Both of Bernice’s ideas would require licensing and bonding first. And Luann (or her parents) don;t have that kindn of money. It’s all tied up in The Fuse. At least Luann’s youth theater program could be staged inside the Fuse but would not likely paid her anything like a living wage.

Directing Youth Theater has possibilities. She has shown an aptitude in the performing arts.

She’s opening her mind to other possibilities. That’s a breakthrough and I think Bernice is being a great friend/therapist right there.

Yes, you are looking for the FUN again, Luann, without taking into consideration whether these jobs could support you financially as in moving out of your parents’ house and into a place of your own. Bernice is suggesting the jobs that would provide you that independence.

Did Luann quit her job as Tutor?

Back when dinosaurs roamed he earth and I was in grade school we would have an art instructor come in once a week or so, working with the student on how to express themselves through art. This sounds like something Luann would enjoy as opposed to drilling into the squishy skulls of 4th graders English declension and spelling. I think there were also visiting music instructors and why not visiting theater directors.

I love where this is going! Luann looks so happy! She now she can see a lot more possibilities. She can go back to studying theater (or start studying seriously to learn how to be a cartoonist…?). She could start using The Fuse’s theatre to do her courses, as she had attempted to do with dear Prudence. It will be difficult, but it could really be a wonderful future for her ♡!

Many people have great ideas for running their own business and would be enjoyable and provide a service but are not able to make a living off of it and thus the jobs are never created.

Are we just yelling ideas now? Kickboxing! Grocery store clerk! Stripper! Gold prospector! Just don’t be a cop cuz, y’know, ACAB.

In the real world, these career ideas would be more like hobbies. Teaching theatre to kids, teaching cartooning to kids, it’s all great and would be a good Hallmark movie, but she wouldn’t immediately start making a predictable wage that could be counted on to pay her bills. But of course, we all know she will pursue one of these ideas and it will probably involve using someone else’s property without their permission. Luann is just looking for something where she can go play every day. She has no work ethic or sense of responsibility. Until that changes, I don’t see anyone willingly entrusting their children to her. Her job at Kids 1st was supervised by the public school system, which provided some assurances. I would never take my child to some hole in the wall pop up being run by a teenage misfit. What are her credentials? How will she pay for insurance? How will she rent space? How will she qualify for licensing? How will she make repairs needed to meet code? She would be much better off getting a paying job at a daycare that might be interested in adding her ideas to their curriculum.

And why is Bernice lecturing anyone on “making a living”? She has no income and is living rent free.

Summer programs for kids take in gobs of money. And there would be year round opportunities for developing enrichment programs and classes. For once, Bernice said something useful. Lu just needs to throw a minor in business into her plans.

That’s not a real job, Luann. I taught cartooning for a while. It was a load of fun but unfortunately not enough money to live on. More of that “fun summer camp vibe” she loves so much. She could become an art teacher at the college level. She seems to have a talent for it or else Zeebo wouldn’t have selected her as his TA.

Teaching youth theater could be a way for Luann to reconnect with Oz…

Teaching cartooning is a terrible idea for Luann. She has no experience drawing or writing a cartoon. The demand for that service would be very small. Not many people would pay to learn cartooning.

Bernice is making a common mistake that people make when suggesting jobs for others – not taking into account how difficult it can be to make an affordable salary with many of those alternative careers. I used to have people tell my to quit my Civil Service job (which admittedly I wasn’t all that happy with) and gamble my money on a start up, or take a more fun but minimum wage job. What those people tended to have in common (and I realize this is unlike Bernice) was that they had a spouse making a lot of money so they could take a chance on a risky career endeavor.) Many if not most teachers struggle with affording housing in California. Bernice’s suggested careers are likely to pay even less (with no benefits).

Figuring out what you want to be at this age is difficult for a lot of people. Even college doesn’t guarantee a job.

Its nice to have a LuAnn arc where she isn’t used as an idiot to advance plot for someone else.

How is Luann going to teach cartooning when she doesn’t even KNOW cartooning? It’s more than just being able to draw something; it also involves the art of storytelling, and Luann has never been shown with any skill or education in that particular craft. But I suppose this was more of a meta-gag than anything else. Though it had the side effect of making Luann look like even more of a dim bulb, so I’m not sure it was worth it. Maybe let the poor girl have some dignity once in a while?

Oh, and it looks like the mention of “directing youth theater” means that Luann and Pru’s failed Drama Camp has been officially tossed down the Memory Hole and erased from continuity, much like Pru herself was a few months after her departure.
