If Gunther doesn’t know if they’re still a couple.. they’re NOT a couple! Looks like Bets didn’t love Gunther as much as she said she did.
So will Gunther answer “I don’t know” to everything, so that people will buy Karen’s book to actually know something?? LOL
.
I won’t be buying the booklet. They shouldn’t have told us they would send us their van adventures to our email, if we joined their site.. and then do nothing but try to sell us a novella. That just stinks.
So it appears a split has already occurred! A split of wills with each going their own way. This can result in a lack of trust on the pert of our usually Pollyanna Gunther. He may think “What is Bets up to on her obvious flight of freedom? School is starting, does she intend to return at all?” These would be the kinds of thoughts that poison a relationship.
Led is not wrong about Gunther not knowing more about Bets by now. If after spending all of that time together, Gunther still doesn’t know more about her as a person, than he did when they first met, then did he ever really know her at all?
Run—er, drive away, Bets! Otherwise you’ll be caught in a spiral of never-consummated innuendo. Just don’t end up at 9 Chickweed Lane, that place is even worse!
So now we know the story. They had a tire mishap, and they were involved in a ravioli fiasco. They were embarrassed by “Creepy campers” probably looking into their van windows at night. The parking brake failed, but they and the van survived. They roasted as they crossed a desert because the A.C. failed. The engine blew, but they managed to get a rebuilt engine installed. Bets wanted to continue on, so she obviously won’t be in the dorm. Someone will take her place there, but who? Gunther returned to be able to start the fall semester at college. So, now I don’t think it matters what happened on their trip. We already know enough about it to simply want to move on and find out if Bets will return.
So we don’t know if Bets was getting a lot out of this trip, or if it was just that she didn’t feel welcome at Al & Irma’s. I hope she doesn’t disappear like Rosa. Bets was more interesting than Rosa.
Well, they ARE broken up. Gunther is saying the “I don’t know” because he has his head in the sand. He doesn’t want to face his failures. It is not a failure – Bets is Bets. She is the #1 in her life and nobody else. Not your fault, Gunther. You did nothing wrong. You tried to play along with whatever she wants but you did draw a line at continuing with the camper van living – you prioritized your education over this flighty road trip. Yep, you guys are broken up. Bets needs a guy who is genuinely interested in what she does. You merely played along – you were never really into what Bets was doing with her Snapgram. You swallowed up Bets’ dismissiveness toward you. You just wanted a girlfriend and you thought she should be good enough but she was not the right fit. There is plenty of time for you to find your Mrs Right. A lot of folks in here think it is Luann but I am not too sure. Let Bets go. (another reason is a lot of us don’t like her anyway and don’t miss her…I wonder if GnK realized that and wrote her out of the strip?)
Poor Gunther. He was only able to stretch mama’s umbilical cord just so far before hit snapped him back home. Meanwhile Bets is ready to get out in the world and get her life started. He’s all wrong for her. He may be all wrong for everyone.
Irma knew that a few weeks in such close quarters would either make or break them. If they could handle it for that long, they could handle it forever.
Apparently, they could not, although now they know. You know?
Kinda sad that Bets has decided to leave everything just because she wants to continue her trip.I wonder if this mean she has also suspended college or that she will be taking online courses. Will she tell Dez and Tiffany? I think Dez may be on her side, but Tiffany would immediately think about Gunther. Also, Gunther looks sad, but he seems a lot less depressed than when she left him after he confessed to her. This experience together has shown him a Bets that he didn’t know and that maybe he dont like… Maybe it will be good for both of them.
Actually Gunther has learned quite a few things if he’d just open his eyes:
One – He’s learned why Bets had so many “lying and cheating” ex-boyfriends in her life. Difference is, THEY didn’t let her get away with it. And PS: She told him about that on the first date. Major RED FLAG.
Two – Bets (like Rosa), had her own agenda. And You NEVER trust anyone with their OWN agenda, no matter how “cute” she looks.
Three – Bets abandoned him once before, but he learned nothing and foolishly took her back. Gunther needs to make sure there’s no THIRD time.
Four – Gunther should Never, Ever, EVER, take another gal home to meet his meddling mother. In fact, if he ever gets married, he shouldn’t even let his mom get within 10 miles of his kids.
Now.
Get ready, Gunther.
The grilling (and eventual snarking) you’re getting from Les is nothing compared to what you’re going to be subjected to once Luann Bernice and Tiffany find out what happened. :-(
I agree, that this stinks. Tom Batiuk (Funky Winkerbean, Crankshaft) published “Lisa’s Story” as a collection of all the strips involving Lisa Moore, including her battle with cancer and her passing AFTER the arcs had come to an end.
If you have a truly compelling story, as that was, people would gladly buy the book. And a portion of the proceeds were earmarked for cancer research plus the creation of a charity called Lisa’s Legacy. This just seems like a cash grab.
OK, this is so simple. If a series of events are not important to the overall progress of the story, then they are an unneeded subplot. If the optional subplot is necessary to follow the main story, or to understand the characters, then the writers are unskilled. So, if the subplot is unnecessary, it won’t matter if I skip it. If the subplot IS necessary, then the writing is bad and I am doing myself a favor by skipping it.
And all of this must, supposedly, be the evening of the day the truck arrived with Bets and Gunnie if Les hasn’t had a chance to ask the question until now?
Dead ends is almost a guarantee recipe for a closure of saying good bye / exit stage left. After a 3 / 4 year? run of his happiness, it’s time to snap back to just plain Gun for another few years. May not be around to see him happy and hooked up again though.
How did I know the van trip was going to end their relationship. I think I even commented this wasn’t going to end well. But at the same time. this was likely Gunthers moms plan the whole time.
If critics of the Gun and Bets novella offer took a realistic look at the state of newsprint comics where the real money was traditionally earned they’d understand why the Evans team is exploring changes to that once reliable business model. I don’t expect that plushies of Luann characters are in the planning stage—well maybe Puddles featuring live action squeeze ‘n stream—but there are plenty of successful online comic creators who give away content and then sell some form of insider goodies (print collections with personal annotations and rough art, magnets and other imprinted hard goods, exclusive arcs, etc.) to a subset of that fan base. Heck, I’m sure AI is coming after me to do coloring work. Anybody want to buy my stories about pain-in-the-rear cartoonists and coloring mishaps? I’ve got a million of ’em. Operators are standing by.
It is now the 24th. The “Advertisement” ran on the 23rd. The “Advertisement” offer is good until the 28th. If the “Advertisement” does not appear again between now and the 28th, I’d like to think it was because Andrews McMeel said, “You can’t do this.”
Are Les and Gunther bonding at last? I don’t know, will Tiffany re-enter the scene? I don’t know. Was the taxi driver a metaphor for Gun’s failed relationship with Rosa and was used to give us a hint to the breakup? I don’t know…
Blast! It appears they wrote out Bets, the best of the new characters. She was drawn good in a Star Trek uniform. Of the new breed of characters we’re left with an ultra-weird artist, a cheer leader out of the 1980s, and a child with mental issues who destroys her foster parents furniture.
Called it! (As a lot of us did). Bets turned into Rosa, Part Two, and got bit by the travel bug. Honestly, I support this. People who are able to travel, should! The world is big and wonderful and should be seen firsthand, not on the internet. But I get where Gunther’s coming from too. Eventually, the travel has to end and it’s time to return home. Gunther did plenty with Rosa before college anyway.
Sounds like the trip did teach Gunther some important things about Bets, about himself, and about their relationship. I think the “I don’t knows” are not because he doesn’t know her as Les said but because Gunther has started letting go. Where is she? Will she come back? Not his problem anymore. And perhaps he’s started to realize he never really had a hold on her. Their relationship wasn’t that strong to begin with. They liked being together, but that’s all.
A good way to know whether they’re still a couple — or whether they still have a chance — is if Gunther called or texted her to let her know he’s home. Her response (or lack of one) will tell him everything he needs to know.
A lot of criticism on this storyline is aimed at Betts, and she deserves some of it, but it’s obvious to me that the authors have decided that the only stable relationship that Gunthie will ever have with a female will be with his Mama. He has wound up frustrated with interactions with Luann (remember her?), Bernice, Tiff, Rosa, Betts and maybe some more we don’t know about. No woman will ever meet his very narrow standards, and although he projects the image of having great patience and tolerating conditions he doesn’t agree with, he is in actuality very selfish and gets angry when things or people don’t conform to his shortcomings. And, I’m suprised that he still has friends that sympathize and support him. Maybe Les will finally be the cold water in the face or the slap upside the head he so desperately needs.
“It’s simple. Bets didn’t want the trip to end. I did. When we were really far from home, about four blocks away, I had had enough. I said goodbye and called a cab, which by coincidence was driven by Luis who had moved from Peru to to the south side of Pitts a few years ago and became a Lyft driver.”
I actually like anticlimax. It can be funny. Teasing about it is funny, too. It’s not really funny, though, when we’re told “we didn’t have time this summer, so buy the book.” Unless the book is a prank and contains nothing but old strips with Gunther and Bets. Which would be hilarious to all who don’t buy it, and aggravating to those who do.
On one hand, it’s nice that Bets is living her life. But I find I prefer traveling with a companion preferable to solo travel. Maybe she’ll eventually miss Gunther and return. I’m sure Gunther learned a lot about Bets other than a heat rash. Les isn’t asking the right questions. Gunther seems to have accepted Bets’ decision, but can he concentrate on school and studies? Will someone replace Bets in his life, maybe return to his life, only to have Bets return too?
We still have a couple of days left for the storyline to take a surprise turn. Or will it end like Tiffany, Luann, and Bernice alone at sunset at Tiff’s swimming pool?
All I can think about is Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie. That’s too dark for this kind of comic strip and I can hardly see Gunther doing anything like that, but the similarities are eerie.
Once a dweeb, always a dweeb. I wish they would write Gunther out of the strip. He can ruin any relationship, just take him away from his momma for more than two weeks.
I never have really like the Gunther character. The red fuzzy hair, the buck teeth, the mommy. Gunther should just go back to being a secondary character (sans Bets), since he isn’t leading man material. But now we’ll watch the girls talk about it, scheme on him, and the eventual meeting between the two of them for resolution….OR…G&K could send the whole thing down their rabbit hole (which is their habit) and that would be the smartest thing they could do this week.
I used the word resolution in a comment for Luann. Sorry, looks like I need to make a doctor appointment! LOL!
They now have different goals in life, their feeling for each other don’t seem to have been stronger then the pull of the road. It happens, could be way they are not married.
It most likely taught Gunther that Bets was a commitment-phobe—not just in personal relationships, but in the rest of her life as well. Someone not to get into any relationship with, personal or business.
I was once in a very long-term, on-and-off-and-on-and-off relationship with a woman who had many of the same characteristics as Bets, though not as severe and narcissistic. I was one of the few that didn’t propose to her—not that I didn’t want to; it was just never the right time in our lives. She accepted at least five proposals that I knew of, and never followed through with any of them. Changed colleges three times (well, one was to get lower rates when her parents relocated), quit grad school because “Texas was too da*n barren,” hopped from decent job to decent job for a variety of frustrations, finally came into an inheritance and bought an orchard, only to contract breast cancer and die a year later after “ghosting” all family and friends…….
To be fair we don’t have Bet’s side of the story. G&K said there was a story that needed to be told; so far there isn’t much of one; just a bunch of ‘i don’t know’.. In Rosa’s case we knew her game; she had aspirations of doing international aid work (like Dez) and getting into rural medicine; she had a position lined up and Gunther was along for the ride; but a 17 yr old mama’s boy just wasn’t into roughing it outdoors much less being so far from home. But this one should have been easier and Gun is older. Bets had a taste of freedom without constraints and ‘sneaking around’ and she just couldn’t let go. Gunnie should have been able to deal with it. That said, Bets has not always been the voice of reason.
Didn’t his last girlfriend choose adventure over him by staying in another country doing relief work? He seems to like a type of woman that tends to have very different life goals than he does.
Gunther may not know if they are still a couple or not. but I bet BETS knows. She is the one that has most been in control of their relationship, However a disagreement like this does not necessarily define a relationship.
Gunther has not grown an OUNCE since Peru. At least with Peru, Rosa changed her plans during the trip, prompting Gunther to leave. But this…this is just sad.
With all the speculation of what was a dream and what was real is really irrelevant if they are still 18/19 and thus starting their sophomore year. Didn’t Gunther miss his Freshman Fall Semester when he was in Peru so he is still a freshman after only completing one semester. A real surprise twist to his dream would have Gunther wake up and everyone is 21+ starting their Senior year.
Les, seems to me Gunther’s learned a lot; Bets may be too much of a free spirit for him. She did get him to step out of the box, which is not a bad thing; but for a long term/permanent personality change, probably not.
I would by G&K’s book titled: “Broken window, Piro’s life, where’s Ann Eiffel, Mr. Gray answers and all other stories not completed”. That’s a big book title.
see it was always about HER never gunther. she just wants the attention from her streamers and that streaming life and given an oppertunity to travel and stream she took it and dropped gunther. she needs to be forgotten about and move on.
You know, I feel like I missed something. They showed up at home, the van was towed there and Al paid for the tow. Suddenly the van is operational again and Bets took off in it?
Honestly? There was always something about Bets I never liked…sometimes, her unrealistic view on life, to her goofy nickname for Gunther. As far as I’m concerned, she, and Stef can be roomies, and we never see either, again.
Gunthie poo isn’t looking for a girlfriend he’s looking for a mother replacement. Once he figures that out he’ll be better off. He’ll stop looking for hot chicks and start looking for frumpy dumpy girls that will stay home and cook for him and make sure he takes care of himself.

I believe that’s called rug burn Gunther.

Which would be hilarious to all who don’t buy it, and aggravating to those who do.
anaditz about 1 year ago
I guess Bets has officially been written out of the strip, courtesy of another botched relationship. Next romantic victim, please…

Gunther left Rosa and now Bets. Gunther doesn’t like to travel.

Meh….good riddance to Bets…didn’t care too much for her.

Egad, today’s strip has generated a lot of comments. Does anyone know what any of this strips characters are majoring in?
nightflight about 1 year ago
We still have a couple of days left for the storyline to take a surprise turn. Or will it end like Tiffany, Luann, and Bernice alone at sunset at Tiff’s swimming pool?
AmissaSada about 1 year ago
All I can think about is Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie. That’s too dark for this kind of comic strip and I can hardly see Gunther doing anything like that, but the similarities are eerie.

Once a dweeb, always a dweeb. I wish they would write Gunther out of the strip. He can ruin any relationship, just take him away from his momma for more than two weeks.
comic reader 22 about 1 year ago
I never have really like the Gunther character. The red fuzzy hair, the buck teeth, the mommy. Gunther should just go back to being a secondary character (sans Bets), since he isn’t leading man material. But now we’ll watch the girls talk about it, scheme on him, and the eventual meeting between the two of them for resolution….OR…G&K could send the whole thing down their rabbit hole (which is their habit) and that would be the smartest thing they could do this week.
I used the word resolution in a comment for Luann. Sorry, looks like I need to make a doctor appointment! LOL!

Bets cannot come back into the strip without an explanation. She can’t just show up for college one day. So no more dorm drama with the 4 roomies.

They now have different goals in life, their feeling for each other don’t seem to have been stronger then the pull of the road. It happens, could be way they are not married.

still two days left this week … maybe Gunther will get a text from Bets?

Bets cares more about her social media stuff than she does about Gunther. Time to cut her loose for good.
LNER4472 Premium Member about 1 year ago
Absolutely wrong, in all probability.

Saturday’s strip will have the wrecker truck bringing Bets back home in a totalled van; and she’ll hand Al the $900.00 repair bill.
Gen.Flashman about 1 year ago
With all the speculation of what was a dream and what was real is really irrelevant if they are still 18/19 and thus starting their sophomore year. Didn’t Gunther miss his Freshman Fall Semester when he was in Peru so he is still a freshman after only completing one semester. A real surprise twist to his dream would have Gunther wake up and everyone is 21+ starting their Senior year.

It occurs to me that Bets wouldn’t travel anywhere w/o WiFi available for her vlogging. No idea what she’s telling her fans about where Guns is.

Well I suppose that’s something.

Honestly? There was always something about Bets I never liked…sometimes, her unrealistic view on life, to her goofy nickname for Gunther. As far as I’m concerned, she, and Stef can be roomies, and we never see either, again.
Sisyphos about 1 year ago
I hope everyone is satisfied.
Gunny is back to being his hapless, witless self (or faking it really well).
Greg and Karen are hoping to make a fistful of dollars off fans who feel a desperate need to know details of the Great Road Run by Gunther and Bets.
And we, mere readers of a comic strip about non-maturing teens, get along as best we may….

I figgered it out. Bets talked Gun into going to Vegas, where Bets showed how she got her name and lost the van in a poker game.

I’m thinking Gun will pick up with Rosa and eventually Bets will be back to try to get him back.

Gunthie poo isn’t looking for a girlfriend he’s looking for a mother replacement. Once he figures that out he’ll be better off. He’ll stop looking for hot chicks and start looking for frumpy dumpy girls that will stay home and cook for him and make sure he takes care of himself.
