understanding, but it is frustrating to finish eating and not be able to leave because we cannot get our check.
Only in California would a woman like Nancy be considered to look old. Of course if she wanted revenge on the girls she could tell them that they dress like her daughter.
the flip side of what Nancy experienced previously, i.e. from the nice looking guy at the bar. adolescent kids think that anyone over 30 is ancient. probably they also think that only kids their age wait tables in restaurants.
Kids raised prior to the 1960s were often under the shadow of stuff like “children should be seen and not heard,” and other forms of strict discipline. Many kids gained a sense of empowerment against adults during the hippie era and the punk area – in some ways a good thing and other ways not. This often resulted in lampooning adult responsibilities. Drugs helped some to forego thinking about how they would support themselves eventually. In short, in some eras, adults needed deveop more respect for kids, and then later vice versa. A sad example of young arrogance is the teen character in the movie Juno saying to her father, “Silencio, old man.” In today’s toon, I hope most if not all readers think these young women are so not cool. I mean we all love Nancy…
Those stupid twentysomething women, am I right? It’s a good thing Luann will never become one of them, instead having the mind of a thirteen-year-old (and a fairly dimwitted one at that) until the end of time
Are there any restaurateurs (fast-food franchisees included) reading this? If so, what would happen to one of your employees if you found out they had engaged in the sorts of “revenge” on a customer—even a rude one—that many commenters are suggesting above? And what do you think would happen to your business if the local health department or other relevant authorities found out that you, an owner, had intentionally tampered with a customer’s food or beverage?
Nancy: “Hey, girls – that pee yellow Mustang you guys drove up in, it is belching fire and burning down in the parking lot. But before you go, that will be $11.73 – no tip necessary…”
Having spent some time in the Southern US, I found that a lot of people order ‘sweet tea’ (which IS sweetened, by the way) when they mean ‘iced tea with a lot of sweetener’. I have to wonder if the customers are from the south…
There’s a litmus test for whether a person is good enough for you to get into a relationship with. Look at how they treat people they have power over, like waitresses, sales people, dogs….

Judging by Nancy’s expression, those two are going to pay very dearly for their rude behavior. At least, I sincerely hope so!

Since we seem to be on a “iced pee” jag today:
Nancy: “Hey, girls – that pee yellow Mustang you guys drove up in, it is belching fire and burning down in the parking lot. But before you go, that will be $11.73 – no tip necessary…”

Another illustration of the generation that prides itself on being non-judgemental, being….judgemental.

Nancy should have an accident. Maybe “accidentally” spill some hot tea on those two girls.

My thought is if you order “tea” you want it hot. If you want iced tea, you order “iced tea”.

@PAR85:

I’d say about an ounce of liquid nitrogen ought to ice it, but she may have trouble getting her spoon back out before she drinks it

We need 24 hour a day recorders. Check if she said “iced tea” or just the ambivalent “tea.”
